boeing has announced that its chief executive, dennis muilenberg, is stepping down. has faced serious criticism in the aftermath of two major accidents involving boeing's new 737 max planes, in which a total of 346 people died. last week, the company announced it was halting production of the aircraft. in a statement, the company said a change of leadership was needed to restore confidence. our business correspondent, theo leggett, gave us some background a little earlier. he presided over an era where boeing came out with its flagship aircraft which we now know contained a flaw, which should never have got past regulators, and it was allowed to continue flying after the first of those two catastrophic accidents involving a lion air aircraft off indonesia. the plane was allowed to keep flying and another one crashed a few months later in ethiopia. mr muilenburg has come underfire for presiding over an era in which, arguably, some people are saying, the company put production rates and the pursuit of profits over its safety. boeing insists safety is its number one pri

no one has been particularly pleased by the leadership shown by mr muilenberg. regulators. he faced harsh criticism from us lawmakers when he went to testify on capitol hill, with some accusing him of putting profits over people‘s safety, and of course, when it comes to the victims and their families, he has shown very little empathy to what they have been going through. so, regulators had been particularly irritated that mr muilenberg has been pushing for the 737 max to be allowed to fly again. it has been grounded permanently or semi—permanently and production will be halted. what do we expect from the new leadership in terms of what will change? what really needs to change at boeing is a few things. one, there needs to be better communication. there has been a lot of criticism of mr muilenberg on the way he communicated with airlines waiting for these planes to get back in the air, and with regulators trying to get these planes in the air but who won‘t do so unless they have met all of the safety requirements. so the faa has been criticising boeing for not be
