mr. zimmerman, best of luck to you. going to take a five-minute recess everybody. >> that was george zimmerman's first appearance before a florida court on new charges of domestic violence against his girlfriend. a lot of information coming out of that hearing specifically from the judge on what george zimmerman must abide by in order to be out on bond. the judge says he's not allowed to have possession of a firemen or any ammunition, must stay 1500 feet away from addresses. we presume that's where his girlfriend lives. no travel outside of the state of florida. i'm about to talk to kerry sanders here. perhaps the most interesting, kerry, new revelations from the state attorney right there that last week the state attorney claims george zimmerman's girlfriend did not report a choking incident and that his girlfriend fears for his life, telling the state he's suicidal with nothing to lose. something we did not know before. >> we did not know that. the actual word used was threat of strangulation. certainly new development

mr. zimmerman. we're having first appearance everybody arrested in the state of florida is entitled to see a judge the day following their arrest. the initial purpose of this hearing is to determine whether there is probably cause for the arrest itself. that means whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that a crime may have been committed and that you may have been the person who committed the crime. there are certain things that we have to accomplish today. the first is to make sure you understand the reason or reasons for your arrest. the second is to make sure you receive a copy of the charging document. in your case, it will abarrest report so you and anor your attorneys can prepare for a trial of your case. the third is to make sure you clearly understand all of the rights that you are guaranteed as a citizen of this united states. first of all, you have the absolute right to have your case tried by a jury of your peers. six individuals will be chosen to decide whether you're guilty or

mr. zimmerman, who for lack of a better word, has gone crazy on me. mr. dispatcher that he had never pulled a gun on his girl friend, that it was she who smashed the table, and that though she was carrying his child, she decided she would raise their baby on her own. but in a news conference, the seminole county sheriff's deputy said this. >> at this time, the victim has disclosed to us that she is not pregnant. >> hmmm. who knows why mr. zimmerman would suggest that his girlfriend was pregnant when, in fact, she wasn't. and who knows why mr. zimmerman would choose to make a 911 call after his girlfriend had already done so, and after the police had actually arrived on the scene. of course, mr. zimmerman will have the opportunity to answer these questions in court. but his girlfriend had an interesting take on his actions as she communicated them to the 911 dispatcher. and here it is. >> he pushed me out of my house and locked me out. >> okay. you're outside now? >> yeah, he locked me out of my house. okay. what's your -- i've got units on the way. is ther

mr. zimmerman was -- that mr. martin was on top of mr. zimmerman and inflicting punishment, that would be a different view. if you believe he was just walking to the candy and a soda, which he obviously was, you wonder how can somebody be dead because of that. this is so complicated. the one thing i don't want us to do as politicians is to take away the ability of when it is your day in court to avail yourself of a lawful defense that has been recognized. the question for me is -- have we gone too far? >> senator, thank you for allowing me because that is exactly what i was feeling and wanted to present. there has been a large discussion of justice harlan, beard versus the united states. that is clearly an off justice -- an objective standard. if you look in you say in a way and with such force as an under all circumstances, he at the moment honestly believed and had reasonable grounds to believe were necessary to save his own life and protect himself from great bodily injury. that is exactly the problem, and that is why there have been so

mr. attorney general, why haven't charges been filed against george zimmerman yet? >> the case of george zimmerman and what happened there -- i think a substantial part was resolved in the case that was tried. the inquiry reviewed and we are still doing an investigation. i'm not sure how much longer that will take but and we get to a point where we are able to make a determination, we try to construct the case and i way that we can share as much information, not just make an announcement but share the information with regard to that determination. >> one more? >> ok, one more. [laughter] >> there is a senate hearing on prison reform. what would you like to see congress pass to change the way the present system is? >> i talked about this in san francisco in august. i thought the system was broken. i did not mean to imply that i was only talking about the federal system. we have problems that go further. i think we need to come up with ways in which we hold people accountable. we also need to come up with ways in which we prevent people from coming in -- becoming invo

mr. parks, stand your ground was not used as a defense in the george zimmerman trial, but jurors have since was discussed as part of their deliberation. if this law had not been on the books, do you feel that the incident in which trayvon martin lost his life would have been different? >> i certainly think it would have been different for many reasons. martin, stand your ground law was actually throughout the trayvon martin case. as you may know, when the case first started as george zimmerman was going through the process, he continued to say that there's a strong potential we may put forth a stand your ground defense. ultimately they decided not to, but you saw them putting it in there. however, even at the very beginning, when the police chief refused to investigate and arrest george zimmerman, that was part of the stand your ground. and then lastly in the jury instructions, we saw that george zimmerman had the right to stand your ground. the jurors made it very clear that they were confused about this law, and that's the main problem with the law. the law is very confusing to people and

zimmerman and virginia sherwood. >> i'd like to start first of all, and i can direct this at both of you, but i think mainly it will probably be for you, mrs. schlafly. that is the quotation we started the law with, equality of the rights under the law will not be denied or abridged by the united states or by any state on account of sex. now, you are with stop e.r.a. why are you against this? >> well, the language of the amendment i think shows why we didn't find out what was the matter with it until we got well into this constitutional debate. most people thought it meant equal pay for equal work, but that's now already guaranteed by the equal employment opportunity act of 1972. but we have found that the equal rights amendment will take away from women some of the most important rights that they now possess. for example, the laws of every one of our 50 states requires the husband to financially support his wife and children. now, under the equal rights amendment, all these laws will be invalidated because no longer can you have any ledgetion which imposes an obligation on one sex that it does not impose on another. you don't have to take
