mrs. ford, i understand. [laughter] and when she said, with four kids you can forget about order, you just have to hope you don't crack your ankle stumbling over ree bags of marbles, and a tinker toy. i thought, mrs. ford, i understand. so that is a summary of why i feel kinship with betty ford. i am here to talk to you about my book. it's called first ladies and american women in politics and at home. i will tell you about how i got the idea. i actually went to the university of virginia for graduate school. as mr. jefferson's university, uva is a great place to study the presidents. but when i got there, i kind of looked around and wandered why, not quite as many people were so interested in studying the first ladies. the thing about first ladies if you are a student of government as i am, is that they don't have a constitutional role. sense in some circles, not everyone thinks this, but there is kind of a sense that the first lady is less than a government official. i started writing these journal articles about first ladies and sending them to political science publications. some were warmly received. but i will be honest, i got some rejection
