now lisa murkowski is trying to duplicate his achievement. is doing this from the state of alaska, where no state-in candidate has ever won. but the challenges of running a write-in campaign were not daunting enough, the republican party in washington is considering making things just that much harder for alaska's senior senator. tomorrow her fellow republicans in the senate are expected to vote on whether to punish senator murkowski by stripping her of her leadership position on the energy committee. jeff session already publicly lobbying it at politico.com today to have senator murkowski demoted and stripped of her senate power. so much for the whole collegiality of the senate thing. with the senate turning on her rather viciously, with the tea party groups ripping her to shreds saying the write-in campaign shows utter contempt for the people of alaska even as the same groups remote christine o'donnell after she lost in republican primary in 2006. with all the long odds she is facing and all the myriad craven enemies who would have thought

murkowski says she has been hearing a lot from her constituents. people who are not pleased about the primary results that's one of the reasons for her decision as well. >> when those votes came in on the 24th of august, when they were counted, there was nobody that was more disappointed than i was. but since then, things have happened, events have transpired. there has been an outpouring of support from alaskans all over the state. >> reporter: regardless of what happens, it is going to be an uphill battle for her, for sure. the only person in history to get elected to senate as a write-in candidate was strom thurmond that was back in 1954, way before this tea party we are seeing here in america. >> you mentioned uphill battle to say the lost. many in her own party, the republican party are upset over this. >> reporter: absolutely. a lot of feathers have been ruffled within the gop. a handful of her colleagues in the senate and within the republican party say she simply needs to accept her defeat and stop distracting from the other issues. sarah p

lisa murkowski narrowly lost the g.o.p. nomination to tea party favorite joe miller.his morning. julie kirtz is live with the latest. how did lisa murkowski explain the decision after she lost to go after the nomination and bam write-in candidate? >> she said she is not undermining the republican party with her write-in race, so she is pushing ahead, she said with her decision to run as a write-in and pushing to the center, by the way, as she tries to keep her senate seat. she is already trying to raise money. she had a rally in alaska. had a conference call with supporters yesterday. she is taking on, of course, tea party favorite joe miller. the message today on national television boils down to this. miller, she says is too radical for action and she says outside tea party activists conducted a live smear campaign on his behalf. here is murkowski. >> you had the tea party express, the california based group come in at the end minute in a campaign and run a mud-slinging smear, just a terrible, terrible campaign. with lies and fabrication, and they came in and dumped
