the driver was taken to john muir medical center. he is deceased. >> the witness told his boss the gunman was buckled in his seatbelt. this started with a traffic stop on 680 south. the aftermath is captured on radio communications between the dispatcher and a responding officer. >> nobody else is 1097 yet. >> 10-4. the description of the subject, suspect or anything like that. >> negative. he just said officer was down. have i been trying to call and no response. >> i-680 was closed for much of the day leading to massive traffic jams in and around walnut creek as police turned the freeway into a temporary crime lab. one of the unanswered questions is why one of the chp cars was in front of the suspect's jeep and not behind the vehicle they stop. >> that's something we are taking a close look at. i will not address exactly the procedures a the this time. >> police have not said why the officer pulled over that car in the first place. at his home base the officers have been keeping a vigil. in martinez, abc7 news. >> john, thank you.

condition and some exclusive video after the shooting >> a lot of hopes and prayers are coming to john muir medical center where officer youngstrom is on life support. members of his family, officers from the chp and extended family have been keeping vigil here at a hospital all night long. youngstrom was shot yesterday morning by the driver of a jeep that was pulled over on 680. you're looking at cellphone video from a witness who saw the moments after the officer was shot. a lot of the video is too graphic show on television. another officer opened fire on the jeep driver who later died from his injuries. the witness says he saw the second officer shoot up to 10 times shattering a window >> i saw when the cops started shooting the guy in the jeep and as soon as he shot the guy in the jeep, he ran to the police car and i guess he called for backup. >> in that video we can see to chp cars. we understand youngstrom was driving the car in front of the jeep. a lot of questions this morning about who is driving that sheet. it was registered last to a person in a point. the owner apparently coul

he is at john muir medical center in walnut creek. tran is following the latest developments. >>will: he has been here for 24 hours after being shot at 8:30 a.m. yesterday. officers are coming into going. here is video that we got of three different chp officers are writing to the place. they have been coming here ever since their colleague was shot. other agencies are also coming. we do know at this point he is still on a life-support in critical condition fighting for his life. it does not look very good. his family members from as far away as southern california are by his bedside. we hope to get an update on his condition from the chp little bit later. here is the latest on the investigation. traffic was backed up yesterday for hours. according to the chp spokesperson he said they're looking into a couple of theories on why the suspect was pulled over in the first place. he might have had expired tags. they're looking into that possibility. also, before the shooting to please the chp received phone calls of numerous people that th

family man, a dedicated chp officer died tonight here at john muir medical center, 34 hours after he was shot on interstate 680. >> this evening at approximately 6:05 p.m. officer kenyon youngstlum was pronounced deceased. >> they didn't expect him to survive after a bullet to his head severed his spinal cord. his organs will now be donated. >> this has been a tragedy for the family and certain lay tragedy that has affected all deeply to the core. >> chp officers came and went in a constant stream to the emergency room at john muir medical center. >> one hour after his death, a chp helicoptercled the hospital flashing lights in what appeared to be a salute to the fallen officer. >> the family wanted to once again express their deepest gratitude to the law enforcement family, first responders, medical staff, members of the public. you've been amazing. it's important that you guys know, he absolutely loved his job and the service that they did. all us and in the community, truly. >> reporter: a fund to help out the officer's wife and four children has been set up and docks will be acce

we saw employees drop off dinner for all the officers who have gathered inside john muir, those samefficers offering prayers for the family of kenyon youngstrom. tonight, kenyon youngstrom is on life support at john muir medical center. >> we'll been told that the injuries are not compatible with human life. having been told that, that puts things into perspective. >> reporter: today sam morgan and other officers poured into the hospital one at a time, showing support for youngstrom and his family. >> very, very heavy heart. we're just trying to process it and manage it in a healthy matter. >> reporter: at the same time -- >> my dad was with lapd for many years. >> reporter: another show of support as john lopez and others dropped off flowers outside youngstrom's field office. some do not want to be named because they say the story is not about them. >> the officer put his life on the line to protect the citizens around him, and i think too many time
