mrs. carter, there are several first ladies still living.are is there a sorority of first ladies in a sense. well, i had a good relationship with betty ford and with lady bird. as long as she was alive. but that's about it. i don't think there's never been a real we see each other at the event and at the library dedication. so in the new what new first ladies. but there's never been that, uh, closeness that, that i had with betty ford and lady bird when you were first lady, you had a weekly luncheon with your husband and would attend cabinet meetings. what was the purpose of that? ll, i had a luncheon with jimmy. there were always things i wanted to ask and some of it was about the family and the finances and things that going on back home. um, but also talked about issues. it was, i would say it was more family and personal things that were going on. um, but it gave us time to do that. but almost every after we were there until about august, um, jimmy stayed at the, um, oval office a good bit in the daytime. he didn't go, didn't go back muc

since you got to know president carter and mrs. carter and all their work, could a 1976 jimmy carter win election to the presidency in 2024 politics? >> i don't think he would have a chance. partly american politics has changed, but also carter, what's interesting about carter, there's only one carter. there's not a new card or new new carter like we heard about nixon, times have changed but carter has not changed. i believe given the current status of the democratic party i think carter would have a very hard time. probably he would be perceived as too liberal. i doubt that he could. i wish he could. i wish he were able enough. >> question here. for the mike. >> such a good question i don't how to follow that but steve was asking you earlier, over time as you were researching them what changes you see in the carters? my question it is a credit to your process, maybe longer what changes do you see in your self as a historian, author, and person? >> both of those are good questions. it's a big block of time. i got married and had kids. you

mrs. carter mental health is just not a sexy issue. well that made me mad. i was really made me mad. so it's frustrated sometimes because they would cover the things that i didn't think was important. and they didn't cover in i didn't want mental health cover, but because it was my project. but the stigma is so bad. and that if people are in the country know that it's an acceptable thing to work on, you know, it could help people out in the country. so i really wanted it to be covered. so they were frustrating tense, but i had things that i wanted to do when i came to the white house you in 1977. the first lady was still traditionally covered by reporters writing for the women's pages and most of the attention was focused on social matters. as kathy said yesterday on the panel, the press was more interested in what i was going to wear then in the projects i intended to take on. they were that point so interested in my inaugural gown, and they wanted to know why i was only serving wine at state de

mr. show the turning point in carter's life was really 1953 when mr. earl died. he comes back, leaves the navy, comes back, discovers all these things about. his father, he didn't know sharks in his early years. and then he moves forward from zaire and. it's an extremely important story that shows that is one of the main themes of my book, because don't think i don't take others have done and i'll have tell you one story related about it. earl carter was a highly successful business man. he and he was fairly he fairly well-to-do. but he a tough period his who i believe had been murdered so he he had grown up fatherless and he had a very hands attitude toward rearing his own children, especially older son jimmy, whom he nicknamed hot shot, mr. required hard work. he required perfection. and if you delivered it, you just did what you're supposed to do. you weren't get any reward for it. you just did what you're supposed to do. and and carter grew up that way because when carter becomes grown he does that too he requires hard work. he requires perfection that's why
