murthy, let me ask you one last question. it's not about vaccines but it is about covid and it's something we actually talked and a lot here on the show. and that's the issue of treatment. therapeutics for people who do get infected with covid. there are antibody treatments that if people can take them, get an infusion of the treatments before they need to be hospitalized, they have shown incredible effectiveness keeping people out of the hospital. we have seen an interesting development, it appears as michigan is having a very difficult surge in cases and hospitalizations, the administration, the federal government is not surging vaccine if michigan, but is trying to surge antibody treatment to michigan, basically to make it more available and more easily accessible there, so people who get infected can get an infusion and stay out of the hospital. is that right? is that what is happening? there isn't a lot of attention to this. even though it's fascinated by part of the pandemic. if that is happening in michigan, should we

vivek murthy.r coming to "the sunday show." >> it's so good to see you. >> great to see you, too. so for folks out there who are wondering, now that the j&j vaccine is being administered again, is it safe? >> well, i am so glad you asked. we just completed a thorough investigation of the johnson & johnson vaccine because of the six cases that were identified 11 days ago of a rare but serious type of blood clot. and what the investigation demonstrated was in fact, these rare blood clots are indeed rare. they were 15 total cases found out of more than 8 million people who received the vaccine, which is why all members of the advisory council on immunization practices were in favor of bringing the vaccine back online, of unpausing it. and what remains true today then is that the risks of the vaccine are very, very low compared to the benefits which are very, very high. that's why we now are fortunate to have three vaccines available here in the united states once again. the johnson & johnson, pfizer a

murthy, good to see you. i am curious how fbig a surpris was this? fall of last year, the johnson & johnson trial was paused at that point. it was described as an unexplained ill and we learned that it was a 25-year-old man who had a blood clot in one of the blood vessels in his brain. was there concern going back then? how big a surprise was this? >> well, it's a good question, sanjay. certainly, you know, we did not expect that this would, you know, happen, but we were prepared for it. and that's why the data was being collected and reviewed very carefully. also it hnot escaped our attention that the astrazeneca vaccine has encountered similar challenges with patients having had severe blood clots that caused people to also investigate what was happening there. so what i would say is that from the clinical trial data, sanjay, you know, the upshot of all of that, the analysis was that the safety profile was strong and that the effectiveness was also strong and, but as you know also, these trials are done with large numbers of people, 40,000 plus. on
