although not as a public defender, but as an attorney, naacp legal defense fund.ent time working there before teaching as senior counsel. and atlds, there is a strategic goal to help dismantle racial inequality. so in thurgood marshall's representation of people accused of crimes, it was to advance that goal and that interest. so at lds, he would pick and choose which claims to represent. i want to underscore the fact that judge jackson as a federal public defender could not and did not choose which clients to represent. she was responsible for representing whatever client in that jurisdiction would find her office and then find her as a member of the federal defenders. juan: alexis hoag, what were some of the moments that stuck out to you from yesterday's hearing? >> good morning, juan. several stuck out from yesterday's hearing. just in the exchange you played with senator cruz. i felt that sigh in my bones. what we're seeing is a supremely, in many ways, overqualified candidate for this role, having to navigate at times with a little bit of exasperation destruc

he was talked to by the naacp. truman was a real hero when it came to civil rights. really give him credit for it. but he was the first presidential candidate ever to campaign in harlem. truman said to his attorney general, you have to look into this. if necessary, if right, bring charges against this chief of police. that was just in the south in 1946. >> was this around the same time that truman integrated the armed forces? >> yeah, he wasn't the first to try. he was the first to make it a policy. isaac was blind for the rest of his life and never knew that truman had come in for him. that the trial took place and the judge in the trial was absolutely on his side. and actually set a bunch of precedence for civil rights law. he was alienated from his town. and he never knew about any of this. >> this judge had never particularly shown any interest in civil rights issues. but he was so horrified by this. needless to say, for that period, the jury acquitted the police chief, correct? >> of course, in minutes. he took a walk around town so they couldn't acquit him too

while working is the only woman lawyer, of the naacp legal defense fund.egee, of thurgood marshall, who went on to become the first black supreme court justice. she wrote the original complaint of brown versus board of education. she represented clients, like martin was there came to an, year after his arrest in birmingham, in 1963. and more than 1000 students who skipped class to protest segregation and burning him, under the threat of police violence. motley was the first black woman, to argue cases before the supreme court. she did it ten times, she won nine of those ten times. that is the story, and legal legacy, of supreme court nominee, ketanji brown jackson, invoked today, when she spoke to the senate judiciary committee, on day one of her confirmation hearings. >> during this hearing, i would hope that you can see how much i love our country. and, the constitution. the rights that make us free. i stand on the shoulders of so many, who have come before me, including judge constance baker motley, who is the first african american woman to be appointe

on saturday, the 53rd annual naacp image awards are taking place at the dolby theater.ch got me thinking, with it being black history month and all, about how far we've come. as far as bringing people together goes. this is something we did back in 2015, and i'll be honest, the results back then weren't great. so we did it again to see if we're headed in the right direction. we went out onto hollywood boulevard to ask pedestrians of the caucasian variety, "do you have a black friend?" this is how it works. we're going to see someone introduce themselves, based solely on the introduction we'll guess if that person has a black friend. does everyone understand? a year later i would continue my work on the issue and in the health care space at the end naacp. ben johnson and hillary mentored and inspired me. they encouraged me to keep up my work on the issue. today as a member of congress the issue of racial health disparities and the need for us to close the health care gap is among my top priorities. in that light during the 116th congress i was in my second term. that an opportunity arose to work with organizations like the association of minority health profession schools and others on a bill to help fund research on health disparities at schools of excellence. i remember approaching our friend, the late john lewis, about the bill. he encouraged me to fight. to get it across the finish line. and agreed to become an original co-sponsor. in this congress the 117th congress, i renamed the bill in honor of my friend, the late john lewis, h.r. 189 is now the john lewis national institute of minority health and health disparities research endowment revitalization act. i thank the gentleman from georgia, rep buddy carter, for being a co-lead
