from the very beginning of the naacp in 1909 lynching and mob violence at the top of the naacp agenda. racist violence was considered to be the greatest obstacle they faced in the north and south. in 1916, it was said the naacp advancement wasn't radical enough and didn't address labor or housing or other things. one of the naacp explains was all of the american negro wanted was a chance to live without a lynch around his neck. they felt it was necessary to focus on ending lynching so african-americans could enjoy the benefits of their struggle. so what you see the board image prom 1911 which is the first year the naacp kept minutes every month. up until 1923, the year that dempsey was decided and the purpose was to compare the frequency that we very much associate with civil rights which is education, labor and voting with issues to criminal justice. so i coded for a number of different words that were related to criminal justice and lynching and racist violence and in education, labor and voting. what i found was really interesting to me in trying to assess watt the naacp actually c

and they didn't just send it to members of the naacp. they sent it to every member of woodrow wilson plus cabinet -- woodrow wilson plus cabinet, to newspaper editors all over the country, and then elizabeth went on a speaking tour, mostly to black churches around the country. i do not think she came back to texas. it would have been unwise. interestingly enough, the whole story blew up and was featured in the newspaper in waco twice while i was doing my research before my book ever came out. and i have to give waco credit for this. unlike many, many other communities that have never confronted or dealt with or acknowledged their horrible racial past, the waco city council and the county commissioners did issue some sort of resolution of regret, if not apology, and a group of citizens from all walks of life came and stood on the steps of the courthouse on the 90th anniversary of the lynching and read a resolution of apology. i feel very strongly that you can't understand the present if you don't know what happened in the past, and these

board case where he was the star witness for the naacp and for thurgood marshall. so what clark did was he went into segregated public schools and he did a test on children where his two instruments were dolls, a white doll and a brown doll. >> host: public schools in the south and integrated schools in the north. >> guest: the interesting thing is that my book brings out is this precursor story in the north where clark began his test and springfield in 1939 and the idea was to pick springfield because it was supposed to be the model of the integrated school system. it was the home of the springfield plan which was the program i was describing. clark chose springfield as his northern testing ground to contrast with the segregated south. he would later talk about on the brown versus board witness stand that these tests in the north and the results of the tests were that he would ask black children about the dolls and he would say give me the doll that looks like you. give me the doll that looks pretty. give me the doll that you want to be friends with or things alon

he is creating chapters of the naacp. he is getting lawyers involved in civil rights.you can't do that if you are a pessimistic person. what he would do is his optimist was infectious. his diplomacy was another tool that he would use. and you can't use the kind of diplomacy that he was so effective in using if people feel as you approach them that you have a chip on your shoulder. there's a difference between that and i've got a mission, i've got something i'm going to do. the thurgood marshall that i have examined for a long time was a fairly optimistic person, a quite optimistic person. and i still don't fully understand how is it that most of the photography of him, he is frowning. i mean, this was a man who -- if he came in, you would know he is in the room. he had a loud voice. he was loud. i mean, literally, i think it came from some of his father but also from that debating experience. you knew when he was in the room. he is probably cracking a joke. he is flirting with the women. and he is trying to find out where are we going afterwards to get a drink. >> we'r

the case was called barksdale versus springfield school community and this was where the naacp under the leadership of robert carter and lewis steele filed the suit against springfield schools and said your schools are segregated, just as segregated as any others and it doesn't matter that you have this plan to eradicate racism and it doesn't doesn't matter to you in a forward-thinking people. or schools are still segregated and you got to do something about it. >> host: your focuses on progressive senate talks about the differences in attitudes of the liberals who really had good intentions versus the south that believe segregation was the way and that was the way of life, leave us alone and you quote very famous figures, famous to people who know history live history. he talked about james baldwin. i've been heard james baldwin's name for many years. he and other liberals, he was black but he said the north was no different from the south except in attitude and frederi frederick. i know lots of liberals is to say the north is upsell for example. your book talks about that and demon

we're back with cornell william brooks, the president and ceo of the naacp. once again, cornell, thanks very much for joining us. people focus in on most of the protests -- there are tens of thousands. honorable, decent. but there were some who were ugly and terrible. we heard this in new york the other day. i'll play some clips because it's disgusting but presumably it gets picked up. listen to. >> what do we want? dead cops! when do we want it? now. >> you see a crowd going down a major street in street, what do you want, dead cops, when do you want it, now. they keep going on and on and on. how does that happen? >> it's misdirected anger. the fact of the matter is people are expressing their anger in ways that are not only unconstructive but socially suicidal. when you attack police officers broadly, these are the protect charged with the responsibility of protecting you, protecting us. that does not help. in ferguson, within days of michael brown being killed, the naacp marched with law enforcement and young people, grade schoolers. we did that because we

field secretary for the naacp. his work has been continued by his widow. also the year of the march on washington. it is important to remember, the very first words martin luther king speaks, now is the time to make real the promise of democracy. november 22, 1963, the assassination of john f. kennedy, and it is going to send shockwaves throughout the country. but it provides a context for comprehensive civil rights legislation. the year of freedom summer, the 50th anniversary of the summer project which is an experiment in interracial democracy and mississippi, something that stokely carmichael contributed to. mostly remembered for the tragic murders of three civil rights workers who were killed right outside of philadelphia, mississippi. the year of the voting rights act. in alabama, nonviolent demonstrators were routed by alabama state troopers. that violence known as bloody sunday, inspires wind and johnson in a joint address to congress to say that civil rights is a national priority, voting rights is a national priority, and it is called a turning.in

book what the naacp said to dr. king. the other black nobel peace prize laureate the naacp wrote and passed a resolution to condemn dr. king. when ralph bunch saw the language it wasn't tough enough for him and he spiced it up even more. ralph bunch personally spiced up the language to condemn the other laureate nobel peace prize winner martin king. where wilkins the naacp and the other black nobel peace prizewinner turns on them. they went in publicly and dr. king. adam clayton powell jr. love their brother but where martin was concerned a straight hater. he was hating on dr. king. it was one of the most difficult passages to write. even though adam clayton powell has been hating on dr. king publicly. they're all kinds of examples where folks were hating on him and he loved them as hard as he could. he invites martin to dinner one night at his home and martin went anyway. that's like daniel walking into the lion's den on purpose. he knew where he was going but he invited him so he went anyway. when you read the pas

joining us now is the president of the naacp, and it organized the jury for justice. i know it has been an exhausting experience. >> yes, but it's good to be with you. >> those are very ugly pictures out of rosebud. how do you contextulize that? >> yeah, it was a gauntlet of stereotypes, but the majority people we met were kind and gracious, and 1% of the people we met were racist and mean-spirited, but the other 99% were kind and gracious, while in rosebud we met people who i believe were more fearful than hateful in the sense that they were vibing a toxic brew of fear, and they displayed a side of america is that rare but has to be dealt with. i saw parents using racial ep thets in front of children, and those were falling upon the cheers walking with us, so we had this wonderful rainbow hue band of marchers who marched for miles and miles taking off time from their work only to meet people who said to them and called them the "n" word over and over again, and "n" lovers. this was a disturbing experience, but it's a testimony to the determination of not only the mar

we'll turn now to the president of the naacp cornell william brooks. mr. brooks, you just heard the commissioner here, are they doing enough? >> in one answer, no. we're looking at the tragedy of eric garner as a single incident. it's not enough. to talk about training retrospectively as opposed -- as to holding people accountable retrospectively that's where we have to go. yes, body cameras. look at training. we have to look at fundamentally changing the culture of policing in new york city and across the country. we have to change the model of policing. in other words, we are -- we have police serving the role as occupying army as opposed to using a community policing model, that's where we have to go. unless we're talking in terms of global, comprehensive reform it's not enough. we have across this country generation of young people who simply seeing that we believe based on imperical evidence, pandemic of police miss conduct. we are not a nation who put our heads in the sand. we have citizens who are rising up and saying, now is the time. >> schieffer:

while south carolina is probably celebrating the naacp is not. in fact, the organization that prize itself on celebrating the accomplishments of african-americans hasn't said a peep. senator tim scott said that could be the problem although he's not offended one way or another. senator, first off, congratulations. what an honor. i knew you would win. what do you think of that? i hate to have you feel slighted on a big day but it's the naacp ignoring what has to be one of the greatest moments for african-americans this year. >> well, i'll tell you, no slight to be honest with you. ultimately i'm thankful for those who know who i am, who celebrate the success of me and my family, particularly my grandfather and mother who paid a high price to make sure i had an opportunity to succeed. the fact that the naacp does not weigh in in a positive position is my experience in the last four years. >> they were doing their darnest to make sure you wouldn't get elected. that is then this is now. you're obviously a gentleman. no grudge now. >> not at all. >> i

joining me now is the former executive director of the naacp and the current president of the nationalonal newspaper publishers association. >> great, glad you are here. we have seen almost daily, the protests against police and african-americans and at what point do you see the protests going beyond moments caught by the cameras, and crowds assembli assembling, and they become a movement. >> these moments of protests are becoming a movement of protests, and the movement now has to move to social change, and that is why today in washington the focus of the march will be the congress of the united states, getting legislative remedies for police brutality and police misconduct, and the hash tag #blacklivesmatter, there's no justice, no equal justice, and therefore i think that these marches are coming together, not as isolated protests. there was another killing right in phoenix, arizona, earlier this week, and another battle in the phoenix police department. it's a national problem. it's not a ferguson problem, but a national problem and that's why i think we need national social change
