by nick. >> mt. st. helens 9,677-foot sleeping volcano nestled in the abundance of the national forest in southwest washington. on march 20th 1980 mt. st. helens began to show telltale signs that her slumber was ending. >> the cascades were already well established. running through northern california through oregon, washington and into canada. there was one peak amongst them that was not so well established. compared to rest, she was a teenage mountain. and like most teens, had growing pains. st. helens is known to have erupted numerous times in the past. in the early and mid 1800s, it erupted again. called this peak basically the same thing, fire mountain. the view from the summit was breathtaking. below lay spirit lake. and below it, mt. rainier. it was a haven for youth camps. the ymca's camp being the first. thousands of youngsters flock to the lake over the years learning how to row a boat even when the oar locks wouldn't stay put. sailing a wind that seemed to have rise from the blue/green depths

diablo and south of mt. hamilton tomorrow afternoon, we could see a few hilltop showers and still ongoing showers out towards the sierra. it's the first half of the week that continues the cool pattern we've been seeing for most of this weekend. so, for the morning, lots of clouds, temperatures in the 50s. as we head towards lunchtime, we'll start to see a little more sunshine inland, but those numbers are not really warming up a whole lot. upper 50s to low 60s and mid-60s once again for highs. and again, watching those hills, especially up on the coastal range, to the areas north of napa tomorrow might see an isolated shower. 67 degrees in san jose tomorrow, mid-50s around pacifica upper 50s around san francisco. and from the north bay to the tri-valley temperatures in the 60s. and overall temperaturewise, not much change for the first half of the week through wednesday. you can see around the south bay, we'll be staying in the mid-to-upper 60s. san francisco quite cool as well. and for the north bay and tr

when that earthquake happened a mile beneath mt. st. helen's 35 years ago today thus started a huge volcanic eruption in the continental united states. it blew more than 1300 feet off the top of that mountain in washington state. the whole northside of that mountain collapsed and quickly that collapse was the largest landslide in recorded history. rock and searing hot gases shot sideways out of the collapsed mountain going hundreds of miles an hour trees came down as far as 12 miles away from the initial blast. the eruption started that morning at mount st. helens at 8:30 in the morning, it kept erupting all day long till it ended finally just after 5:00 p.m. in that day's work, that huge volcanic eruption shot 500 million tons of volcanic ash into the air. that ash rose in a huge vertical column that went straight up for 15 miles. and then it started drifting. it started spreading around the globe. by lunchtime the ash from the eruption was raining down in significant quantity on the city of spokane which is 250 miles away from mt. st.

these are sherpas that help climbers up mt. everest. they're going to focus their efforts not on helping climbers trek up the mountains but to help the community with the relief efforts. we heard from information minister that what was once a search and rescue operation is now officially is a relief operation. the sherpa community wants to make sure that they help their country as much as possible. one problem encountered by the climbers is that pathways are completely crowded. there are climbers who are trying to get down from base camp. it will be very unlikely for the climbing season to proceed. but because this is an issue that would cause a huge loss for the trekking industry here, government officials are loathe to comment on it just yet. >> thank you. in kathmandu. in syria security is tighter than usual in that nation's capitol. the syrian army said that a suicide-bomber blue himself up in damascus near government offices and embassies. as reported, there are conflicts stories about the damage it caused. >> residents of the dist

from mt. tam what i really wanted to point out was the treetops.d to hang on to your hats. less windy today. partly cloudy throughout the weekend and then we'll be cooler than average pretty much the rest of the next workweek. so, here's why. with the pacific satellite image that area of low pressure that brought us the wild and erratic weather thursday and friday has moved east. but we still have hoim over the pacific. that brought us the cool and breezy pattern that continued into last night. but we also have this trough dropping in bringing us or keeping our numbers below average through next week. so, we'll still be on the cool side. but let me show you the wind forecast. so nothing like the 37-mile-per-hour gusts we saw at mt. tam yesterday. we're talking 10 to maybe 20 miles per hour from the west. and even sfo gusted to near 30 miles yesterday. highs today similar to yesterday's. maybe just a couple degrees warmer around the bay and into some inland areas. but look for 60 in san francisco. still cloudy at the coast. 58 in half moon bay. the
