lincoln theatre. joining us to talk about this debut and other events on the theatre calendar is lionel thomas, the executive director of the d.c. commission on the arts and humanities. mryou for joining us again. how did you decide on this movie which everyone says is great to be the opening act for the rejuvenated lincoln theatre? >> well, it was a partnership arrangement with the landmark theatre and we're very excited that it was arranged to come to the lincoln theatre. as a part of our kickoff effort to improve the identity and create a new identity for the lincoln theatre. it is directed by award winning director david fincher starring daniel craig and rooney mara. >> what is the identity of lincoln theatre. we know it was a theatre. but there was a ballroom and we knew it was a stage for some of the greatest live entertainers of the time. does what are you saying about the identity of the theatre if you start off with the movie? is that what it is going to be from now on, a movie theatre? >> no, it is going to be a movie theatre. i grew up as a native washingtonian, i remember it as a movie house. i used to come here every sunday and on the weekends to see movies

mr. gingrich was caught transferring money for a scholarship program he set up for inner city students known as the abraham lincoln opportunity fund. gingrich was caught transferring money from that fund to his own political action committee. newt gingrich was getting people to donate money under that guise and taking that money for his biography. now that he's running for president, going after poor people, specifically going after poor kids has become a centerpiece of his campaign. >> in very poor neighborhoods you have to literally reestablish the dignity of work. i will tell you, personally, i believe the kids could mop the floor and clean out the bathroom and get paid for it and it would be okay. they'd be dramatically less expensive than unionized janitors. and you'd begin to reestablish the dignity of work. >> and they're delicious. make poor kids work as janitors. mr. gingrich now trying to appear more compassionate about this by making clear while it would be okay for poor kids to be put to work cleaning toilets, he does not want them working in coal mines. that would be cruel. there's that. mr. gingrich

mr. thomas, in an economy like this, people often cut back on entertainment. is there a way that you can keep some of the entertainment at the lincoln theatre low cost so more people can keep more revenue coming in? >> that's one of our top priorities is making sure the programming is affordable to all residents. we're going to have something for everyone. we're going to have educational programs for young people. we're going to have programs that address the diverse elements of our city. we are really going to make a real, concerted effort to keep the tickets at an affordable price so everyone can enjoy this rich jewel on u street. >> mr. thomas, you also want to make it a place that's welcoming and attractive to attend and that means restoration. that means funds. how are you going to go about getting those restoration funds and what will be the first priority in that venture? >> well, the city has devoted some capital funds to improve the -- and make some needed renovations to the theatre. there are some electrical issues that need to be addressed and then there are some other things that we need to do to make it more welcoming f
