romney knows how this game is played, mr. and mrs. romney that is.st interview on a -- since the election i think i would have focused on something positive, whatever it was i wanted to say about my future plans and so on on not let chris wallace walk them into this detour of talking about the media. wallace is asking the questions as he saw them but they didn't have to answer them. i would have really tried to say something, look, i've got another 20 years of active life ahead of me and i want to do something major witness and here is what you'll learn about me. i think that would have been a better second act after the election. >> i think jim is right. it's always easy to blame the media. ann romney made an interesting point. whatever candidate is talking is going to think that that candidate didn't get the kind of coverage they wished they had had on either side of the plate. i'm sure the obama campaign tphaoels there are many times the media are wasn't fair to him and his message didn't get out there. >> that's why we have metrics to show where

mr. romney. so is the republican candidate's window in the spotlight officially shut? me start with you. was this a good-bye, por was this a dt you're still with us. we like you. we lost a close one. he doesn't fit well with any of the clashing tv parties. and he proved he was incompetent candidate ultimately. i'm not sure they want him back. i think they like his money. and i think there is probably some affection for him, just as there was for losers like john kerry and al gore after they lost elections. john kerry would get cheered when we would show up among democrats after losing in 2004. more so than before. >> where are these cheers for al gore? >> when he finally showed up to come out gns the iraq war, he was -- he was very much cheered. what do think? >> well, it was his swan song. there's no question about that. but he did do interesting things. he alluded to single moms who work two jobs. these are people he ignored during the presidential run up. maybe he is moving more moderate. trump is absurd. let me try something by you both. i don't know your politics.

mr. romney won 59% of the white vote and he did not carry any of those states. i commend the republicans for going through this exercise. it is painful. it opens them up to scrutiny, to cheap shots, but they are doing something that most parties loss -- most parties gloss over. most parties blame the defeat on their own candidate. john mccain was the grumpy old man candidate -- that is why he lost. al gore was a stiff. that is why the democrats lost. it is an easy explanation. they are confronting something very real. they deserve great credit. it is difficult and painful. most technological advances do not come out of the party apparatus. they come out as howard dean had social networking, and barack obama took that to different levels in 2012. >> rand paul had a speech on immigration that even marco rubio praised. >> rand paul is, to me, representing what republicans ought to be doing, and not what priebus is talking about. paul called the harvard university business school and asked for an opportunity to talk to the students about the future of the republican

romney. i was more interested as a voter. >> mr. prouty worked at a previous political fund-raiser where bill clinton was the speaker. because bill clinton at that fund-raiser came back after the fund-raiser and met the staff and talked to people and shook hands and took pictures of people, he had his camera on hand in kasz it happened with mitt romney. that did not happen with mitt romney. having the camera there resulted that a different outcome. a fascinating thing we learned is it was not actually the 47% remarks that motivated him to go public with the recording. it was something mr. romney said earlier before he got to the 47% thing. >> when i was back in my private equity days we went to china to buy a factory that employed 20,000 people, women between the ages of 18 and 22 or 23. >> it was that anecdote, that casual reference to buying a factory in china that scott prouty said made him sit up and take notice. this recording that he was making just for himself, for a souvenir of the evening might end up being a politically im

mr. wallace joins us now from washington. if governor romney had won the presidency, we wouldn't be going through this because the governor would have cut the federal budget, there is no doubt about it. does mr. romney understand, chris, that many of his supporters feel very let down by him? >> oh, absolutely. you know, this is the first interview he has done since election day. and obviously it's four months that of the public spot. one of the questions i asked him in the interview is why would the republican party want to hear from you and he said look, i know, i lost. i lost a race that a lot of people thought we should have won and they blame me. but i care too much about it. you know, i care about these issues. and i'm going to offer what i think and people can take from it what they want to take. is he keenly aware, first of all, is he disappointed and secondly and he says repeatedly in this interview he knows he let a lot of people down. and when you see something like this, which he believes he could have prevented from happening, yeah,

mr. romney. these kids need a helping hand. but republicans are turning their backs on them. joining me now is e.j. dionne and maria teresa couple kumar. thank you for being on the show tonight. we're talking about kids getting kicked out of education but all the gop can see is cuts, cuts, cuts. why is this? >> i think it's an ideological commitment and the belief that the only thing that matters is cutting tax rates. i think it's really so striking that, you know, two facts about the ryan budget. on the one hand, he wants to cut the tax rate on the very wealthy on people earning over $450,000 a year down to 25%. he said he'll pay for that somehow but it will have to be by getting rid of middle-class tax deductions. at the same time they point out that that budget will take health insurance away from 40 to 50 million americans between the cuts in obama care and the cuts in medicaid. and that is just not the way forward for the country. and on the sequester, you've had an utterly inconsistent talking points. on the one hand, sometimes they say this is devastating but mostly th

mr. romney, at that point wants you to put out the full tape. what is your response to that? >> let's do it. i was on the phone with david at the time. i asked him to blur out everyone else in the room. i only wanted romney to be seen. i really only wanted romney's voice to be heard, too. in a way, i felt it wasn't fair to the people in the room. i only wanted his voice, but he came out and did this press conference. frankly, my reaction, it looks like he's a broken man. that was my impression. his hair was a mess. his face contorted. he's as stressed as you can be. he doubled down on it. he said it's a message i'm going to continue to take forward. he didn't back up from it at all. then he did. he specifically asked that i release the whole thing, called it a snippet insinuating it was taken out of context. so, at that point, if he asked for it, i decided i would give it to him and said david, go for it. >> it was a motivator for you? >> yeah. >> you are going to the firewall. >> he asked for it. >> now that the tape is out, the pressure is on candidate romney because he was

mr. romney's interview, you point out he's not the leader of the party and could have good things to say at cpac with many conservatives there waiting i guess for some kind of direction, some type of leadership. he is on the roster for a reason and still can't quite explain that 47% comment and i do not believe that that will exclusively haunt governor romney. i believe it's haunting for the party for many people not to at least explain or justify what he was thinking. >> well, specifically, with minority outreach, i agree with danny, but i think that immigration reform specifically, legislative approach is part of it but as republicans we need to show up more, go to more local eve events. i don't know what he's talking about at the cpac conference. could be a postmortem to the campaign but things to learn from it. >> you learn nothing with a postmortem and didn't give you major headlines other than "the washington post" which said ann romney needs to move on but with that said, jonathan, if you had a choice of chris christie or mitt romney to the big conference, your conservative cross
