that is my brother, my sister, and me. we thought we were just as clever and smart and just as brave as the children in his story. he told stories vaguely familiar, but different some how because he told them his way. you see, i had no idea my grandfather was a functional illiterate and encouraged all 3 of us, his grandchildren to read. the way he encouraged me, he'd say y'all read to me what they taught you up at the schoolhouse today. i would whip out my dick and jane. see jane run. run, he endured that. he allowed me to read to him. i had no idea in other families the adults read to children. in my house, children read to the adults. imagine the confidence they gave me in my readings. i loved to read out loud. enjoyed it immensely. so i would read dick and jane all the way up to julius caesar. when i came to a word difficult, he would say work with it little sister. he wouldn't jump in and tell me. he would let me work it out so i did. i learned to jump into words. that built my confidence, grandmother and ggrandfather

pretty much 4 days a week my great uncle would come in and visit all of these people my uncle, my grand mother and so forth, all were from a town land called outside of robin. when i was growing up i would hear the names. and they would conjure the sense of another world i was no longer a part of but was connected to. i think the -- i came to the brink of this sort of, you know, really quest gradualy by hearing the names. the other experience i had when i was growing up is music in my grand mother's house. my grand mother live on the first floor of the apartment building the door was open. everyone in the apartment building stopped there after work. they would stop for a drink and play polka, not polka, poker. and lynched to john gibbons play an accordion on his wooden leg. you had the sense of people having come over if not in mass by a great number to this other place with a kind of echo of that place being transposed into the world that became my world. so that of my mother's side of the family. my father's side was more mysterious. over time i heard stories of lost aunts and saint j

i have followed my heart in many parts of my career.many people gave me the advice not to start my foundation at that early stage of my career. truth be told, i never lived and died inside the lines. i never really wanted it for most of my career. it came with a lot of tanks and pressure. the one thing i connect to is the ability to impact somebody. it was always my goal to get out there and find that extra bit, as scared and nervous as i was, as tired and injured as i was, to say maybe i can provide an escape to somebody else's life who came here today to watch me. again, but chose to look at the platform of shifting from tennis into my next career as a heck of an opportunity. i have been blessed enough to be able to do it. tavis: how do you become great at something that you don't love? >> i was really talented, but i did not become great at it, in my own mind, until i took ownership of it. when i walked away from the game at 27 years old, i give myself permission to quit. i had been depressed, dabbled in self destruction, drugs, crys

my mother was a home economics teacher, and my dad was a geologist.to the university of kentucky and got a master's, and met charlie snow. charlie snow was the head of the department; he was a forensic anthropologist. i was in the lab studying osteology...studying bones. and he came in one day and said, "i've got an id case this weekend, would you like to go?" i said, "yeah, sure, i've been reading about this..." so about six months before that, two trucks ran together one morning outside of frankfurt, kentucky. they burned, and when the fire was out there were three people in the two trucks instead of just the two drivers. well, who was this third individual? we went out and he was able to make a positive vivification of the woman. and it was, "aha! that's what i want to do!" it was like you see in the cartoons, where the light flashes... my health and energy has gotten a lot better. same for my wife. one thing i will say is i will just tell you this that i had a conversation with my wife recently, and she did not understand -- i do not know either -- why the plans are to destroy such beautiful, durable places like garden apartments. i will tell you that when we moved here, we sought and we still think this is a little slice of heaven, so i find myself distressed to hear about the project plans to demolish and garden apartments. as we live in 100 block of gonzales, if they go through, we will probably be one of the first ones to have to leave. that is my guess. i could be wrong. another thing i would like to bring to your attention -- a small matter, perhaps not germane to your decision, however, what is decided in this matter concerning division plan will be utilized in not only local law, but state and federal matters across the country to help decide similar issues. i think it has something to do with the good faith clause in the constitution. i'm not going to take any more time

in early 2007, my unit, my permit unit had bedbugs. i reported this to my manager on monday. they did not send a maintenance man into my unit until wednesday fifth if i did not get anyone from pest control until the following monday. if you do not know what it's like to be up at night with your lights on for, wondering if you are going to get ate up, living with hiv aids, this is dangerous. i called the department of public health. they referred me to dbi. i called them. they put me on hold and said they cannot do anything for me and to go back to dph. there's a mix of with the department. it's not the lack of funding. it is the department merry-go- round. come up with a solution to get off the department merry-go- round. maybe more tenants would not be eaten up by the bugs. with over 500 hotels in the city and more than 350 low-income housing buildings, two inspectors from each department is not going to cut it. i have to spend my own money to do my own laundry. management did not move me out of the unit. the problem is enforcement. someone needs to step up to the plate and
