a report released today by the naacp and the naacp legal defense and education fund which are two separate organizations finds the laws tend to suppress minority voting. the new laws cited include voter requirements in certain states. laws restricting early voting days and prohibiting voting by those with felony convictions. joining me now is host of msnbc's politics nation, the reverend al sharpton. at the heart of this, the so-called voter i.d. laws. explain to all of us, i know they're trying to frame had in the fact that they're trying to avoid voter fraud in this country. what's the deeper look that we're supposed to be figuring out here? >> well, first of all, it's a solution looking for a problem rather than a problem looking for a solution. when you mentioned the right looking for voter fraud. when you look during the bush administration, in their own investigations, they couldn't come up with 70 cases of voter fraud nationwide. when you had millions upon millions of people in voting. so when you look at the fact that there is no pattern of voter fraud and you see the downside of d

i'm joined tonight by ben jealous, president and ceo of the naacp. texas who serves on the house judiciary committee. let's go to you first, congresswoman. what about the house judiciary committee, the justice department looking into first the constitutionality, the legality of this law that is taking place and disenfranchising so many people in michigan? where does this stand? >> well, first of all, i join my ranking member, my colleague, john conyers, representative from detroit, in asking the attorney general to question the constitutionality of this runaway law. under article 4, section 4, we are owed an obligation to have a democracy of which we can vote on our dually chosen candidates. but this is a runaway opportunity to diminish minority voting power in particular because of the predominance of this process on predominantly african-american communities including detroit. i agree with mayor bing that he can get this done. this is union busting, but it is more than that. it is job busting. i hope many of your viewers will realize that when you

. >>> naacp released a report. they will lead a march to u.n.states introduced legislation to keep millions of american citizens from casting ballots. barack obama was elected president in 2008 in no small part due to an expanded electorate with higher than usual turnout among young people and african-americans. in the 29 states that record party affiliations, ruffle two-thirds of voters registered as democrats and obama won nearly 70% of their votes. as a general rule in politics, the more voters vote the better for democrats. which is why we are seeing republican governors ond state houses moving to make voting for difficult. i know you have been working with the reverend al. my first question is, what is different about what's going on now than what's been going on for a long time in terms of attempting to restrict the franchise? what is it that there is a crisis that the naacp needs to address? >> there is more. it is more aggressive and more destructive to our democracy. 38 states have pushed laws to constrict access to the ballot in a sing

he had agreed to go make a speech at the naacp. in the course of the speech, there was a phrase of something like, you and your people. he used the phrase "you and your people." for what ever reason after it was over with, people interpret it to be racist that he was making some kind of racist statement. it really devastated him because he had this image of himself as a great humanitarian who was very tolerant -- racially tolerant and had no animosity or racial prejudices. he came off sounding like a racist. not long after that, he did get out. >> we will pick up the story. we've mentioned by summer he is at 39% in the polls. people working on ballot access had been successful and about half of the states. then july 16, 1992, an announcement from ross perot about his campaign. then just two and a half months later, a second announcement per ruble watch a little bit of both. >> we have set among ourselves publicly that we must win in november. we must win a majority of the electorial votes. if we cannot win in november, the election

role al sharpton had as one of those civil rights leaders, the role that he and others played, the naacp and other organizations, the approval to purchase nbc. you said back in the day, black folk did not use to do that. they used to complain. now, they're finding out a way to go after these civil-rights leaders, go after these organizations, and i am not going to say buy them off, but figure out to get their approval, so they can get approval for these mergers. this becomes a front-page story. he is going to work for the company potentially that he signed off on or supported publicly being able to purchase, msnbc. that became a national story. i come back to this because it was in the news prior to that and i am sure will be again in the future, but what has happened that has allowed a black and brown, all kinds of organizations -- i am not demonizing just black folk or black organizations -- but what has happened that allows them whose communities are not being well served by these networks to sign off on all of these mergers. >> is really frustrating, because given the role that the c

the vice president's office also knew the racial climate and that we survived in at the epa by the naacp. nothing happened as a result of that knowledge. tavis: the democrats in the clinton white house sometime wanted to keep this thing quiet or not given any attention to it. a republican member of congress ends up being your champion on this legislation. tell me more about that. >> the role he played was he was prepared to talk to us. to provide an entry into the political process. i have to give kudos to sheila jackson of texas. unless she had partnered with james, the law would have died. it was that partnership that allowed the bill to pass through congress unanimously on the house and senate side. this was the first time ever that a civil rights law had passed unanimously. tavis: what to do you make of the journey you had to make that locket signed into books? -- law signed into books? >> i endured a death threats. these were attacks against me and my family. it was not just me. the beauty of the story is that so many workers joined me in this incredible fights to pass the no fear a
