the houston naacp is one of the outstanding branches of the naacp in this country. naacp has branches in all 50 states. continuing, the naacp's national headquarters, located in baltimore, maryland, naacp was founded to ensure the political education -- political, educational, social and economic rights of all persons, and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. proud to say that the naacp has always used the tactics of nonviolence in its movement forward. in its effort to help all persons benefit in this country. because, quite frankly, everyone has benefited from the naacp and its movement in this country. it has used negotiation, litigation and protestation as its tactics. e naacp was there to win lawsuits before the supreme court was there to protest, so persons might acquire not only the right to vote, but also the opportunity to elect people of their choice. with acp has been there the great litigater, thurgood marshall. thurgood marshall, who was the first african-american justice on the supreme court, was the chief litigater for the naacp for m

and that did an enormous amount for the naacp.this star lawyer who was legenday for his courage. it took the organization to a different level. marshall really made the second coming in the naacp from the mid-40s on. narrator: as the cause moved forward through the 1940s, the u.s. entered world war two. marshall was now faced with one more distraction from the education strategy, as he was forced to defend black soldiers who were victims of discrimination in the segregated services. roger wilkins: i think the war really changed things, because these guys came back and some were dead and some didn't have arms or legs or whatever. and they were fighting for freedom in the usa and the american way. they were fairly young men and they had lives to live, and, you know, and they would stand up for themselves in ways that black people earlier had not done. jose anderson: they had been to europe, they had been to places where they could eat where they wanted. where they were not thrown out of public accommodations, and they were not going

she is president and director-counsel of the naacp legal defense fund.t is great to have you with us. explain what is going on in this baltimore courtroom. >> you know, rachel -- sorry, amy. you described beautifully the scope of the case. i want to zero in on some of the unique points. this case was brought by ron rosenstein, the deputy attorney sessions, right before he left being the u.s. attorney in baltimore this is the case he brought. he is the exact same line that you just said, that this is about cops who are also robbers. you brought the indictment thisst the six officers in unit. that is important to remember first of all that this was the republican u.s. attorney now working for sessions who brought this case. then all of the things you describe make this case really important. we're in the process of baltimore watching this process, this consent decree process that comes as the result of the pattern and practice investigation from the department of justice two years ago. decreeaunch this consent process, we are hearing the revelations of thi
