it occurs to me, congressman murphy, this could have happened anywhere, that this is not a base problem population problem. do you agree or disagree? >> it could have happened anywhere. there are special concerns on a military base but really all throughout the nation the concern is how do we handle mental illness. quite frankly, we're not doing a very good job of it. the military has beefed up a lot of their support but there is a lot of questions involved with how this happens or how any family deals with this. >> congresswoman, do you think that along those lines the military is living up to its promises to veterans and soldiers returning? and by that i mean, i think that we had promised to help them find jobs, to help them with health care problems, be it physical or mental, and to support their lives here as they try to get them back together. are we living up to that promise? >> i think there's more that needs to be done. i think when we look at the confers that we're having now in congress about defense funding and what are our priorities, we have to place at the highest priority

murphy: thank you, madam president. a new announcement today from the secretary of health and human services that 7.5 million people have signed up for private health care exchanges by virtue of the affordable care act. the initial estimates from c.b.o. last fall were that in the best case, about six million people were going to sign up. we have he blown through that enrollment expectation, and still on this floor and in committee hearings as recently as this morning republicans continue to criticize and critique this law with blistering attacks not because they have data on their side, not because they have evidence on their saoeurbgsd -- side, but because their entire electoral strategy for the fall depends on an assault of the affordable care act. the problem, madam president, is that increasingly day by day, as more information comes out about the life-changing, life-altering success of this law, there just is not the evidence to back up the claim from the republicans that the affordable care act isn't working. in f

miss murphy, let me start with you. what does today's case mean to clients like yours and to combine finance? >> i think what today's decision is a big victory for the first amendment and for the rights of individuals who want to exercise their first amendment rights robustly and to support as many candidate ass they choose to support. a diverse array of them with a variety of views, and not to not be artificially limited to supporting, as it was, only nine candidates when there are many more that they may have a strong interest in supporting in whatever way they can. >> sreenivasan: michael waldman what is the difference between eight candidates or 400 candidates? >> i think it's a significant opinion. it's the first time the supreme court has truck down a federal contribution limit since water gas gate since they were imposed. i think it will lead to significantly new corruption. the fact is there are many, many ways that these kinds of contributions to other candidates can be used to evade the campaign finance laws.
