the naacp is now accusing u.s. airways of racial profiling. anne makovec with more on the group's claims. >> a lot of people saying we are playing the race card. >> reporter: waving a newspaper article about a cross dresser, they are talking about racism by u.s. airways. >> you don't single people out. >> reporter: deshon marmon, a 20-year-old college football player, was arrested last week after boarding a u.s. airways flight from sfo to new mexico wearing saggy pants that exposed his underwear. a flight attendant asked him to pull them up. and when he refused, the pilot told him to get off the plane. in this cell phone video you can hear marmon's response. >> nothing to nobody. i paid my ticket i paid my fee. the lady i came with -- [ indiscernible ] >> listen to me. >> i addressed the problem with the lady. i told her when i sit down everything is going to be taken care of. i'm sitting down and everything is taken care of. i'm okay. >> reporter: after all of the other passengers on the plane had to exit, marmon finally did, too. the police

in the third vice president of the san francisco grand naacp. this is my neighborhood. i know where the mayor's office is because the naacp san francisco branch -- we have been there pleading our cases before him, and, supervisor avalos, thank you for all that you have done for this community. i have a business, a beauty salon in this area. i have been there 37 years. i have grandchildren. my grandson works with the inner city youth. i have a granddaughter that will start school here in the fall, but she is a student, along with my great-grandson, who is in preschool and going to kindergarten. so i have a lot invested in this community. so my plea to you is to keep the inner city youth funds coming so that we can keep the programs for our youth, give them the training they need so they can grow up to be good citizens, the mayor, the police officer, and take the seats of where you are sitting because they are our future. invest in our children. thank you. well, it turned out that during the 1970s, the local naacp in atlanta opposed school desegregation and for much the same reasons. they decided to settle the school desegregation case that was ongoing in atlanta in order to preserve the jobs of african-american school teachers and principals. they were concerned about employment discrimination. and also they were concerned that black students would not have a good environment in desegregated majority white schools. now, even as matthews challenged this perspective, prominent blacks in atlanta's community supported the settlement. this included dr. benjamin mays who had become the president of the board of education in 1969. it included maynard jackson who would become mayor of atlanta. andrew young supported the settlement. lots of african-american -- prominent african-american leaders. but this does not stop matthews and other women from the housing projects from pushing ahead. they challenge the sthment and they met the resistance of, say, lonnie king who was the head of the local naacp. he defended it with these words, among others.

he was rejected and the naacp said work with us. open up the first office of the naacp and the state of mississippi and he accepted i provided that i was his secretary. they agreed and we moved to jackson mississippi and a new life opened up to us.he but during that time when medgar fault so hostile to his own country, and when he fell to the only way we could possibly survive plus the eye for the eye or the tooth for the two is coming he and other strategically planned how they would manipulate and use what littlee t resources they had to protect his family and i am reminded now of this one piece of warfare that we had that was broken down into three parts. it was a machine gun. i i would ask him what goodw will that do if we need it? when one part of it is in the upper delta of clarksdale the other part isd in the lower part of thean delta and we have one part? how willt we ever bring those three pieces together forhi one piece of damage? he said don't worry about it. we have a plan. but over the years that is the plan that we hav

there is sort of two issues in terms of the naacp case.ne is trying to stop some of the closures of poor performing schools that the new york city department of education is moving forward with and then the second is to block some of the co-locations that will happen between charter schools, successful charter school and traditional public schools. i think this is a bit unfortunate and i'm very, very hopeful that the naacp will work with the department of education to try to come to some agreement on this because while, you know, there may be some issues about sharing of cafeteria and gym space, in a way that is equitable to both schools, i don't think that you want to be in a position where you've got 7,000 kids who have been accepted into these charter schools who potentially won't have anywhere to go in the fall. and so i'm really hoping that they can come to resolution on this quickly. >> michelle, what progress do you see right now, especially at a time of state and local budget cuts in terms of trying to achieve some of your goals of
