landslides and mudslides we have had the main amount of fatalities reported in mudslides in the central part of the country and essentially there are further warnings that there can be further mudslides. so people have been advised to be alert. there are areas where disaster management authorities have evacuated people and are keeping a close watch on the weather. the worst part for people around the country is that the weather forecast is not good. essentially more heavy rain for the foreseeable future. >> in syria, bashar al-assad's government says it's ready to talk to the opposition to try and end the almost four year long civil war. now this is in response to russia's proposal for dialogue after two rounds of peace talks failed earlier this year. the syrian government says it is open to preliminary consultations in moscow. russia is planning to host the talks between the assad government and the opposition in late january but not sure who is going to take part. kimberly halkett is reporting. >> syrian government and its opposition will have peace talks but i can tell you this will

of course, they are impacted by these mudslides. mudslides are a common occurrence.ood to see that the community is banding together to help to save those less fortunate animals out there. this is the weather situation that's actually happening across central java. through april we see a wave in the way of low pressure setting up south of the island chain. this is called the intertropical convergence zone. it moves north and south, depending on the time of the year. it sends the low pressure systems across the islands. you can see what i'm talking about. look at the wave after wave of moisture across central and eastern java. this is the rainfall that brought the mudslides to the central parts of this region. 200 millimeters plus recorded from some of the remote sensing issued by an agency just outside of europe. now, this is a look at the topography. you can see why this area is susceptible to mudslides. it is mountainous terrain. just slid off the hill. basically gravity taking over. the heavy rainfall soaks in to the soil. fertile ground across the region and even

we have a live helicopter picture over the lands end area where there has been a mudslide. the dog better not get too close. nbc bay area's mark matthews is live on the phone. mark, what can you tell us? >> scott, it looks like a slope about 50 yards long. in most places, not very deep. maybe three, four feet that has slid away on this very edge, the coastal trail. at one spot where i'm standing now, it looks maybe six, seven deep, where a lot of mud has slid down this ravine toward the ocean. there's tree stunts, there's trees in the way, slid down cypress trees it looks like, a couple of them have slid down the hill, they have got it taped off with yellow tape and i'm told that because the park service is short staffed today and tomorrow and this week, this probably will not be addressed until some time next week, but in the meantime, the coastal path is still open. this is just a few yards from "uss san francisco" memorial out here at lands end. and you can see folks walking by and taking a look and pretty significant slump. right now, nobody working on it and i think it

but these mudslides are unpredictable. it's hard to tell where they will hit.it's a concern. >> let's get to the now, kelly, what is demanding your most immediate attention? >> right now, what we are doing is the recovery process, so in los angeles, there is almost a dozen homes down there hit by that landslide there. we've got parts of the pacific coast highway up in san francisco that are closed because of the landslide and the road washed out. we still have some folks in california that are without power. the utility isn't working today. they continue to work to restore power in areas. hopefully, we will reset for this next storm and not suffer as bad an impact we have seen over the last couple of days. >> kelly, how are the residents coping? >> interesting enough, in a storm like this, a significant storm, you would see folks obviously disturbed by i. we did have some people impacted. a lot of people are saying, hey, bring on the rain. we need it. california has been going through a severe drought. it took us three years into it. we are hoping we will get m

a mudslide is blocking tennessee valley road about a quarter of a mile east of the trail head and the golden gate national recreation area. marin county maintains the road and says it will be closed for at least 48 hours, but again more rain is coming at the end of the week. >> in santa rosa, a huge you caw help toc -- eucalyptus tree fell trapping a driver. a crew worked to clean it up. >> the rain-slicked roads may be to blame for a crash. a car slid into two other vehicles. two people were taken to the hospital. >>> in san mateo, huge drops pummeled the streets. the rain came down so quickly that it started backing up streams. the south bay really got hammered by the storm last week. and it really got its share again tonight. a lot of rain in a short amount of time means problems. lisa amin gulezian is live along 280 with flooding and downed trees. >> we are on the bird avenue overpass and from here we have a great vantage point. at one point both north and southbound -- parts of north and southbound 280 were closed, but look now. everything is fortunately wide open. two lanes abou

the heavy rain caused a mudslide along the pacific coast highway. a six-mile stretch of the road was shut down. on saturday powerful waves covered the boardwalk. some homes were evacuated. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has more on our two storm systems. now we're watching a larmer storm system. it's showing up beautifully here. this is coming in monday night into tuesday morning. heavy rainfall from northern california right on down to southern california. for many the biggest storm you've seen since february. the rain is a good thing. however, enough of it is a problem. flash flooding could be issues. areas of mudslides in recent burn zones from northern down into southern california. another story we're watching, windchill advisories up in the upper midwest to northern plains. feels like 40 below zero. this cold air is spilling into the midwest and right on down across the plains all the way down to texas by the morning. this is where we'll see windchill in the single digits. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> fo

we have more on the heavy rain and threat of mudslides. jennifer london is in glendora, california, with more. jennifer? >> reporter: john, good evening. one of the cities in southern california that is at most risk of heavy mudslide or debris flow is the city of glendora, it's about 30 miles east and south of los angeles. it is a community of 50,000 people, and the majority of homes are nestled against the foothills of the san gabriel yell mountains. the reason why this area is at risk of a mudslide or debris flow is because of the colby fire that destroyed 200 acres and left many hillsides around here denuded, which means it left it without brush and trees. the rain is coming down so quickly, that the ground is not able to absorb it be, and that causes mudslides. they have set up a sandbag distribution center about 18,000 sandbags have been distributed so far. voluntary evacuations are in effect so far, but there may be mandatory evacuations. right now there are no major debris fields flowing, but it will be a tense night for homeowners
