msnbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel has our report. >> reporter: in the town of zswiyah today, 40 miles east of tripoli, at least 10 people were reportedly killed in fighting. but some of the worst violence has been here in benghati where hospitals are filled with wounded. >> i tend many, more than 300, more than 300 and injured more than 3,000. >> reporter: doctors say the victims were shot with bullets and anti-aircraft rounds. many were executed at close range. but colonel moammar gadhafi downplayed the violence and offered a radically different explanation in a bizarre and revealing radio address. we were in a car as we spoke. his words were slurred. he mumbled with long pauses. i've listened to speeches in arabic of middle east leaders for 15 years. this did not sound like a sane person. in the address, gadhafi claimed al qaeda is behind the revolt. osama bin laden is slipping libyans hallucinogenic pills in coffee with milk and that the pills are distributed in mosques with help from the united states. a u.s. official described gadhafi as, quote, nuts. rebel leader

his msnbc special on bill clinton's post presidency airs monday night. we're all looking forward to that. welcome to today. and with us "the washington post"'s howard fineman, kelly o'donnell, constitution cynthia tucker and politico's jon harris. first up, america broke? the urgency of our debt crisis is long talked about but now is really hitting home. on the state level we seen the face-off between governors and public employees. most dramatically out in wisconsin. on the federal level, there's a growing sense of the fury that brought in the tea party might lead to a bipartisan deal on entitlements. here's a graphic that shows the urgency. lovente edge you see the current year, social security, medicare and medicaid are still below total federal revenue. but look at what happens every year from now on. every cent of annual federal revenue will be engulped by entitlements by the year 2050. is the time right to find a fix? one of the biggest voices on the republican side is their new house budget chair, paul ryan, who said this to politico's mike allen

supporters once again took up the protest at their positions at the capitol, wisconsin's governor said on msnbc he is not a union buster, he's a budget balancer. our own mike taibbi is in madison, wisconsin, for us. >> reporter: once again today the capitol rotunda was packed with pro-union protesters. some from out of state but most apparently from wisconsin, trying to force governor scott walker to compromise. several times today he said he won't. >> to get wisconsin working again, we've got to have a budget that's balanced. >> reporter: walker is telling the unions they'll have to pay more toward their pensions and health plans, about 8% of their take-home pay on average, and must surrender their collective bargaining power in all areas except wages in order to close the $3.6 billion budget gap. employee unions say they'll consider everything except the loss of bargaining power. >> collective bargaining is the bedrock of what a union is all about. >> reporter: on saturday, 70,000 protesters jammed the capitol. some anti-union demonstrators too, and the state's 14 democratic senators have lef

i think tamara hall is on msnbc. after then you look at all of the programs that come on in primetime, and there is not a person of color doing one of them. i talk about cnn all the time. they could go out and hire a disgraced public official like elliott spitzer to do a primetime show on their network. and yet cannot find a person of color? that may not be disgraced and is excellent at what they do? i just think nobody is talking about it. nobody cares. and that's why we've seen things erode. i think the progress has eroded. >> do you agree with her? >> i agree with her to a certain extent. on the one hand you do see more women have much more visibility in the media and more minorities. but she is correct. there is no major cable network backing a minority news anchor. and you don't see a lot of minorities after 2:00 p.m. and a lot of the women are very, very young on the air when you get to women who are seasoned veterans 40s and 50s in journalism, it's far few inbetween. you have katie couric and diane sawyer but

he had up to a million viewers per night in his prime time slot on msnbc. nbc universal owns 10% of current media -- "current" media. caller: it is a shame they have not renewed it yet. but one mistake they did make was that the -- an agent was listening to a conversation or downloading illegally off of the web, and it was embarrassing to you, they would keep this information and replay it and laugh about it. these people should have had incredible repercussions for doing something like that. as far as the patriot act, it should definitely be extended. i do not see what liberties you are losing someone listening to a conversation of yours for a couple of seconds and you are doing something completely legal. you have no repercussions for that. yet, if somebody is trafficking humans or planning an attack that could kill thousands of people, it will prevented -- prevent it. joining us from political process offices in washington area is john harris, editor in chief. to talk about the front pages this morning. let me show our viewers this headline. insurance re
