so that is the news conference with the mayor of charleston joe riley as well as greg mullen the police chief. they are bringing us to speed with some terrible news on this heartbreaking story. we want to bring in benji, who has been covering this story all night. it is unthinkable. we're hearing nine people killed? that has been confirmed? >> reporter: that's right, according to the police chief of charleston. they found eight dead at the scene after it was called in at approximately 9:05 p.m. two people were transported to the hospital and one died there. one of them is a long time state senator. the police say they are not prepared to release any more information about the victim. if any are wounded. but, one thing they did say is that an earlier bomb threat is no longer in effect. they say the bomb threat is over now. that is one less concern that they are now dealing with in what the police chief described earlier as a chaotic scene. >> that's pretty significant. and another thing, i am referring to the police chief. he was asked did you think this was a hate crime and he said why.

were just listening to the charleston city police chief gregory mullen there talking about the eventsed. the emanuel ame church is a historic african american church possibly the most historic african american church here in our country. it traces its roots back to 1860 when several churches split from charleston's methodist episcopal church. presidential candidate jeb bush canceled many scheduled appearances he had there in charleston for thursday. that campaign stopped. like i said it's all been canceled. recapping there has been a shooting at the emanuel ame church in downtown charleston. it happened around 9:00 wednesday night. officials and the city's mayor confirming nine people have died in what they're calling a hate crime. they say there are survivors. they're not saying how many and they're not identifying those who have died or those who have survived at this point. we know it was in the church they were having a bible study or meeting of sorts when a man came in and opened fire that man is described as a 21-year-old white male clean-shaven slender, small build, blue jeans.
