liz: what about that, congressman mullen? do you expect there will be a budget deal and to find the money for that, got to fire up the old money printer? >> well, i really do believe eventually we're going to get to a deal, but when you start having a debt issue, you need to make sure we have our priorities right, and right now we have a debt problem, no question about it. we had a very successful tax bill that passed that's going to stimulate the economy. we know that's going to take place. when we start looking at priorities, priorities as a government is to make sure we secure our people's security. meaning that national security defense is and should always be at the top of the topic when we're talking about funding. if we want to talk about domestic spending, rather than discretionary, get into mandatory spending. we talked to colleagues on the other side of the aisle multiple times and said if we want to increase discretionary spending for domestic programs we need to offset it with the mandatory spending side of it. le

congressman mullen, do you believe this has a chance to pass and would you push for its passage? >> look. everything in that bill, the democrats in both chambers are on record supporting. so, absolutely. we support anything that moves the ball down the road and in what has been happening here is party politics has got in the way of funding the government. with the chip program, with reauthorization placed on spending, these are the same numbers that obama was operating under. everything on this bill, not one thing on there should be controversial so this bill should be able to be pass inside both chambers easily. >> congressman price? >> i hope that's right. the question is not the length of time so much. the question is does -- >> let's start there. would you support to pass this three-week continuation, this cr to then continue the conversations for immigration? while the government is open. >> reporter: i hope so. because the question is does it move us toward a long-term resolution of this budget issue? you know, we -- we could have done this six months ago. but here, for the

what do you make of admiral mullen's assessment? >> well, i think he can see that there isn't a strong diplomatic front, there isn't a strong outreach to get north korea to the table. also, you can see in kim jong-un's speech that he detects that the south korean people are fearful, they're on the firing line. yes, the u.s. might face a nuclear strike by north korea, but we also have counter measures that could likely knock such a missile out of the sky. south korea is under the firing line of all of that artillery from the north and it's been estimated that in the first 48 hours of any conflict, that tens of thousands of south koreans would die. so he is opening a front by offering them the olive branch, saying there is another way out of this, a sort of divide and conquer strategy that probably won't work, but it certainly mudedies the waters. >> what about the very mixed messages we got as paula went through from kim jong-un? he says in this new year's day address to his own people well, as a nation have to accelerate this missil
