but still a test of murkowski's strength.o the marquee contest of the day, that would be the house republican primary in wyoming. it's the least populous state. the incumbent has a famous name, liz cheney is the congresswoman, her dad was the congressman from wyoming for quite some time, but she not only voted to impeach donald trump one of the ten house prepares to do, she's the vice chair of the january 6th committee. donald trump has endorsed harriet hageman in that race. not a lot of polling in wyoming. the polling we do have suggests cheney will lose that primary today. let's get straight out live to wyoming. jeff zeleny is in wilson, wyoming. cheney hoping for a miracle today. >> reporter: exactly, john. that miracle would come by the way of democratic and independent voters crossing over to vote republican which happens a lot here in wyoming. the wilson schoolhouse, the voting polling place behind me here, is where liz cheney is expected to vote at some point later today. of course, we've been talking to voters all day

murkowski is expected to be in the top four. advances to november, but it does force you to think about the ways she plays a pivotal role in congress. >> let's talk about the ranked choice voting and how it first could affect sarah palin. >> the entire vote systems are designed to reward candidates that have crossover appeal. when you look at sarah palin, she ended up getting the most votes in the top four primary system. but her challenge becomes are you going to be somebody's second or third choice as well too. there's another candidate in this field begic whose grandfather was a former united states senator, his uncle was a former democratic senator. he is a republican, but kind of start to cobble a situation on how someone like that could have crossover appeal. i think it's going to be really interesting to see who ends up on top. but sarah palin wouldn't necessarily benefit from this kind of system. >> democrats if they're being clever about it would vote for begich to shut out republicans from getting to the final? >> righ

this is lisa murkowski, the senator, trying to hold on and a primary. however, it's different here, its ranked choice in alaska, so people will vote for the top four candidates, and even the trump-backed candidate is -- while she could do well, she is likely going to be one of several that move on, including senator murkowski. the other race is obviously former governor -- murkowski obviously one of the senators who voted to convict donald trump in the senate. the other race is also ranked choice. this is to fill the special election for the seat of don young, who served in congress for 49 years. former governor sarah palin, nick baggage, you know that name, his brother mark was asked democratic senator. if this is also ranked choice, but there's two elections, one is special election to fill the seat until january, the other is for the primary, which goes to the general election in november. so we will follow this, probably not going to get those results till about 1:00 a.m., but again, the big news is that liz cheney looks on the way to defeat, we cou
