i love the mural on the corner of francis and michigan's street. i just noticed it for the first time -- at the corner of one street. thank you for that. it is really a wonderful testament to what our neighborhood is about. eric, who i do not seen here with us, who has done an amazing work over the years across san francisco. he is a native of this area and has been a resident for many years. he highlights people's struggles and raising awareness for social consciousness. daron, thanks for being here. he has roots in social activism. he is a muralist and teacher, currently a lead instructor at a youth based arts program in the mission. he has nearly all of the way throughout california and down into mexico. also, folks we may not have won four. dan, he woworked on another project. nico, your children? great. he has merrill's all over the world, including in gonna and west africa. there is an avid skateboarder and designer. thank you for your work in our district, and ethan is also a contributor to the project. i just want to say thank you so much f

some people wanted to preserve the mural. others wanted to get rid of the mural. and we believe in a dialogue. so we brought together in mediation everyone so we could come to an understanding of what our common ground was and to see if we could agree on certain basic things, and we were able to come up with a solution that makes sense for the entire community. in a sense, it reflected larger issues that are impacting the city as a whole. so, there are issues like that that would require a knowledge of the neighborhood, and knowledge of what is happening on the ground, and knowing the difference is of how all bernal heights may look at an issue vis a vis the mission or portola. as a supervisor, i do have to be able to balance managing citywide issues, which is very important, but at the same time, focusing on the specific needs of your neighborhood. that is really important to us. one of the things we need to prioritize is that making sure we focus on the nuts and bolts of government. a lot of the calls we get involved fixing alights, replacing a pothole. i think

now these murals. i want to thank the people who got our two artists here. their work is presented here, in this unveiling of these advertising murals. and we are going to do more of this. we want to do all of this in partnership with neighborhoods. that is what randy is all about. i loved working with him because he and everyone in this neighborhood wants to take pride in where they live and work. we see kids growing up in the tenderloin. they need to know the history of this area. we also need to make sure that not only are they safe, but that they appreciate the history of this neighborhood. i want to thank everyone is level of cooperation here. we have a piano theater coming in. we have the underground for the clay and ceramics. that will represent the role that part plays in helping us for a revitalization to this neighborhood. we are doing that at central market as well. and we are trying to revitalize this whole street. this is ground zero for where arts and civic minded this come together with local government, to forge a ongoing partnerships to make

. >> let's look at the beautiful mural. i have never seen a mural created on asphalt. >> the heat of the asphalt, a new layer of asphalt. then, these wire rope templates that were fabricated for the line work get laid down and literally stamped into the asphalt, and then everything was hand-painted. >> maybe you could talk about some of the symbolism, maybe starting in the middle and working out. >> [inaudible] the flower of industry. >> it is like a compass. there's an arrow pointing north. >> within the great bear consolation, there are two pointed stars here. they typically lead one to the northstar, otherwise known as polaris. so i thought it has a layer of theme. >> let's talk about some of the other elements in the peace. we are walking along, and there is a weather vane. there's a sweet little bird hanging on the side. what kind of bird is that? >> [inaudible] the smallest of the gulf species, and it lives around the bay area. >> you want to talk about the types of flour patterns that you send? >> [inaudible] around

i drive by cobb a lot and one day i nearly crashed the car when i saw the mural. i'm just wondering if it's possible to put a copy of the presentation on the district website because i just would love for more people to see these pictures close up and if you would email me a copy for my own website i would love that. >> it was my intent to do that, which is why i didn't bring copies. it's an enormous file. these are verying very high resolution photographs, a lot of them taken by professional photographers, i can't email it to you but i can burn you a c.d. or load it on a u.s.b. key. commissioner wynns: i heard the buzz about cobb and made a trip out there for the purpose of seeing it. i have seen some of these others. i want to sewallenberg, haven't seen that, since we built the spaceship, i want to see it. i want to ask about the principal center, about the brickwork. i have heard the story -- story of of the presentation of the brickwork at roosevelt through one of our previous, even before my time, field act programs and i am really fascinated by seeing this s

murals -- are they signs? are they regulated in the planning code? >> no. there are allowances and projecting murals but generally can be considered art and it's something that we definitely want to encourage for that area and people would come and tag my door and i wish i would have a nice mural on it and they would think twice and it's important fabric of the city. >> is there anything in the code that encourages art -- >> part of the planning code has things for art depending on the size of the project and we open everyone would do it on their own and enjoy it. >> this is fantastic. >> i mean one of the interesting things and the mission bay and that obviously the mission is a really rich place to find murals but that a lot of what gets called the mission school in the art world today came out of people who really were very interested and celebrated old signs and cataloged them and encorporated them into their work and several artists and from their early work went around the mission and sketching the old signs and the hand painting them and doing them i
