we will head back to mt.iablo at 72 degrees which is down, about 78 overnight, and humidity has come up and the air is turning over at 25 percent and winds are the big push gusting up to 24. this afternoon, winds continuing to gust from the northwest at 25 miles per hour, and high temperature in the lower elevations we will be near 90 degrees and humidity will start to drop this afternoon in that 10 to 10 to 20 degree range. not a lot of smoke and here is the rim fire smoke and here are the low clouds along the coast you request see a lot of things we are looking at on our visible satellite. temperatures in the mid-80's to the north of mt. diablo and you can see walnut creek is near 90 and danville near 86 to the firefighters are going to be dealing with the warm conditions in the lower level where the fire came down mt. diablo and headed toward the valley early this morning. right now, 72 in hayward and 72 in mountain view and 75 in san jose and san francisco is at 64 and low-to-mid 70's throughout the north

you are looking up toward mt. diablo where this hillsidison f speaking with a representative from cal fire, he is telling me that parts of this fire have now burned up close to the summit of mt. diablo. that is about 3800 feet. more help is coming to try to contain the flames. i'm told 15 strike teams. cal fire strike teams from around the state will be joining this effort later on today. that means 100 extra firefighters joining in. there have also been throughout the night a number of hand crews that have stayed out here. they tried to create control lines and corral this fire and stop its spread. let me show you the scene from yesterday. this fire is 10% contained. after it broke out at 1:45 yesterday afternoon near morgan territory road. throughout the day, helicopters and air tankers were making drops on this fire. evacuations were ordered for about 100 or so homes. as the homes and ranches were threatened in this area so far the good news no buildings have been lost in this fire. the dry brush in this area a

now as flames burn toward the summit of mt.t underway to protect some historic state buildings and a communications tower up there. engines are there standing by in case the fire gets closer. >>> there's a considerable amount of fuel up there, the structures tend to be nestled back in the fuel areas. it's a concern. we're doing everything we can to get firefighters in there and clear the fuel away from them. a lot more help has been called in today. 15 calfire strike teams have been called in from across the state. that's more than 100 or so firefighters who will be helping out. by the end of the day or at the peablg today, they expect to have -- peak today, they expect to have 500 or so firefighters out on the front lines trying to contain the morgan fire which broke out around 1:45 yesterday afternoon. early on, it was threatening quite a few homes in the area. the good news, so far, no buildings have been lost. we bring you out here to a live picture. most of the fire, the active fire burning up mt. diablo and a lot of these

that is the top of mt. diablo. that's what people are seeing this morning, a lot of the red cross workers taking pictures. now and then you see this really flare up and the orange glow on the ridge. the red cross says they are ready to help anyone who shows up. most people, though, who left, are probably staying with family and friends. because of the threat to their homes evacuations have been ordered now for trail, ridge road, wrestleman park road, east trail, upper trail and lower trail. there are 24 homes in that area. that have been evacuated in addition to the ones evacuated earlier at oak hill lane and curry canyon area. 50 to 75 structures threatened. some telling us they have so much land near their homes that they are afraid if the dry brush goes up in flames that they could lose their home. we spoke with one man who says he wasn't home but his wife was. >> she was nervous, on the phone, she was scared. yeah. definitely. talking to her on the phone i told her not to panic and i could feel panic in her voi

the morgan hill fire is burning on the eastern side of the mt. diablo. overnight, the fire doubled in size since it broke out yesterday afternoon around 1:30 and we just received new numbers on how big the fire is right now. so far, it has burned more than 3,000 acres. these are live pictures of some of the fire lines from newschopper2. crews are getting a handle on it and right now it's 20% contained and nearly 100 homes are under a mandatory evacuation. rosemary orozco is tracking the fire conditions and brian flores is talking to evacuees. we begin our coverage with tara moriarty who joins us live near the fire lines in clayton. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're at the end of curry canyon. you can see the ridge up there. we've noticed flames leap up over the ridge several times since we've been here for the of past couple of hours. now it seems it's quieting down. the smoke is a whitish color. it appears things are getting better. it's lows smoky than it was a couple of hours ago. the wind had picked up. it's erratic. a care car

the winds right now, i'm noticing at mt. diablo, shifting just a bit from the northeast which means if you are in the dublin area, perhaps livermore, you may smell smoke coming your way. for the afternoon, it will be primarily from the west that means if you are around brentwood, antioch, closer to tracy, you may smell the smoke in the afternoon. the smoke advisory will go on for the afternoon today. hope official we'll be able to get ride of that by tomorrow -- rid of that by tomorrow. the cooler impacts have having an effect on us. more on that later. >> thank you. >>> station 11 was forced to cut back operating hours this summer due to budget cuts after voters refused to pass a parcel tax. the firefighter union president says that closure had a direct impact on the morgan fire. >> yeah, definitely impacted the response. i mean, station 11 would have been part of that initial response. i don't want to say what would have happened. they could have been on another call in other situations, but with the station being closed,

so this is what we're working with when it comes to the mt. diablo fire. 76 degrees, 24% humidity and wind is still rather strong, sustained at 13 miles per hour. out of the west. and we're getting gusts to about 20 miles per hour. let's talk about wind later on today. where you see the blue, 10-mile-per-hour sustained speeds at about 4:00 p.m. the winds are going to be relaxing today. we saw them pick up yesterday afternoon and that hampered the efforts of firefighters. they also shifted. as we head throughout the day that's a cool ocean breeze out of the west that means humidity levels come up. the temperatures are going to be hot. 90 degrees at 4:00 p.m. 15% humidity. we expect the winds to come out of the west-southwest from 10 to 15 miles per hour but down from the 20 to 25-mile-per-hour that we saw yesterday. that could be helpful for firefighters at least it will be more comfortable for them with temperatures dropping out by about 5 to 7 degrees from yesterday. still toasty in livermore. but you hit 101 yesterday so i'm sure that 93 is

yesterday, on mt.kened hillside and downed power lines. fire officials say the fuel beds have been very dry this summer. >> the fire behavior firefighters have seen across the state of california and the western united states has been extraordinary. it's another level of complexity for our firefighters when they are out there fighting the fire. and then you add wind, low humidity and heat. it makes for a tough battle. >> reporter: monday night, winds whipped embers across morgan territory road threatening homes. crews were able to hold the fire back. the morgan fire has burned more than 3200 acres so far on the eastern slopes of mt. diablo. no homes were lost and there have been no serious injuries. keep in mind, rainy season is bearing down on us. there's the potential for mudslide. the chief is very concerned. he says that his crews are gonna be working very hard to try to prep the mountain for the winter. we're live in dublin, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> investigators still searching for

mt. diablo continues to grow. hundreds of firefighters from all over california have been called in to help battle the flames. >> good morning. it's 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the so-called morgan fire has more than doubled in size. so far 3700 acres have burned and the fire 20% contained. firefighters trying to protect 100 structures including some homes. bob redell is live where we'll get an update on the efforts in about an hour. >> good morning. can you hear me? >> go ahead, bob. >> reporter: spoke with cal fire and they said they are not going to do the 6:00 a.m. update. so here is the update. give you an update. yesterday morning at this time the morgan fire had burned 1500 acres, by yesterday afternoon, 3700 acres. here's the update. then the fire's growth has stopped. last night the fire had not groep. this is in part because of the wind changed direction forcing the fire to blow back in on itself and because of the work of firefighters. there are 700 of the

evacuation orders have been lifted but mt.ate park is still closed until further notice to the general public. several small outbuildings burned. tara moriarty is live at the fire scene to tell us how there's concerns of erosion. >> reporter: well, good morning. the fires may be over and firefighters should be gone by this weekend, but there's a new concern. if you look over my shoulder, you can see that mt. diablo is clear from smoke but that new concern is the potential for mudslides. when we talked to calfire yesterday, they said the biggest task right now is the rehabilitation of the mountain. we've learned that state parks has yet to ask a special landslide team to evaluate mt. diablo. experts say intense fire kims roots that -- kills roots that hold soil. and calfire says bulldozers destroy a to the of top soil -- a lot of top soil. so they will need to recede. >> the rainy season is around the corner. we have to recede to get the mountain back to where it can sustain the winter. >> reporter: managers are finding the bar

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from mt.iablo to show us what fire crews are doing now to get the fire completely under control. tara? >> reporter: we're close to the summit. crews have been schedule offing hot spots trying to make sure none of the flames re-ignite in the wind. if we take a look over here, you can see how it looks like no-man's-land and this tree, half of it was spared but the other half completely charred. over there, you can actually see where the fire stopped. right now, calfire is at 70% containment and hopes to have everything fully under control by friday. at 8:00 this morning, hundreds of firefighters left base camp in dublin and headed for the mountains. there are nearly 1400 firefighters. many will be released today, however. calfire has lowered the number as acreage burned 3,133 acres. it's lifted evacuation orders for dozens of families out of their homes. >> what our focus will be, keep it in the box. we have it pretty much contained, but it's not out. there's still a lot of interior burning goin

i look at mt. diablo right now and these are the current conditions on mt. diablo at 3,800'.degrees. the relative humid is 90 percent. the winds picked up and from the northwest at 18th. they were coming from the northeast yesterday and only around seven miles per hour. gusting up to 12 miles per hour. now they are from the northwest and blowing out around 18 miles per hour. i imagine that is the reason why the fire has wrapped around the east side and on the south side. you can see a distinct glow behind blackhawk the big subdivision in the hills to mt. diablo. it is working down to the south&up the south side of the mountain. that is what i can see this morning. our reporter, amy hollyfield, is gathering information on the scene. we will have a report shortly. overnight the flames grew from 800 acres to a thousand acres chars. crews will be on the scene for several days to monitor brushfire that burned 40 acres near sonoma off highway 121. it spread to a factory and several structures were destroyed along with factory equipment and power lines. >> we evacuated. when a fire
