myers. the fire has stayed in the hills above the structured areas on the basin floor. you can see the perimeter is about a mile from lake tahoe airport right here. the outer edge of this fire right now is about three miles from heavenly. over the next 12 hours, the winds are going to push it away from heavenly, think fully, because you can see it is more of a northeasterly direction. an fires love to climb up hills and mountains. that is what we are seeing right now on this northeastern fringe of the caldor fire. once fires reach tops, they tend to slow down and speed and intensity. that's what we're seeing right now. it is hung up right here in this ridge top right now. where watching winds very close -- we are watching winds very closely. as they weaken tonight, we -- we are watching winds very closely. as they weaken tonight, that's not necessarily great news. the wind, 10-15 mph, the direction is going to change. the winds will shift from the northeast, more working toward the northwest

i am in a neighborhood on the south side of myers.o the flames were yesterday. one of the things i've noticed in neighborhoods like this. a lot of police officers patrolling to make sure no looting is going on. we talked to some in law enforcement who say in this street in particular iroquois on the southside of myers law enforcement spotted some spot fires that were happening from some of the embers that were being carried from the caldor fire. well, they notified cal fire and cal fire got some resources here pretty quickly and good thing, too, because some of these spot fires are less than a 100 feet away from some of the homes here and one of the things you'll notice with the spot fires and how they respond to that really quickly as they bring in the bulldozers the heavy equipment here. you can see some of the trails left behind by these bulldozers. these create space. so the fire can't creep along the ground. this is crucial to slowing the fire down especially around some of these neighborhoods in towns like myers. so the resident

and that's what happened in myers. you myers. the fire was still a few miles from myers. but some spot fires. we're we're we're starting in them flying again and they had properties there where you can see some burn marks on the properties. luckily the none of the houses burned you're talking to that for captain about the protection in that area. so far since this fire started back on august 14th. it's burned around 500 homes. but in the last 12 to 24 hours at least in that community, that area where they're getting a spot fires. the fire captain said they haven't lost any homes and is hoping after they went and did more evaluation in the area that that that would hold and they're hoping that holds tonight as well. as you heard him saying, but some caution in those words because of the winds. they just that they know they've got a battle ahead. yeah, let's hope those you know, working in their favor. chip yost are reporting for us. thank you. chip. we know you've been there all day long and into the night. >> appreciate all the work you're doing for us that ship will chec

live in myers, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. anchor: we hope that happens. air quality has been an issue clearly for the past several days. how the fire crews handling that? wayne: i think the fire crews are handling it fine. they are used to it. they have the apparatus in need if they are getting in the bad stuff. they seem to be doing ok. i was wearing a mask yesterday. it could indicate there more used to it than some of our roads. anchor: thank you, wayne. our team coverage continues with abc 7 news meteorologist drew tracking the conditions in tahoe. drew: watching two areas closely around kirkwood and in the hills above myers where wayne freedman was talking about. zooming in, there is the northeastern end of the fire, the perimeter outlined in red. the winds will push continually to the north and east. what we are watching, the winds will shift later on tonight the winds close to midnight, lighter but more of a southeasterly direction. that will try and push the fire closer down into the base end. news, calfire has been working this area extensively o

you're just mentioning myers being one of the threatened areas. they actually had some spot fires in myers because of the fire. the winds blowing those embers ford a little earlier we took a ride up highway 51 a little bit west. a couple miles west of myers. here's what it looked like there. >> on tuesday evening. the counter fire continued. it's moving east toward south lake tahoe. resort town that now sits empty, thanks to mandatory evacuation orders covid for. >> 2 summers. now is hurt businesses. and now to have the town completely shut down. it will hurt a lot of people. the fire's movement has been pushed by high winds and gusts expected to reach 40 miles per hour or more. those gusts have pushed flames up to 3 quarters of a mile ahead of the fire. >> creating new fires and hotspots to deal with this map from the national weather service shows the fires recent trajectory lake tahoe is on the top right of the map. the bright red marks show the hot spots created in the previous 24 hours. we asked a fire captain about what his comfort level was

right now i am actually in myers at one of the checkpoints. temperatures are cooler right now. the winds are fairy lights. that is good news for firefighters. i want to show you some of the flames burning last night's as the fire continued to move to the east, still threatening lake tahoe on the southern edge of the fire. alpine, douglas and amador county is also still at risk. at last check the fire is burned more than 200,000 acres. we will get numbers from cal fire coming up later, we take a live look at the camera on sierra-at-tahoe. the alert wildfire camera. the fire already burned through the area early monday morning. you can see the fire still burning in the distance. still threatening the area. in the meantime, it looks like the far western edge of the fire, the danger is lessening taking a look at the latest evacuation map there, the evacuations have been downgraded to a warning in pines and north coming out in el dorado county governor newsom visited some of the damage yesterday and talked about future plans to manage the california forest to reduce the fire risk. i

-- the flames are creeping up on myers come on that area. south lake tahoe is a ghost town. it is a ghost town. not on the california or nevada side of it. everyone's vacated. we did have to move some of our evacuees who were staying in hotels. a lot of it was because of resources, to support, they wouldn't be able to come up your to provide food and things they needed. we are setting a base. firefighters will be working here based out of heavenly, where i am now. we will be working with the firefighters out of placerville to combat this fire over the next couple of weeks. >> one strategy that we heard about was firefighters trying to redirect to the -- redirect the caldor fire, forcing it into an area where there is no field. is that working? >> i can't speak as to whether or not that is working. i'm not capable of speaking of the operational methods taking place. but one of the things you want to remove is the fuel the fire can actually consume. if that is what they are doing right now, then that is absolutely one of the tactics that would

they put out such a strong containment line just north of myers, they kept the flames out of myers today. keeping it away from south lake tahoe. i will have more in my forecast in our cooler bay area weather in about 18 minutes. >> thousands of people in south lake tahoe evacuated. one popular hotel asked evacuees to leave their rooms this morning. why? a hotel employee says the hotel is only taking in fire crews and emergency personnel. melissa colorado spoke to evacuees who say they have nowhere else to go. she joins us live from south lake tahoe with more. >> reporter: right, janelle, the hotel behind me caters to tourists until recently it was catered to evacuees who came here with all of their belongings and pets. this morning, evacuees told me they got a bit of surprising news, hotel employees telling them we need you to give up your room. we need you to give up your room because we need to provide these rooms for firefighters for emergency personnel. yet again these evacuees having no choice but to pack up their stuff and head further east. >> i understand first responders have to

this is myers. this is lower echo lake where the fire burned into yesterday and you see highway 89 right along here after echo summit. there's this big valley where it dips down that is that christmas valley and you can see all of these homes have been saved right along highway 89 the fire picks up on the other side of 89. yes, you have embers being blown more than a mile in some cases. and all of this has burned overnight. and today for perspective again here, south lake tahoe. here is the lake. it's all very close, maybe 3 miles or so from where the fire is here to the water of lake tahoe. the fire is growing but crews are saving homes. that is the story line tonight as we look some of the areas that are still under mandatory evacuation orders. this is the map from the eldorado county sheriff showing that expansive area basically, you know, a huge area of eldorado county. the red is an evacuation order. the yellow an evacuation warning. obviously southlake here. emerald a popular areas. it doesn't

those flames away from areas like myers in south lake tahoe. a southwesterly wind with the northerly wind. and it's a very, very calm wind at that. so overwhelmingly good conditions this morning. at least compared to where we had been. it's nice to share some good news with you up there and you know fire crews up there just nonstop trying to get things under control in these areas. as for our with gusts, even less impressive kirkwood, 4 mile per hour wind gust 7 miles per hour. at times, not looking at a windy morning in the least bit. now, as far as smoke goes, we have settled back with some haze out there for sure. it's not an overwhelmingly smoky forecast for us. obviously the worst impact of that is across the very northern tier. the state. but we will have a hazy weekend ahead. severe respiratory conditions. maybe not the best one for a long hike or something like that. limit outdoor exposure. if you know your sensitivities to that smoke. high pressure is building in. so it's about to get hotter. it's about to get easier. and that's ok, th

now, what does this mean for areas like myers in south lake tahoe. those areas, those communities that were so affected by the fire. well, this fire is going to start progressing and already burned areas as well as further south into areas that are less populated. so this is actually some good news up in air this morning around south lake tahoe, zooming out across the region. even your peak wind gusts have been really light. so all this is super goodness talk about nice to be talking about that up in the sierra the adverse effect of calmer some smoke has the opportunity to settle back in with us. and that certainly happened. we haven't seen a huge impact, though, in any sort of a really unhealthy fashion moderate air quality is what we've got today and a couple of poor pockets in there too. if it bothered you yesterday, probably going to be the case again today with these hazy skies. if you didn't notice it so much yesterday. you probably won't notice that today. the high pressure is setting up shop. that's going to result in warmer temperatures. som

the past few days which had been fanning those flames closer and closer to areas like myers in south lake wind out of the northeast is going to push a lot of those flakes closer to areas that are already burned and actually into areas that are less populated too, just calmer winds in general peak wind gust so far this morning in some of those upper elevations have really not been that substantial. as for air quality, it's not a deal here in the bay area. but it's not near as bad as the north coast nor the sierra side certainly recommend against travel in those areas. i'm sure you're already weren't planning it, though. high pressure. this ridge, retro grating back into the picture. this is going to weekend. any sort of sinking air. so we are going to see some haze sticking with us the next couple of days. and it is also going to result in a spike in temperatures that we're in for moderate air quality across the bay this morning. pretty familiar with that. that's exactly where we were yesterday. today's daytime highs 60's and 70's for sf 60's right along the coastline and then 70's an
