[laugh] so we knew that we were being relied on by brian. a few weeks back, mrs. lee called brian early in the morning to tell him not to bother picking them up because they were already at the hospital. mr. lee was ill and she had taken him to the er. the next day or so, brian, on his lunchtime, found out that mr. lee had been admitted to the hospital and he went up to mr. lee's room and just stuck his head in just to say hello. and the minute

mr. mayor. mayor lee: thank you very much for being here today. i know that we have all been extremely busy. a lot of policy, project, program issues are before the board. i want to thank you for working as diligently as you are with our office in making sure the public interest is best served. with that, i would like to jump right into questions. supervisor chiu: supervisor mar? supervisor mar: thank you. statewide budget cuts have been catastrophic. and i thank you for your support for schools and the meeting with the community college system, recently. we face up to $83.8 million in cuts over the next three years. it could be even worse if state revenue measures do not pass. upcoming summer school offerings are nearly nonexistent. 210 layoff notices were sent to the teachers. it truly is a crisis for families of school-age children living in san francisco. what steps are you taking in your office to help to fund san francisco public schools? >> thank you for that question. we are providing it will clap -- world-class education for the youth of

mr. lee: thank you very much. on monday we heard from democrats who insist that congress must now raise taxes of the american people. in fact, they're so committed to this task that they're willing to take the country off the fiscal cliff in order to get their way. this is unfortunate. it's unnecessary and it's a course of action that we cannot pursue. mind you, they're not trying to pursue comprehensive tax reform. no, they're not trying to fix this byzantine era of tax code which occupies tens of thousands of pages. what they're doing instead is just to raise taxes right now so that they can get their way right now, so that they can cover their shortfall that exists right now because of a chronic failure by congress over time to set and stick to spending priorities. well, the vast majority of republicans are committed not to raise taxes, not on anyone, and there are some very good reasons for this. first, the federal government has proven its inadequacy in this area. congress has proven tim

mr. lee: every year several members -- ms. lee: every year several members take part in the food stamp challenge. eat for one week on average food stamp benefits which is $1.50 per meal. every member should join us in the food stamp challenge this year. especially members who want to cut food stamps. you need to know what it means to be hungry. we simply cannot cut $16 billion in critical snap benefits. food stamps not only feed hungry children, seniors and veterans, but also promote real growth and creates jobs. it makes no economic sense and no moral sense to cut $16 billion from the food stamp program. we should reject these heartless cuts on the poor and get back to creating the jobs and opportunities for everyone. people would rather have a job instead of food stamps to feed their family. but until republicans support efforts to create jobs, we have a moral responsibility and a duty to make sure that at least people eat. it's hard to believe in 2012 we are debating feeding people. the speaker pro tempore: the gentlelady's
