ms. jackson lee: mr. speaker, yesterday i heard the story of a mother who had lost her son, who had a pre-existing condition. and was not able to get insurance. only when a benevolent hospital took him in and determined at the time that he had stage three cancer, because he had no insurance, because he had needed a colonoscopy. if he had had obamacare, he would have had the ability at least to get insurance without worrying about the pre-existing condition. emotions are high, but for the right reason. there is no reason to eliminate obamacare as being discussed on this floor, tied to opening the government back up. all the republicans have to do is to pass with the democrats a clean c.r. so that people might live. their story is like taking away the civil rights laws that president johnson helped pass, because they did not like it, they would hold up the government and close the government. for me, this is a civil rights for all americans. to have the right to live. to have the right to have health insura

ms. jackson lee. i've got to give you an example of what is taking place here. soon after obamacare passed, $321 a month health care premium which included medicare and prescription drugs went to $528 a month. the next year it went to $727 a month and i just been notified starting in january i would be paying somewhere in the range of $12,000 a year for my health care. i'm 70-years-old, single, excellent health why are the premiums so high? >> guest: the affordable care act does nothing to hinder medicare or the supplementals we have to buy from medicare. so i can't tell you only have to admit before the affordable care act, the supplementals are not regulated by the federal government. the policies you get certain different levels. now other states have their own regulations, but your increase in the supplementals has nothing to do with the affordable care act. we are over 65. we have to sign up for medicare even if we are in congress. >> we believe this morning's portion of the washington journal to go live to the national interest posting a panel discussion o

ms. jackson lee: over the past 16 days, many of us have risen to this floor and pleaded with our friends on the other side of the aisle and asked for mercy. not mercy for our individual selves as members of congress but mercy for the american people. 800,000 over the past 16 days who have lost their jobs in furloughs, $300 million a day that this nation has lost. this is the very answer to those who are suggesting that we're spending too much money, mr. speaker, we've lost money. but today i come, humbly, to plead with my friends to do as the chaplain mentioned this morning, have a generosity of spirit and recognize that we can come together. let the voices of commonsense recognize that states like mississippi, louisiana, arizona, south dakota, missouri, texas, new mexico, montana, georgia, new york, texas, and wyoming, states that represent so many, are losing so much because they get the most money from this nation. and then let us recognize juanita davis with litting tanita, 10 days old who is fearful her w.i.c. money, women, infant, and children money in the state of texas is running

ms. jackson lee: i am very pleased to have heard some of the testimony of secretary sebelius and to understand that we should be in this business, all of us, in serving the american peculiar, to fix problems and make in essence, things work. put the wheels on. so we are going to ensure that this website is fixed by the end of november, the beginning of december. same kind of problems that happened with medicare part d. but in actuality, rather than using anecdotal stories, let me tell you the president was in fact right that you can grandfather and keep your same insurance. but if your same medical insurance was similar to a subprime mortgage loan that had no value whatsoever, as most americans know, and you are getting an improved medical coverage insurance, then you get new insurance. and as in california and other places, that states have their own insurance exchange, we've seen a 29% decrease in insurance premiums. but the real issue is what we're doing in sequester and budgeting and the loss of the researchers at the n.i.h. it's a disgrace. we need to get to work on serious issues to put

ms. jackson lee. i want to give you an example of what is taking place here. ed, myfter obamacare pass $321 per month health care premium, which included medicare, supplemental, and prescription drug, went to $528 a month. went to $727 ait month, and i have just notified that, starting in january, i will be paying somewhere in the range of $12,000 per year for my health care. i am 70 years old, single, excellent health. why are my premiums so high? , i am alsot of all over 65, and the affordable care act does nothing to indicate -- to hinder medicare or supplementals you have to buy for medicare. i have to admit before the affordable care act, the supplementals, they are not regulated by the federal government. the policies, you have certain different levels, but those are related by the state of texas. other states have their own regulation. in yourrease supplementals has nothing to do with the affordable care act. oppose the affordable care act, but you and i are not affected by it. we have to sign up for medicare, even if you are in congress. -- your premiu

ms. jackson lee: let me thank the gentleman from texas for his service and for his commitment to an issue that is so vital and important to the nation and that is protection of all americans from domestic violence. and there is a long history to the journey of this congress, to responding to the women and men, both in the civilian life and in the united states military. i rise today to respond and respect that we are acknowledging, commemorating domestic violence prevention month. i remember the journey that we took in getting the violence ainst women act, the prevention of that, with chairman hyde. and remember in the early stages of the 1990's the then attempt to re-authorize this legislation . the good news was that chairman hyde, a republican and ranking member conyers at that time, and senators on both sides of the aisle joined together in one big room to come together and acknowledge the importance of protecting women and then of course to acknowledge that violence, domestic violence is a disease, an epidemic that spreads beyond the question of whether you are male or female. and so

ms. jackson lee: in about two hours today, in houston, at the lakewood church, we in houston will honor the famed, the humble, and the especially "bum" phillips.
