mr. petraeus' personal life, the agency had to address questionable conduct by one of its own, includingly sending shirtless photos of himself to a woman involved in the case. that woman is jill kelly, a family friend of petraeus, who first brought to the fbi's attention troubling e-mails she was receiving from an anonymous e-mail account operated by paula broadwell. we heard from the ghost writer of broadwell's biography of petraeus. he says my wife says i'm the most clueless person in america. lobe says he never knew of the affair, despite working with broadwell for 16 months. i assumed given how public their relationship was he would never engage in risky behavior. he always preached to proteges, is character is what did you when no one was watching and he would hasten to add from his most public of perches that someone is always watching. there was no protege more ardent than broadwell. senator dianne feinstein is growing ever more concerned as the story develops. >> generally, what we call the four corners, the chair and rankings of both committees are briefed on operationally sensi

mr. petraeus, that he is guilty of misconduct based on the allegations that are under investigation right now. >> what started as an extramarital affair involving petraeus has evolved into a drama of intrigue and access with many wondering what's next. >> reporter: was it really just friday when we found out about the affair between the very much married now former c.i.a. director david petraeus and this woman, the also very much married biographer paula broadwell. you may know the affair came to light after this woman, 37-year- old married tampa mom jill kelley complained to a friend, an f.b.i. agent. that would be this person here that she was receiving threatening e-mails reportedly from broadwell launching an investigation. and that blue the lid on this -- blew the lid on this. general john allen, the top commander in afghanistan, the man who took petraeus's place is now being investigated. seems when the f.b.i. was looking into those e-mails, they also found 20,000 to 30,000 pages back and forth between jill kelley and allen. some say they're potentially inappropriate, maybe crossing

mrs. petraeus, holly petraeus, she's really come in to her own in recent years.ion issues for military families. i've talked to her about that. she knows her stuff. i can tell you one time i was at an event where both he and she were there and he basically said, talk to my wife. she knows her business. he really was so proud -- is so proud of what she has accomplished. they met each other, you know, back at west point. her father was superintendent of the academy when he was a cadet at west point. so essentially you could think of it as he married the boss's daughter and this woman spent 37 years as a military wife essentially. many, many years in which her husband, the father of her children was not home, was in iraq, afghanistan, other war zones. she more than anybody knows what young military wives are going through these days with long separations, trying to raise the kids, trying to keep the families together while their husbands are off doing other things. so this will be looked at through many prisms, but it will be looked at through that military prism. i

mrs. petraeus in all of this, probably something that is well worth remembering there are two spouses here. >> yeah. >> who clearly are in a great deal of personal pain. >> and barbara, there are children. i saw a photograph of their home, the broadwell's home. they had departed and there was chalk on the driveway and in that chalk it was written, dad loves mom. there are kids involved here so this is clearly, as "spider" marks said, pain is going around. i know you have a lot to do so i'll let you go. >> sure. >>> there are complaints from congress that members of the intelligence committees put the house and the senate were kept in the dark about all of this. senate intelligence committee woman dianne feinstein said this. >> we received no advance notice. it was like a lightning bolt. >> and are you going to investigate why the fbi didn't notify you before? >> yes. absolutely. i mean, this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it and that is just to inform the chair and the vice chairman of both committees.

mr. petraeus should not testify before that -- the house intelligence committee. it's a closed briefing. he has intimate personal firsthand knowledge that has not excluded people from testifying previously. he was the person in charge. the annex was attacked. he has been in that position for a year. he should know and understand what was happening in libya. absolutely, general petraeus should testify next week. >> congressman, we learned today that secretary of state clinton has said she will be unavailable next week, when she has been called to testify. do you anticipate that the committee will try to come up with arrangements to to have a new date so the secretary of state will be able to clear her schedule and testify and let folks know what she knew and when? >> there is only so long this administration is going to be able to hide and duck and cover the hard questions. look, ambassador rice, secretary clinton, there is a host of people that need to come before congress and testify about what they knew and when they knew it. i sent my first letter to secretary
