chad myers is there for a sense of where this storm is. chad. >> it is right over to the south of you. this is where the storm is at this point. you are here, wilmington. you are getting the northern eye wall. as this system is sagging, you will get the southern eye wall. all right, we have a live shot down here in carolina beach. he will in fact get the calm in the storm, may see the sunshine through the clouds down there. notice the eye itself. you have to use your time lapse sense here. the eye is getting smaller, which means the winds are getting bigger and tighter. kind of like the ice skater analogy. if you bring your arms in a hurricane, you will get faster winds. that's exactly where we're going right now. here really what we have for the next few hours is this surge of water on up here toward the east and north of the eye. that's the biggest threat right now is the water coming on shore. here down where you are, it's the wrap-around rain from wilmington to the beach. that's where the eye made land fall 47 minutes ago. this is a fo

i want to check in with our chad myers.hout north carolina and south carolina. we are reporting this storm, but let's get an overview. chad, where is the storm now, what's it looking like? >> it's about 20 miles to the southwest of you, and it still looks very wet. there's still a lot of the storm that's over water, over the ocean. still picking up more humidity to dump on these already flooded areas. 14 rivers in major flood stage or higher. some even making a run at record. davis had a wind speed of 108. wilmington air park, not far from where you are, 105. that happened about three hours ago when the eye was on top of you. a couple things are still going on. the rain continues on up to the flooded areas around new bern. also here to the north, a couple purple squares. those purple squares are now tornado warnings. these are not ef-4s and 5s like we see in the plains in the spring, but like waterspouts that will come onshore and still could do damage because the winds could be like 120 or 130. and that's enough wind speed

i want to go to chad myers. i'm seeing the sun right now. i get the sense i shouldn't get used to it. >> not at all. the storm is not that far from you. the outer bands are on the way. those are the bands, and i'll show you here in a second, those are the bands that will bring in the first real batch of tropical storm force winds. they are already getting now to cape hatteras and all the way up there along the outer banks. everywhere from hatteras back down to morehead city, back out here, even toward the almost north top sail beach, that's where the first round of weather is happening now. we're still 150 miles, 129 now, from landfall. not that far from wilmington. these are live updates as the storm rolls this way. so what has happened overnight? well, the storm kind of got a stuffy nose. that's in a good way. it's not breathing as well as it was. so the pressures are coming up, which means the wind speeds are coming down. so now we're at a category-2, and it wouldn't surprise me if we were a category-one, but that category-one, those wind

chad myers in the severe weather center. he wants to wait until winds dip below 40 miles per hour to get people back online. how long will they have to wait for winds to die down and move on? this is moving at i call it lazy walker's pace, 2 miles per hour. >> right, exactly. it depends where you are in one of these bands. closer to the eye or center on land, it is a little less. every time you get a batch of rain off the ocean, that wind will pick up just like if you're in a category 2 hurricane, the outer bands feel more rain. it transitions wind from above to the surface because of rainfall itself and then winds blow. we could still be talking another ten hours before some of these crews get buckets in the air to try to get lines back up on those poles. so here's the radar now. myrtle beach and just west of you, that's where the center of the eye is. conway saw heavier rainfall earlier. still, this area through here is the fire hose of rain we haven't been able to get away from. it hasn't moved for 24 hours. we now know t

cnn meteorologist chad myers has been tracking this for us. what are you seeing, chad? this potential shift yesterday in the afternoon model runs. they kind of went up here and then they did this. it's like, okay, is that just a figu figment of its imagination or is it really going to happen? in the overnight runs, it's really going to happen. it's going to land in the north carolina-south carolina border and then it's going to lose all of its push. this 48-hour forecast right here is exactly the same as we had all week, but this part is not the same, this left-hand turn. that left-hand turn takes it from wilmington back toward myrtle and eventually to the possibility of charleston. notice -- notice -- where the cone has gone. the cone was here. and now the models are so inconsistent and now we get so many errors. this storm could be out here and could be getting stronger. right now we don't know that. there is a storm chaser in the storm right now to see what's going on. we'll get a brand new forecast in a few hours and we'll see what happens. >> we hope to get much mo

chad myers this morning.throughout "new day" with updates. >>> shelters are opening for those evacuating out of the hurricane's path. more than one million under mandatory evacuation orders. that does not mean they have to leave. it does mean if they stay, first responders will not be have to come to their aid. our martin savidge in choir linea beach where -- carolina beach where the mayor thinks as many as 100 may choose to ride out the storm. >> reporter: good morning. we really are now down to the final hours at least for many in beachside communities in north carolina. this is carolina beach where people are going to decide whether they're going to stay or go. 8:00 p.m. tonight is the cutoff point. after that, the decision is pretty much made for anyone who decides to stay behind. here's the reason why -- this is a barrier island. as a result, there's one bridge that connects to the mainland. once the wind speeds get to 145 consistently, that's when the bridge closes, and that's the final route of escape.

let's get right to cnn meteorologist chad myers, he's tracking the path for us. it's going to make landfall? >> moving now at 15 miles per hour and that's more than we've seen yesterday. we were somewhere around 9 or 10 miles per hour yesterday, getting over very warm water. we had what we think is an eyewall replacement cycle overnight. yesterday our big word was rapid intensification, this is a new one today. the inner eyewall has really fell apart, an outer eyewall tried to build and is trying right now and that will restrengthen the storm. i think the hurricane hunter aircraft is in there right now, not that long ago left charleston, it is flying through headed toward the eye right now. we tried to get a live shot from that airplane, but it is just so loud in the airplane that the pilot and the second pilot and the officer can't even hear us on the phone. so we will just let them fly the plane. here you go, from florence it will take its way a little bit farther to the north today. yesterday we were very close to a wilmington landfall in the middle but now it

. >> chad myers said it's not the wind he worries about. it's the water. let's talk about that storm surge. how far in are you seeing that it could hit? >> well, it is interesting because you look at history. 50% of fatalities in these tropical systems is the storm surge and another 25% is the inland rain. we have to have the conversation about the water. look at this. two to four feet. warnings up the coast. look at these values. 9 to 13 feet, 4 to 9 feet. these are staggering amounts. i do want to show you this graphic because it is important for people to realize that it is not just a coasting thing even with the storm surge because it is not just these barrier islands. these rivers, they normally flow out. but guess what? with a storm surge, that water reverses and flows inward. where it piles up is where you can get some of those values 9 to 13 feet. look at how far inland this goes. that's why we communicate the dangers of the water. >> is that like 100 miles inland from the coast? >> you could easily go 30, 40 miles inland with this. what happens is

. >>> first to chad myers in the cnn weather center. a cat 3 or cat 4, it's very serious. >> you bet it is. because of the bubble of water that will be under that storm when it makes landfall. we call it storm surge. it's what happened to katrina, even though katrina wasn't a cat 5 making landfall it was, hours before the landfall and that bubble of water under that category 5 hurricane was tremendous. ask the people in bay, st. louis, gulfport. that's the 20-foot storm surge that rolled right onshore because of how strong this storm was prior in its life. that's what we'll have right here. wednesday night, it's 150-mile-an-hour storm. the water is warm. there's not a lot of shear. we'll build this into a major hurricane. the computer models now trending slightly farther to the north than they were yesterday but still charleston, you are not out of the woods by any means because once it gets to land, it's actually going to stop. and when it stops, it will make tremendous amounts of rainfall, 20 to 30" of rain and with harvey we had 60"

let's bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers. he has the latest track and timing.at this hour? >> still headed to north carolina, but at the very last minute, before landfall, the models are now turning it to the left, closer to south carolina, at least right there at the border. it's a 130-mile-per-hour storm. this is still a monster big storm out there making big waves and a big surge. what hasn't changed? the first 48 hours. the same track we had yesterday somewhere to about midnight tomorrow night. then all of a sudden the storm track turns left. and even the hurricane center saying in their discussion they may have to turn it farther left than what they're seeing and showing right now, and then it gets into parts of georgia with very heavy rainfall there. that's what the models were showing yesterday, and they're still showing that today. coming in toward wilmington, here we are, very good, very normal. 40 hours of good wind pushing this along. but then all of a sudden the turn. there does it turn all wait the way t charleston, maybe just to myrtle? we don't k

cnn's chad myers is tracking all of this for us from the weather center. chad, the question obviously a lot of folks want to know is when could florence hit the u.s.? >> probably the first effect would be some time noon on thursday. maybe a little earlier, outer bands kind of coming in with lashing 75-mile-per-hour winds, but the problem is not really that we're 115 right now. it's the problem of what's going on from here. the water is getting warmer, erica. it's now 85 degrees under the storm. and it's forecast to be 145 and right behind here, 150-mile-per-hour storm. even if it loses some strength on the way into land, it's going to have this massive bubble of water called a storm surge. the same type of surge that we see in every landfalling major hurricane like katrina, like hugo, like all of the big storms that push water onshore. it could be 15 or 20 feet high as it comes onshore. then the storm is going to stop. and it's going to rain a little bit like harvey. hopefully not a lot like harvey but it's forecast to come onshore, stop, and put down some

let's go to chad myers with more. look, we now, chad, are really fully understanding the intensity of lawrence, but also a dramatic shift. where is it going? >> it did take a shift overnight, especially at the 5:00 p.m. advisory. all night the models were running and somewhere around midnight to 2:00 a.m. they finally finished. they take hours to run. there is so many models to just generate all this data. all of a sudden it gets spit out hour by hour and so the storm was forecast to go straight into wilmington and it still is forecast to do that for about 48 hours. but the planes have been flying through it. just got a 127 miles an hour wind gust right there. planes are flying through it, and it and putting more data into the weather models. now the model is starting at 2:00 this afternoon have hinted at a light left turn. after 2:00 a.m. and looking at those models, yeah, that left turn is pretty much confirmed. how much of a left turn, we don't know because here is the end of the cone. so at 48 hours, the cone is a

chad myers in the weather center, thank you so much. oak island, where i am right now, just one of many of these barrier islands where they have mandatory evacuation orders. let's go to carolina beach. miguel marquez is there. what are you seeing? >> very much the same thing. starting to feel the first winds. i want to show you the ocean. the waves are getting much bigger. this is high tide, about 5 feet high right now. you can see the dark clouds off in the distance as well. they're not expecting the real hurricane force winds, the 45-mile-per-hour winds or so until about 2:00 p.m. in about three hours here where that's when they will shut the bridge completely, and carolina beach will be on its own until this thing is over. 6200 people live here. most, most have evacuated. but some have decided to stay. the town manager here saying basically, you are on your own. they will have some security individuals here, but they will not be able to respond once that wind hits 45, 50 miles per hour or so. it's too dangerous for them to go out. so
