let's talk to chad myers in atlanta. buffalo, so what is the situation there? >> more snow on the way. without a doubt, 20 to 30 more inches on top of maybe that lady's home right there. >> 20 to 30 more? >> absolutely, before it finally stops. now it could be a little farther to the south where there is only 44 inches, but if it is on top of where she is she said 5.5 feet. six inches, that is what you need, that is how much snow is in cheektowaga right now. you melt it down, about five inches of water. that weighs 25 pounds, somewhere around that. so if you have a thousand-foot driveway, you have 20,000 pounds of snow to move just to get your driveway clear. 12.5 tons of snow just to get out. that is what it is like. buffalo was almost in the clear the entire day. here is buffalo, west seneca, blazedel, that is where the snow came down, it was a warm lake, a cold wind, and the cold wind brought the snow on shore into buffalo and is the niagra area here. the light snow, tomorrow, this lake wind event just like we had had the other day blows right along the lake

joining us are chad myers and brian todd. brian, i'm going to start with you. it navigating the wet stuff? you almost here? >> reporter: pamela, we're on i-95 near philadelphia heading north toward new york city. it's just a nasty day here along the 95 corridor. you've got rain to the east of the highway, know just to the west of the highway. the highway itself is the demarcation line between the rain systems and the snow systems. and it's just created some very nasty conditions here along the road. we can switch to our camera that looks out the front of the week here. and you can get an idea of the traffic patterns and everything. this is, as we have always talked about, the most heavily trafficked day of the year. at least along a lot of the major highways. 90% of the 50 million people who are going 50 miles or more away from home are going by car. and this system along the i-95 corridor is presenting some problems. we haven't heard reports of major accidents. that's good. seems like a lot of people have heeded the advice of traffic and police authorities to

meteorologist chad myers is joining us.is thundersnow and how long is this extreme weather going to last? >> it's going to last for a little while longer today, stop tomorrow and then restart on thursday with new lake-effect snow warnings already posted for thursday for the same area. could you imagine 48 inches of snow, 48 in elma but only 3 inches of snow at the buffalo airport. a 45-inch difference in a matter of three or four miles depending on where you are. what happens is the steam from the lake -- i know it's not hot but it's still much warmer than the air. the air is in the teens. the water's in the 40s. the steam comes up and wants to rise. the rise almost creates convection, creates a thunderstorm but it's so cold it doesn't rain. it just snows. those are the snow totals from the airport alone. my dad and i used to watch the planes take off when i was a kid and then down where i lived, 42 inches of snow just 3 miles away. there's lake effect along almost all of the lakes. not on this side but on the winward side,

our meteorologist chad myers is in atlanta. meteorologist jennifer gray is at new york's laguardia airport. and brian todd is traveling up i-95, one of the nation's busiest corridors from here in washington, d.c. up to new york city. he's now on the new jersey turnpike. brian, let's start with you. how's the weather affecting traffic on i-95? >> reporter: wolf, on the turnpike, we cannot say it's too bad right now because it's -- there are no major back-ups here on the turnpike, despite some pretty nasty weather. this i-95, the turnpike, this is the demarcation line. everything east of here is rain. west is snow. it's mostly rain on the turnpike. aaa says nearly 50 million americans are going to travel more than 50 miles from home on this thanksgiving holiday. 90% of them are going by car. we can see if we can show you out the front of our vehicle here and show you some of the rain we're up against. again, the traffic is moving pretty well. we talked to state officials in new jersey, delaware and maryland. they've told us they'

i'm going to bring in chad myers. he is watching this as well. chad, this is a very scary situation. i would say probably some good news here is weather conditions here in new york today. we haven't seen a lot of wind. certainly we don't really know why this even happened. >> we are looking at southwest winds at 7 miles an hour even at that height. that's how far they are from the top and how far they are from the bottom. right in the middle of the tower at this point even winds at that height would only be about 10 to 15 miles per hour. if this would be a gusty day, these guys would be in much more danger as the thing is swinging around. they don't put those baskets down on windy days. that's the other thing. something else i want to mention is how this basket is orientated. it's like this. it's on an angle rather than like this. this is how the attachment points happen. they don't attach on the end and the end because if one would break, the entire thing would fall straight down at almost a 9 90-degree angle. they attach at 30% here and 30% her
