david muir. >> reporter: diane, good evening.or the first time the detailed account from inside that room, those horrific moments when that army specialist opened fire. tonight, a mother and father on their way to see their son, sergeant jonathan westbrook, shot four times. one of the first hit, he survived. the eldest westbrook driving from mississippi to texas, telling us his son revealing how it played out. he was shot four times? >> he was shot four times. >> reporter: what did your son tell you about what he witnessed before the shooting? >> the soldier had come into his office and he'd had some words with my son's supervisor. and he was asking for a form to execute a leave. some leave time. and they suggested he come back the next day and so, he left just as they had suggested that he leave. but, only to return with a weapon, a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. a handgun. and shot one person right in my son's presence. and then turned the gun on my son, shooting him four times. twice in the arm, twice in the chest. and then

david muir is here with what he said. >> we've covered so many of these cases. every time, a community asks what could have led to this that led to such horror? tonight, investigators with our first look into the mind of the teenager, taking aim, stabbing fellow students, knifing a security guard in the stomach. police say he told the vice principal that he wouldn't let go of the knives saying my work is not done. i have more people to kill. we've also learned that investigators discovered a note in his locker dated april 6th. three days before the incident. in it, his apparent disgust with his own school. police say he wrote, he couldn't wait to see the faces of the students. realize their lives are going to be taken by the only one among them that isn't a plebeian. prosecutors have upgraded the charges against him. investigators believe the attack was planned at just after 7 a.m. >> reporter: investigators still have not offered a motive for the attack. his family ate dinner together every night. his father stunned in the hours afterward. >> my prayers go out

jim muir is in beirut for us. you've been to the camps many times.he final comment we heard was about hope. these people still have hope. how are so many of them managing to survive? >> well, we have heard of people literally dying of starvation in lebanon. they are clinging on. a lot of them living in extremely harsh conditions. like 30% of the total who are living in what you call camping conditions in outlying areas, living in shacks they have put up with bits of wooden frames covered in plastic and so on. the problem is in lebanon it doesn't allow formal counts. you have lots and lots of inf m informal settlements and camping out in field. they can get workers laboring, gathering crops. it is hot in the summer. uncomfortable hot. but uncomfortable cold in the winter as well. people are going through very hard times and skrimping and saving to get by on the level of surviving with food and heating and so on. >> i remember you standing in the snow at one of the refugee camps just a few months ago. how is it affecting sanitation and rubbish disposal

jim muir joins me from beirut. i was struck by the first man there saying life was better in syria than it is in lebanon. what does that tell us about the conditions they're in, jim? >> well, certainly conditions for many of those refugees are extremely grim. not all of them. some refugees have money. they can afford to representative apartments and so on. quite a large proportion, 30% are living in squalor, shanty settlements, some of them exposed and outlying. they go back to the good old days before they became refugees. a lot of them, as i say, living in very makeshift conditions. it gets very cold here in the winter. people think it is hot. it is not hot all the time. but it gets hot in the summer. you're equally uncomfortable either way. so basically they are feeling very hot. one lady set fire to herself last year in protest. the aid agencies are underfunded. they are getting less than 15% of what they are asking for to cope with this massive strain imposed on them. and of course lebanon and the lebanese. we
