some of the murals suffered wear damage. we really began to organize getting funding through the arts commission and various other sources to restore the murals. they don't have that connection or thread or maintain that connection to your history and your past, what do you have? that's one of the major elements of what makes quality of life in san francisco so incredible. when people ask me, and they ask me all the time, how do you get to coit tower, i say you walk. that's the best way to experience the gradual elevation coming up above the hustle and bustle of the city and finding this sort of oasis, if you will, at the top of the hill. when i walk through this park, i look at these brick walls and this lawn, i look at the railings around the murals. i look at the restoration and i think, yeah, i had something to do with that. learning the lessons, thank you, landmarks meet landmarks. the current situation at pioneer park and coit tower is really based in public and private partnership. it was the citizens who came togethe

. >> let's look at the beautiful mural.never seen a mural created on asphalt. >> the heat of the asphalt, a new layer of asphalt. then, these wire rope templates that were fabricated for the line work get laid down and literally stamped into the asphalt, and then everything was hand-painted. >> maybe you could talk about some of the symbolism, maybe starting in the middle and working out. >> [inaudible] the flower of industry. >> it is like a compass. there's an arrow pointing north. >> within the great bear consolation, there are two pointed stars here. they typically lead one to the northstar, otherwise known as polaris. so i thought it has a layer of theme. >> let's talk about some of the other elements in the peace. we are walking along, and there is a weather vane. there's a sweet little bird hanging on the side. what kind of bird is that? >> [inaudible] the smallest of the gulf species, and it lives around the bay area. >> you want to talk about the types of flour patterns that you send? >> [inaudible] around 1926 or

. >> the mural's a great place. it's the friendly place that everyone goes to when they have an inspirational feeling, and everyone's just so nice, and work gets done here. they actually get, boom, boom, boom, work. >> here is where students at william mckinley junior high school go to learn on their own time. >> we mostly come at 7:00 in the morning, and sometimes we stay after school. we've even spent our lunch periods in mr. buxton's class, trying to get in as much work as we can. >> no extra credit. all they get is a cup of hot chocolate. >> language-arts teacher tom buxton dreamed up the project -- a giant mural that stretches half the length of a football field. it started when a student approached mr. buxton with an unusual piece of art. >> a young lady handed me a refrigerator magnet that had an image of rosie the riveter on it. >> rosie the riveter is a popular image from world war ii, created by american artist norman rockwell. >> and when i thought about it, it resembled an image on the sistine chapel cei

some people wanted to preserve the mural. others wanted to get rid of the mural. and we believe in a dialogue. so we brought together in mediation everyone so we could come to an understanding of what our common ground was and to see if we could agree on certain basic things, and we were able to come up with a solution that makes sense for the entire community. in a sense, it reflected larger issues that are impacting the city as a whole. so, there are issues like that that would require a knowledge of the neighborhood, and knowledge of what is happening on the ground, and knowing the difference is of how all bernal heights may look at an issue vis a vis the mission or portola. as a supervisor, i do have to be able to balance managing citywide issues, which is very important, but at the same time, focusing on the specific needs of your neighborhood. that is really important to us. one of the things we need to prioritize is that making sure we focus on the nuts and bolts of government. a lot of the calls we get involved fixing alights, replacing a pothole. i think

rative, paintings that are exploring the notion of beauty and i end up doing those mostly as street murals and canvas work. the other side of me is thunder dog, my designs. we do a lot of mixed media, experimental digital work. the last few years has been like a huge influx of art meeting commer commerce, where artists are working with brands to make, you know, every kind of product you can name. artists can't solely survive just off of selling paintings. last ten years there's been a lot of brands that do collaborations with artists and that finances them. they're licensing their art for an ad campaign. that brand is working like a patron of the arts the way the church used to for michelangelo. a few products that thunder dog have done that are a perfect example of what i love about doing commercial art and collaborating with brands. we worked with puma last year on their fast lab campaign for husain bolt the runner. dell computers two years ago asked me to design laptop covers for them. i ended up creating three posters for the vote for change campaign. we've done a lot of crazy work, al

serving as a backdrop is a mural featuring images of local birds and san francisco's famous skyline. >> in the line between that is so natural, you can see birds and be in complete wilderness. i really like that about this. you could maybe get a little snapshot of what they are expecting. >> it is an interactive, keck sculpture that is interacted with by the visitor. >> they are a lot about and they fall down the belt. it moves the belt up, and if you turn that faster, the butterflies fall in the move of words. >> the art reflect the commission's commitment to acquiring the best work from the bay area and beyond. in addition to the five new commissions, 20 artworks that were already in the airport collection were reinstalled. some of which were historically cited in the terminal. it includes major sculptures by the international artists. as a collection, these art works tell the story of the vibrant arts scene in the early 1960's through the mid-1980s's. the illustrate san francisco's cultural center and a place of innovation that is recognized and the love throughout the world. one

i worked at a high-school that had a mural on the wall. there was a figure, a man dressed in green, split in two. the front have has a gun, a rifle in his hand, military fatigues. the back half has the prison inmate uniform. on top it says choose your dream. so those are your options. we have seen it hurts our families apart. women are the fastest growing population to be incarcerated. we see women's prisons, men's prisons, teenagers -- they have a baby prison for the babies. they build a prison every year based on third and fourth great test scores in black and latino communities around the country. that is a fact. i can give me the documentation on that. so when the police are grabbing us up, it is a function of capitalism. white supremacy and capitalism, they have had a very long dance together. the police are filling the prisons because prisons operate like hotels. they do not make as much money, so police are agents of the state. not only where they serving the interests of the white people, they are protecting those who have and keep
