if murphy had one also by a lot, remember the last polling on murphy, the worst that he was doing was six. i talked to summer few people who said that their internal polls showed up by 11, but the polls were completely wrong in new jersey where was. so something bigger is going on out there, and what i think it is, is that the trump vote is not rubbing off on other republicans. they are the key in both virginia and new jersey whereas the white blue collar voter who swamped the democrats -- the republicans are sticking with the republicans the white suburbanites assisting with the republicans, but the democrats are not at least in this election, staying with the democrats the way they did that timeout. this has big implications on the 2022 and 2024 democrat. they have to improve their strategy and turn this around. this is an interesting concept right the trump state, was enough to turn a whole lot of people away from donald trump. glenn youngkin, and ciattarelli, and actively working to avoid most of the trump stink, they touch a little bit of it when they needed to after the voters.

phil murphy has 76%. as it gets closer to 100%, the murphy campaign thinks the governor will get a lot of votes. essex county where newark is, 72% reporting. fill murphy, 712% 2% of the vot. as you look at this map, you will see there is one republican county still with less than 80% of the vote. that is cumberland county with 79% counted. but you can see the vote totals aren't that high. so democrats think there is much more opportunity for phil murphy to grow over the next few hours. all right. let's look at virginia and see where the votes were in new jersey. there was a lot of talk about the suburbs. rightfully so. look at the suburban counties. loudon county, washington, d.c. suburbs, terry mcauliffe leading glenn youngkin by 11 points. it might seem like a lot, but i want to pair it to the presidential race one year ago. you can see it was a 25-point margin from joe biden. you can see glenn youngkin was able to shrink that margin. but the story isn't just in the suburbs. what do i mean? i want to co

the margin that jack ciattarelli leads phil murphy by in ocean county, he's now leading phil murphy in ocean county by a margin the same size that chris christie racked up in ocean county when chris christie won statewide in new jersey, tough for a republican to do, when christie did it ocean county was a big part of the equation. ciattarelli's performance in ocean county tonight looks like chris christie's performance when chris christie won the state of new jersey. so there are places here on the map where ciattarelli can be very happy right now, but there are some very big pieces of the puzzle statewide in new jersey where we're just missing critical information because he's got to do everything i just showed you in a place like ocean, a place like hunterdon. he's got to pitch jack ciattarelli to win new jersey, he's basically got to pitch a perfect game. he's got to make significant inroads everywhere on this map. so we've got to see burlington, burlington, essex. let's see if we get some more vote in essex pretty soon here tonight. but that's what we're waiting on here in new jers

murphy is declaring victory tonight.his has -- you know, it has to have republicans excited for their chances going forward, to have come this close. don't know -- look, maybe it's what the future holds. or maybe it's just a race or two races. who knows? but what do you think of that? >> well, first of all, don, i listened to your opening and i -- i can't disagree with any of it. you and i often disagree but we don't disagree on this tonight. and new jersey kind of shocking to me. but, you nknow, virginia's also something we just can't write that off as well. look. i think what happened is the republicans have greater intensity. the democrats have -- they have been lethargic. i don't know much about new jersey but i can tell you that what i have read about virginia is terry mcauliffe, a good man. he had very, very poor turnouts at his rallies. other guy, youngkin, people were going crazy there, they were enthusiastic. intensity really matters and i think you hit the nail on the head when you talk about the kind of issues

numbered phil murphy is holding a strong lead.update on those votes, where they're still being counted. where do we is thatened? >> so phil murphy's lead just shrunk ever so slightly. he is ahead. so new votes reported from a county where jack ciarretti leads. let me still e tell you exactly how many votes are there. jack ciarrelli clocked in with 4,251 new votes. phil murphy 2,1 naw. that's about 52% and about 47%. so you can see that was able to shrink the lead ever so slightly. the story overall in new jersey, though, so people now, is a little different. if you look, there is 85% of the vote counted so far. where is the remaining vote? largely, we think, in areas that are still leaning democratic. places like hudson county, where jersey city is, 80% so far, phil murphy is way up. he pointed essex county. big urban center. 72% reporting. phil murphy has a big lead there. joe biden won new jersey. substantially by 16 points. i want to show people where this margin has shrunk, you can see jack ciarrelli has 60% of the votes there

running against democratic incumbent governor phil murphy and he hammered murphy throughout this campaignan issue that is a major one for years here in new jersey. it has to do with the high property taxes. new jersey has the highest rate of taxes of any state in the nation. that traditionally has been a republican go to issue in trying to defeat the democrats and it has doomed democratic governors for the past 44 years. try to accuse murphy of being too progressive and liberal for this date on social issues as well as dealing with the budget. earlier this evening, appeared before his joyous supporters and told them he things a victory is just a matter of time. >> i wanted to come out here tonight because i prepared one hell of a victory speech. i wanted to come out here and tell you that we have won. i'm here to tell you that we are winning. we are winning. >> the murphy folks here were not as joyous and optimistic as that. there folks say they are waiting for the democrat rich counties of bergen, essex, and union to finally come in, as well as the mail in votes, have not been fully coun

murphy: yes, ma'am. i agree with you the steps are important, also, as part of the way to get to the outcome. so i'm not arguing with that. there are some improvements we've improved training. i think a big piece of this is the first step after the first report, we specialized to certain designated individuals that were trained in all of our 56 regional offices. the work, then, is routed. the oversight at the regional office to make sure folks are completing the training. second signature reviews are done. that's where we had some gaps. so what we have learned in the past is when we specialize work, it's best to be done in a smaller number of places. so now rather than designated folks in all 56 offices, we've skinnied down right now to five regional offices, about 116 folks on the way to one regional office director being in charge of all of it. ms. brownley: thank you, madam chair. i yield back. chair luria: thank you, representative brownley. i understand representative miller-meeks is back. thank you

you see here phil murphy has 72.9% of the vote. and other democratic county, you know, philadelphia, the surrounding areas of philadelphia, camden, this is an area where phil murphy is at 60%. just 78%, so a lot more potential democratic votes. if you want to know the republican counties that still have some votes to count, somerset, not tiny, a lot of votes there, jack ciattarelli, small edge there, 82% in. in the south, cumberland county, not many votes there, ciattarelli there. if you get a sense of what could happen as the votes keep coming in as the-- i'm sorry, the wal being mean to me, phil murphy at 73%. jack ciattarelli at 25%. we just got a batch of counted votes there. and that vote count was about 6,000 new votes counted there. of the 6,000, phil murphy got 3,889. ciattarelli, 2,157. that is about 63% of the vote. and about 35% of the vote. so you can see as these new numbers come in, from these largely democratic counties, phil murphy should be able to stretch his lead out, which is why the democrats feel better about

phil murphy ran a progressive campaign.ayor, remember, this was back in julian assange. the progressives lost that primary and then, of course, virginia a projected loss to the democrats. so i think there's going to be a lot of reflecting upon what happened last night, what's happened in the last few months. i think that there are a lot of voters who said, you know what, we want to pump the brakes on the democrats and progressives. let's take another look. we want more people moving towards the center of the aisle. >> harry, you're about to go to sleep. anything else before you go night-night? >> yes, i am about to go night-night. i have been awake 21 hours. look, the fact of the matter is the real only question left is new jersey. we pointed out the beginning of the segment. a far closer call for phil murphy than anyone thought it was going to be. it's pretty clear across the board in these races and something i didn't even mention, on long island, you see a bunch of democrats losing. this is not just one place where democ

that's the bad news for murphy. the good news for murphy the vote, it seems to be coming in. the remaining vote that's out there, we're still seeing big batches or significant batches specifically of vote by mail. it looks like a lot of these counties waited until the end to count up the mail ballots. the mail ballots are the most democratic friendly, the most murphy friendly. so you see murphy's got the lead now. if you were watching in the last six to eight hours, he was slowly inching towards ciattarelli's number. he's now above ciattarelli's number. one big one i know we are waiting on is right here in mercer county. this is a pretty good-sized county, where trenton, the state capital is. you can see it's a democratic county. and we are waiting on a couple of things here. one is the vote by mail. so that vote by mail in mercer county, you expect to just be overwhelmingly democratic in murphy. get a lot of votes out of that. also, i think there's some same-day vote that was cast yesterday on election day, also left in mercer county. we'll see if we can get more of the vote

you can see phil murphy has 73% of the vote. 80% reporting here. we just got a new batch of counted votes there. it is 6,000 new votes there. let me tell you how the 6,000 votes broke down. 3,889 for phil murphy. and 2,157, that's a 5, not an 8, i apologize, mom, for that, so you can see where phil murphy is starting to pick up votes in some of these democratic counties as more votes are coming in. i'm going to move this right now and take you through the state to show you how there is 85% reporting now in total. i want to look at the counties where they're, say, 84, 85% less votes counted so far to see where there are still votes left. hudson county, where we just were, 80% reporting, phil murphy way ahead there. essex county, where newark is, 72% reporting, phil murphy has 72% of the vote, more votes to count there from democratic areas. just two counties with a significant part of republican votes left. that's somerset county, not too small, 82% reporting. jack ciattarelli with a four-point lead there, he might be able to keep the margin narrowi

was, well, you know, murphy's winning.hen, whoa, look at this. ciattarelli is getting close. and now, it is going back the other way. we still have this one red and it's atlantic city. but not as populous as camden. >> yeah. this is -- this is the atlantic city county but -- but yeah. the southern part of the state is just not as populous. these -- these are the major areas but this is a -- this is something democrats didn't think they'd have to be fighting in a war of attrition to win new jersey. they are. >> this is what, i think, terry mcauliffe and some democrats are -- what the hell happened in virginia? >> well, let's take a look at what happened in virginia. because it's a big deal and it is a cautionary tale. look. democrats had had a lock on the state, it seemed, in statewide races since 2009. now, mcauliffe knew as a former governor that, actually, virginia with the exception of one out of the last ten since 1973 had always voted for a governor from the opposition party of the new president. it went back to form.

how did murphy do in burlington four years ago? here is the vote total for murphy and his victorious race for the state house four years ago per eight if you come back to 2020 when you see the state of play right now, this is what is confounding as about new jersey and maybe we make a call tonight and maybe we don't, maybe we go to the hours tomorrow wondering who won new jersey. you see right here, 68 percent, want with county, 61 percent. they're our precincts in essex county, that is specifically ne work that are still coming in, heavily democratic as we follow the numbers come up murphy with a handy lead right there in essex county. but you see what he did four years ago. he was up around 80 percent. and at the moment he's not quit at that number, but still prett respectable for the democrats seeking reelection in new jerse so that gives you an idea right here new jersey, it is a real race, and for a lot of people who discount that long before the race was held today. >> bill is going to work 24 hours. brett and martha, what no

murphy won nearly 20,000 of those votes. it's a big reason why he has that margin he has statewide right now. the problem for ciattarelli, what murphy has going for him right now, as you look, where else are there votes in new jersey. essex county is one big source, this is the king of democratic counties in new jersey. what's left in essex county? there are 56 precincts in essex county that have yet to report their votes. there are some issues there. but the precincts are in some of the most extremely democratic cities and towns within what is a very democratic county to begin with. so murphy going to bank some more votes in essex county. paterson, passaic county, similar issues, there are some precincts not reporting from there, heavily democratic, you can expect murphy to get votes from there as well. also camden county, a big democratic area. you can point to a number of spots on the map in new jersey where murphy is likely to gain votes here and you can't find many spots for ciattarelli to counter that. unless he pulls

murphy, look at the raw votes here. i think it's fascinating. he is at 53,000 and ciattarelli is that 51,500. i'll show you what came in four years ago when murphy won he was at 56,000 and you see for the republican it was 36,000. come back to 2021 and watch this number. do the math in your head. he increases the turnout by 15,000 votes in a blue county and made it very competitive. i think you can send a clear -- you can do that all over the state of new jersey. republicans came out to vote and that was evident. you come down to the shore and you look at the percentages in monmouth county. that is where you want to be. you could even argue ocean county, monmouth county, they over perform in these republican areas of the state. we will see if he can turn the track ultimately. spirit amazing, just amazing. i'll pick up the calculator, but new jersey we just use her finger. i don't know what it is. alexis, this count could go on for a while here and there is no automatic recount role in new jersey, whoever's on the shorter end of that stick is a m

murphy for his part what did he do? he pushed his progressive accomplishments that he was able to do during his time here, basically raising the minimum wage, raising taxes on the wealthy and expanding paid family leave. so these were some of the things that he was able to do. another point that murphy made, he did all that he could to to tie ciattareli to trump. he did all he could to tie him to trump. it seemed to work in some ways. i spoke to a voter this morning. she used to be an independent. she said during this race and after donald trump she basically decided she was going to switch and become a democrat. i want you to listen to what mattered most to her. >> the argument about critical race theory taught in schools angered me. critical race theory is not being taught in schools. the republicans are so good at coming up with inflammatory phrases and pounding away at them, whether they have a basis, in fact, or not. i think the democrats need to find a better way to counteract those, j you the phrases. >> reporter

in murphy getting about 46% in run, an enormous democratic turnout drop off.one of the big stories here. >> i think democratic dropoff, republican enthusiasm, because some of these areas, i mean like ocean county here, you have sky-high enthusiasm here, it's not just the ciattarelli got 68% of the vote here, the wrong number of votes that ciattarelli got out here, chris christie won this county it's one of the reasons chris county get erected governor back in 2002, he got more votes in this county, than chris christie, did we saw this coming last night instead of holy cow. he might have a chance statewide. so republicans, and especially i think you seen an osha county in these other counties in south jersey, that enthusiasm, in that turnout, was so high for republicans in fact, that the state senate president, here a democrat, looks like he's going to go down to defeat, losing to a republican candidate who spent a grand total of $161 on his campaign, because of that republican tie, in some of these areas. >> steve kornacki at the big board, thank you so much.

murphy up.democrats. the murphy campaign said, let's wait. let's cut more votes. you are looking up here, the largest county in the state. 13% of the vote in. and you are in the lead right now in a county that four years ago went for the incumbent governor at almost 57%. 57% if you round it up. again, we're only at 13% of the vote. so we have to watch. but if you are the republicans, this is the most populus county in the state. at the moment, you are leading. if you can hold that lead, you run up more votes. we're talking about what is the message of these off year elec elections. if you are republicaning in the republican campaign, the republican candidate won this county four years ago. that's what you had to do. he's winning there. the challenge for the republicans is most of the vote is in for these counties. down here, atlanta county, which is atlanta city that the republican is ahead is a big deal. this was a county that went for the democrats four years ago by 13 point margin, just shy o

he is democratic incumbent, phil murphy.lenger, jack ciattarelli. joining us now, cnn political director david chalian. david, no one really thought this race was going to be this close. >> yeah. no. i spoke to a republican operative last week and they said, hey, it may be a shocker at some sort of high single digits. but you are looking at a one-point race right here. now, i will note this murphy lead, anderson, could grow. a lot of the outstanding vote -- i think we have 87% of the estimated vote in. that remaining 13% or so of the vote -- there are a lot of democratic-heavy areas. so that could pad. he may end up being in the mid-single digits but this was a state joe biden won by 16 percentage points just one year ago. so, the fact that this the race is this close speaks to this national-political environment that we have been talking about, which is where the president's low approval numbers, the inaction in congress, and the democrats sort of uncertain about how best to appeal to voters on their agenda right now. equal

phil murphy ahead by 35,000 votes.n the counties that still have substantial vote left to count, phil murphy is winning by a lot. i'm talking about hudson county where jersey city is. he has 73% of the vote there. 81% in there. he should be able to stretch his lead there. and essex, again, phil murphy 73%. just 84% counted at this point. so murphy should be able to stretch out as the county continues. a bigger question for democrats at this point is, yeah, winning is good but it was nerve-racking, much more nerve-racking than they were hoping. i pointed out phil murphy ahead by 35,000 votes at this point. what did joe biden do in 2020, just one year ago? he won by 700,000 votes. there's a big difference between 725,000 and 35,000, brianna. i want to show you also if i can the counties that joe biden won and the difference with phil murphy. here are the counties that biden won that murphy did not. you're seeing morris county there. jack chiattarelli won it by 14, biden won by 4. that's a 14-point swing. chiattarelli won

murphy doing all he can to tie chitareli to trump. the biggest issue, who is showing up and what numbers. if there's an upset pulled off, a lot of states look for it to be a bellwether of the next elections. >> thank you so much from bridgewater. ashley koenig, director for eagleton center for public polling at rutgers university. thanks for being with us. start with numbers that jason laid up with 1 million registered voter advantage for democrats. for a republican to win, they have to energize the republicans, sway the independents, and has to be depressed democratic turnout. is there any indication thus far even anecdotally that that is happening? >> in the early voting, we see high number is for democrats, outnumbering, a third already voted among all voters as those that voted in 2017. chitareli can't win on the party alone. that's how republicans won in the past, playing that middle of the road moderate republicanism card. >> it sounds like voters in new jersey are motivated differently than voters we heard from in virginia, so

were people voting against murphy.s is a high tax state with people saying they don't want their taxes raised. we've seen more and more people from new jersey leave the state because of the high taxes. >> hey, stephanie, i think it was a combination of both things or a couple of things by talking to people here. the people of new jersey have a voice as you well know, this is your home state. what ciattarelli did is he listened to and made their voice his message. that is what you are talking about, the frustration with the economy, the high taxes, the highest property tax of any state in the country, and there was anger in this state over the handling of covid, the vaccination mandates and the masking. much of what people were saying is hurting small businesses. it kept their kids out of school for far too long. that became his message what people were saying. listen to what his message was to people in the early hours of the morning as the vote was coming in and it was razor thin. >> we have sent a message to the enti

in new governor murphy - >> - >> the incumbent obviously. i don't know. i was surprised when i heard terry mcauliffe was going to win. the number one reason somebody votes for an individual's name recognition, doesn't matter if you are democrat or republican. that is why celebrities like donald trump or ronald reagan can toss their name into the ring and do well. larry elder for example. leaning among a field of 50 people, trying to run against gavin newsom if the recall was successful in his name rose to the top because people knew who he was. name recognition people knew who he was and very different from the candidate republicans are putting forth. and very different in the sense of he is just like donald trump was not an establishment guy, after four years of that the country was like i guess we do want and establishment guy and went back to a very establishment guy, and joe biden and democrats were looking at the success they had in the general election after trump, even though it was ralph northrom, started out to be trump and non-trump until youngk

you see phil murphy there.es apart for these men. 99% of the precincts were in a moment ago. i don't know if that's the latest board. it said 99. regardless you've heard me mention about a recount. when it gets quite this close you will see a situation where people will look to see will they bring in lawyers and those conversations happen. they don't happen automatically in new jersey by any sort of rule or law. there is no automatic recount legislation in our state. i live in jersey. what that means is either one of the candidates, no matter what the percentages, can press for a recount and so can private citizens based on whatever they would see as something not fair. just wanted to let you know we're watching to see if they call this race and when it happens we'll bring it to you live. now let's dig in a little bit deeper with some of the issues that were behind glenn youngkin's stunning victory in virginia. the big ones were the economy followed by coronavirus and education. 71% of voters who say education

you see how murphy is doing. there's a couple dozen precincts that are still to report in essex county. murphy could get thousands of votes. we could be talking 20,000 or more votes left in essex county. we could be talking down here in mercer when i say vote by mail is still to come, that's probably about 28,000 votes right there. murphy would be expected to win those with 80 % plus of the vote. the same-day vote, maybe another 15,000 of that left. when you're looking at murphy with the 7,000 vote lead statewide, and he can add in vote by mail in mercer county and what is still to come in places like essex county and also expecting camden county, another core democratic county. you can look at this map and you can find some pockets of deep democratic support where there are still different 10,000, 20,000 votes here or there to come in. there's all sorts of opportunity for murphy to pad the lead. when you look for where could ciattarelli combat that, we don't see that right now. this has been democrats and republ

four years ago, murphy was just shy, so murphy increased his vote totaled by about 2,503,000. in this county alone. that was the republican four years ago, and this year ciattarelli increased his buy votes in one county that he really need to get the performance out and he did it. >> what are we waiting on? why can't we make a call here? what's the 15,000 votes separation? we believe new york city is a pure peer, philadelphia across the river here. we believe 16 percent roughly o the vote is still outstanding. that might be, in a democratic county, that might be in favor of murphy, we will see when tha comes in and whether or not tha projection holds up. this is essex county. three out of 21, heavily democratic. murphy at almost 73 percent. in newark, new jersey. essex about 25 percent of the vote still outstanding in that county. this is union county. a lot of great neighborhoods there. right now, union has 12 percent of the vote outstanding. i just leave you with this, i don't know what they're doing, but there is nothing rolling in right now and that is why we ar kind of st

murphy at 57%. just 61% of the vote counted there. democrats hope it gives murphy the edge. now, you are looking at this map -- actually, look at camden. you have philadelphia suburbs. camden, just 78%. democrats hope it gives murphy the edge. you do see one republican county. let's take a look at that. that is cumberland where jack chet relly is. not that high. they have more opportunities to add votes from their counties than it seems republicans do at this point. i want to take a look now at new jersey. there is a really interesting story to be told there. glenn youngkin right now, cnn projected he will be the next governor leading by 2.1% right now. a lot has been made about the suburbs. you have the surrounding washington, d.c. area. fairfax, loudon county, and richmond, virginia. a lot has been made, and i will show you right now. glenn youngkin, in loudon county, he managed to lose by only 11%. that doesn't sound great. but joe biden won by more than 20% just one year ago. one thing i want to point out. while glenn youngkin did well, if you want to know where youngkin

at this hour, phil murphy, again, is projected to keep his job.e percentage point. joining us now is the great steve kornacki, msnbc national political correspondent. he has basically been at the studio since yesterday, waiting on the results. steve, your voice has dropped an octave, i hope you're close to the end. >> we got the call in virginia sometime last night, now we have new jersey, so there you go. >> tell me what you think people should understand about why it took more than 24 hours to make this call. was this a slow count or was the reason this took so long just because it ended up being so close in the end? >> a couple of things. obviously the fact that it was this close, this surprisingly close, we say joe biden won this state by 16 points. not many republicans this century have even made it close in a statewide race in new jersey. they had chris christie win a couple of governor's races, not much else for republicans to brag about. i think a couple of things happened. number one, there's mechanical thing here why new jersey doesn't a

murphy had $18 million come in from outside the state that he spent. ciattarelli spent less than $3 million. you add these up here and you see the difference. what did you get? you are at 38 million dollars for murphy and $17 million for ciattarelli. that's 2-1. does that sound like a bargain to you? . it's holding up. some counties are blue. we expect to see a lot of vote come in to favor murphy. hang on. we don't know that yet. we will let you when we do. this is a county. steve swinney is the democrat senate president. has the job 30 years. he is trailing his republican challenger by 2,000 votes. edward who describes himself as a conservative truck driver. how much money did he spen on his campaign? >> martha: $153. >> bill: bingo! it likes like sweeney because he is from this county, if you look at just like this from ciattarelli and murphy. go back 4 years ago. look at the same raw votes. murphy barely increased the turnout and ciattarelli really did better. he was up 19,000 raw votes. that's why sweeney is in trouble. something to watch there. >>

but ciattarelli and that face against phil murphy in new jersey was a sleeper. if you look at the numbers in new jersey, there are a million more registered democrats than a republicans in new jersey, it's been a reliably blue state especially in off elections for

we can see that murphy has pulled ahead, 86% reporting. there's still probably some room for that movement. that's one of the reasons murphy's people feel like they still have a shot. but keep in mind that murphy, just four years ago, was crushing it in bergen compared to where he is. and just to remind people that new jersey is not always predictably democrat, eight years ago, chris christie was doing even better with 60%. his re-election was a walk in the park compared to what murphy is facing tonight. so this is a tale of the tape. the issue is where the votes are still out tend to be these more urban counties. and that's where you will see this margin tighten up and democrats think they can make the grade. but this is a very different map than it looked like just four years ago. that's a warning side to murphy and to democrats nationally. >> let's go to virginia. glenn youngkin -- okay. not really a race alert. let's go back to new jersey and look at the numbers. this is just in. you've got to be kidding me. what is that, about 500 vot
