the naacp led, the local naacp led the campaign to get racial justice for the boilermakers. in fact, there were going to be at least three lawsuits that would eventually end discrimination by the boilermakers in portland and elsewhere. but let me suggest that the naacp's composition is changing, it's growing as an organization, and it's growing much more militant in terms of its willingness to challenge the status quo and particularly the people at the bottom are much more militant. but there's also a huge change at the top that's going to be crucial in the long run. between roughly 1938 and 1942 the naacp will secure a number of new attorneys. and these attorneys will be critical in terms of winning cases for the organization. i'm going focus on three of them. the three that are on the screen here. and in some ways these attorneys were the people who were going to help to create the style of the naacp, the legal style of the naacp, not just in the 1940s, but well beyond that. let me talk about each of them briefly. charles houston. i don't know how many of you are familiar

again, this was a slap at the naacp and sclc. one of the things that would happen often is that sclc -- and maybe i should talk about sclc. southern christian leadership conference. this essentially was the organization of martin luther king. after martin luther king led the successful boycott in montgomery, some people suggested that he ought to have an organization, that there ought to be an organization that forms around him. and essentially, this is a southern christian leadership conference became his organization. he was the head of it for most of the -- well, all of his life. and people gravitated toward it. mostly ministers gravitated toward it because of their respect for king. but sclc had a particular idea about the civil rights movement. they -- as i said before, they had this idea they were going to completely transform american society, and sncc didn't buy it. sncc didn't buy into that, and one of the things that sncc was critical of was sclc would come in, organize public demonstrations and then almost immediately

so it was really a pretty phenomenal victory done in the face of the opposition of the national naacp board didn't actually record the sudan that it taken place because they were not happy that this had been done. the sedans were one part of the civil rights movement in wichita and they -- the victory was very significant. it was the first student led successful student led sudan. they went through five years of this and the adults in the end naacp organized, don't buy, we can't work, campaigns they would distribute flyers. i have flyers of the stores in town that would be open to hiring you or some of the wives of some of the doctors in the community. this is incredibly wonderful strategy. they realize that the doctors were only allowing black patients to have appointments on thursdays, so they would refuse and they just, okay if you want a business then you have to take us other times of the week. some of the stores, clothing stores fashionable clothing stores in town and would not allow you to crop -- try on clothes if you went and so a number of doctors wives organized and ran up
