with me from baltimore is msnbc's tremaine lee.he case of freddie gray who sustained fatal injuries. baltimore police handed over the results of their investigation to the states attorney who was just sworn in in january. it will be up to her office to decide whether to pursue charges. police also revealed that the police van carrying gray made a previously undisclosed stop on its way to the station,

let me go now to msnbc's tremaine lee. tremaine describe the scene where you are. >> how you doing, rev. i'm here soointt. paul street. people are holding signs, black lives matter. no justice, no peace, no racist police. now one thing that is different about this crowd, there are two things. one, the sheer diversity of the crowd here. it was billed as a march for high school students college students to gather. and it's reflective. but also as of yet, we haven't seen any police along the route. we're at penn station, you saw police cars lining up some with their shields and s.w.a.t. regalia heading the opposite direction. but so far it's been peaceful, no police. but the crowd is exuberant. they're excited. once we round this corner and we're closer to city hall we'll see if wewhat will meet the protester there's. yesterday a perimeter set up in front of city hall that had been a place where protesters had been gathering intermittently throughout the day. so again, as we turn this corner, we're just blocks away from city

we gist obtained them at msnbc today. they indicated the charge that was going to be made against freddie gray was possession of a switchblade. it is illegal in the state of maryland to possess a knife with a spring attachment. the question is though how did police know to stop him for that? because the arrest the charging document said that the knife was found on the inside of his front pocket. so that means it wouldn't have been something that was exactly visible. the document indicates he was transported to the police department with no incident and then he was injured at some point during the ride. it doesn't mention the stops we've heard about and it doesn't mention any details about those injuries, ed. >> okay. as you see on our screen tonight exactly what the charge would have been, what is the reaction to that information that has come out today from the folks in baltimore? so much police force was for such a minor detail. >> reporter: everything about this case elicits extreme skepticism. the people part of this

jim cavanaugh, msnbc law enforcement analyst. one last question then again on what we're looking at what we got from the police department saying that there's alliance, fact between three gangs on the ground there. and that therefore, is why we might be seeing what's happening today and why seven officers according to the police department, were injured. >> the police department has to take that threat serious, and they thought it was a credible threat. gangs like the black gorilla family and the crips and bloods are widely known for violence. in atf, we worked on those gangs all the time we had guns they were involved in shootings, they were involved in violence. so when the police say that's a credible threat, you know, on the heels of the two nypd officers involved in brooklyn they have to take it seriously. so they have to take the appropriate measures to keep the officers safe. but i think we're all concerned that one officer wuss severely injured and was unconscious and others maybe suffered some broken bones. so the depart

. >> reporter: msnbc's casey hunt reporting live inside camden yards. it was saturday night, the 25th, where there was an issue with protesters and violence that broke out in baltimore city that kept fans that were inside camden yards for a game that night trapped for their own safety. it was just a short time ago that i had a chance to sit down with one of the orioles' top executives. vice president from communications and marketing. he explained the rationale for closing add it's game to the ticketed public:high also told me when fans can expect to see a game in their favorite ballpark again. explain today why no fans coming. >> yeah, it was a tough decision. obviously we always would want our fans here for games. it's part of baltimore, a part of the downtown experience, it's part of summers in what we say is birdland. at the same time the security of our fans the safety issues and the fact that we felt that city resources needed to be deployed elsewhere and shouldn't be taken up at a baseball game. because of those decisions -- and they were tough -

joining me now is msnbc's national correspondent joy reid. i know that you've spent part of the day at the empowerment sanctuary. how are the youngest in the community, those who are aware of what's happening, how are they reacting today? >> well alex we were as you said at the empowerment temple which is pastor jamal brown's church on the west side of the city, which opened its doors, something they wouldn't normally be doing so they could take in parents and children all with elementary school all the way up to high school school who had nowhere to go today. and essentially when they allowed people to get up and speak, they had sort of a session in the early part of the day after they fed everyone breakfast and they allowed just anyone to come up to the microphone and speak. and what we heard was a lot of young people who had a very -- i don't want to say pessimistic, but sort of fatalistic view. one young man who looked to be maybe about 18 years old, he called the freddie gray killing just sort of business as usual and he worried that a y

"can a conspiracy pertain to an event over multiple days or a single event?" what does that tell you? >> that the jury is going through each and every count in this case. there are about 30 counts they are considering. 17 of them would carry the death penalty as a possible punishment and that tells me that they are going through each and every count, making sure that they are getting this right. i still think that in terms of the first phase of this trial, jose the prosecutors have proven their case. the defense attorneys have admitted that tsarnaev was involved that he did commit this crime. they're just saying that he's less culpable than his older brother. i still think you're going to have a fairly quick resolution in the first part of the case and that he will be convicted on most if not all 30 counts. >> and then in the second phase, i guess it would be an opportunity for his lawyer to put hi
