first let's get to cnn's chad myers. chad, it looks like winter has already arrived in western pennsylvania and it did it early. >> reporter: it really surprised a lot of people. and it even surprised me because on wednesday, this really wasn't forecast to be a one-foot snow event. then it surprised me today when i went to the rental counter at the airport and said, i need a four-wheel drive. and he said, why? now we're in this position where snow's coming down. a couple of trees on some lines. i don't think they're power lines, more like cable lines or telephone wires. now that it's starting to get dark, things are starting to get colder. this coldness will begin to freeze all this muck on the roadway. there's stuff on the side of the roadways. this stuff here, it's just hard -- it's got salt and grime and stuff in it. that's going to freeze and this road will become one big ice chunk. we're seeing accidents all across the roads and highways in york county and even up into harrisburg. the power line people say, as soon

the story from our senior investigative correspondent lisa myers. >> reporter: 13-year-old joey norris has been battling leukemia for three years was back today for more chemotherapy. his mom margaret says a critical shortage of drugs to fight this disease frightens her. >> to find out you may not have access to the drug you're looking for that you have to have is terrifying. >> reporter: so far joey has gotten what she needs. she says other moms had to drive hours to find drugs for their children. dr. jeffrey dome said the unprecedented shortage threatens to roll back years of progress in increasing survival rates. >> children's lives could be lost if they don't have the drugs available to treat their cancer. >> reporter: it's that serious? >> yes. >> reporter: doctors at other hospitals say they have had to delay or reorder treatments. now a congressional staff investigation has found that some companies acting as middlemen are actually making the shortage worse, buying drugs for everything from cancer to infections, then selling them for astronomical prices. >> exacerbating the shor

our chad myers is back in york, pennsylvania, good morning.bit better than it was an hour ago, is it? >> reporter: it's still cold and things certainly aren't melting. now i know how they do the moonwalk on the tv shows, the "dancing with the stars." if you ice it down, you can't move it all. it's really hard to break this ice on the ground. that's exactly what you're going to see if you want to look at that car back there, that's been encased. hard to walk here. encased in ice all night. if you're going to have -- try to get out, it may take you a good half-hour just to clear your car off. that's how rough it's been all night. we still have a bunch of people here without power. and a lot of people were spending the night at our hotel because they didn't want their kids sleeping in a cold house. that's probably the biggest rub -- not so much that it's dark, that it's cold. the furnaces won't run because the power is not there to use the blower, even if the gas is running, the blower won't push the heat back into your house. not only two millio

chad myers thanks so much from york pennsylvania. jacqui jeras here in the "weather center". it's not just york, pennsylvania. that swath behind you is huge. it encompass as good part of the northeast. >> the i here up in elevation the higher your snow totals will be. it's a tricky forecast. as well as that fine line between the rain and the snow, really the iran 95 corridor is kind of that zone where we're seeing most of that transition so the big cities will get some snow but not going to be foot of snow you'll get into some of the higher elevations. our storm system is intensifying and we're seeing those snow totals increase and winds are beginning to pick up. new york city, for example, we're looking at sustained winds around 20 miles per hour. you've already got 1.3 inches of snow on the ground in central park. that's a record four. you never had that much snow ever in the month of october. 1.3 you may say that's a walk in the park so to speak but that's a record breaking snow. it's a rare event to see something like that happen this early in the game. let's talk about h
