you have a couple of people on msnbc. this show, which i wouldn't call liberal. these are journalists who are telling the truth and they are branded and marginalized for telling the truth and same with pbs. pbs was not a left-wing ideology. air america was, but pbs was not. anybody hotels the truth is branded and marginalized. the devolution of the american press back in 1986 when ronald reagan abandoned the fairness doctrine. we had a law that was passed in 1928 that said the air waves belong to the public. and they are licensed only if they inform the public and advance democracy. that's why we have a 6:00 news. they didn't want it. the broadcasters didn't want that because the news departments were chronic money losers but were forced to put on the news at 6:00. and you hear news on the music radio stations and that is part of the fairness doctrine. they said if you are using the broadcast air waves, you have to do that. you have to avoid corporate consolidation and that was the other rule. you had to have diversity of control from all over. and that provision

people on my side may go to msnbc. the truth is a lot of them do go to cnn but people go to different places and get an affirmation of their point of view. what we don't get is a sense of what the other guys are saying and a sense of balance, a sense of who is really right, or at least what the facts are. there is less of an emphasis on that, and that is unhealthy. the president made a speech at the university of michigan last year, a graduation speech in which he urged the young people, don't just watch msnbc, watch fox. don't just read "the wall street journal". read "the new york times." get a variety of opinions, so the flip side of the targeting benefit of cable is that people self-select and they don't get other points of view. >> so what helps you in paid advertising you think works against you on some stations in news, free news, free media? >> there is a constant narrative that you have to play into and you have to be conscious of and you have to try to manage and every news cycle is like four hours. >> or ten

msn and msnbc sprang from microsoft. rupert murdoch, for all the criticism he gets, is invested in the media and innovation. mike bloomberg is doing a ton of stuff through his company. they are hiring hundreds of people. i worked at bloomberg 15 years ago, and i was in europe as a foreign correspondent. there were 40 journalists, and now, there are thousands. i think it depends on the interests of certain people, but they are being tapped, and you can get them to lend to foundations and do this type of stuff. it is just creating the bridge from the journalism world into that world, and it is not as hard as you would think, in my experience. >> i would just say that a few of those individuals you had mentioned are not examples of the types of progress of journalism that i think a lot of people are here to talk about and listened of route -- was it about. these guys are kind of villains in a sense of where we want journalism to go. fox news and the daily, who knows where that is going to go, but they are not necessarily pu

the msnbc interview i have seen all u.s. army interrogators. they were not interrogating high-value targets like ksm that was part of the cia program. now other targets are in the custody of the u.s. navy. the army interrogators look at low level taliban figures or iraq. but your view is splintered along agency lines. the fbi and law-enforcement thinks of making a case. lawyers have written them so say complex set of rules and they are very cautious of the rules that have rules of evidence were chains of custody and these are the things that upset the fbi. if you prosecute using the civilian court, they are right. interrogations' must be conducted in such a way as to avoid tampering or spoiling the evidence during the case. there are some military am predominately army people who feel the field interrogations' should be the model. and this is senator john mccain few as we follow the 1940 army manual that is great except the and the field manual has a certain limitation. you can never shot at a detainee or make false threats. you cannot play goo
