today the head of the naacp stood with a group of former home first employees saying they believe racism played a part in them losing their jobs. robert honda has more. >> reporter: the group of former workers from the home first sunnyville homeless center flanked by the naacp held up signs of racism accusations outside the agency office. the workers who all identify as black say they worked at the shelter but were dismissed abruptly for, they claim, minor offenses without a hearing or a chance to plead their case. many acknowledge it was more of a pattern of treatment and a feeling rather than overt racist behavior. one worker said she was fired for yelling at a client. another said he didn't know why. >> the day i was terminated, a coworker, hispanic, shoved somebody on to their bed, and she was told to give her the deescalation tape. let her do that. why couldn't i do that? >> well, i was fired. i don't have any write-ups. and they told me i was fired because misconduct. you didn't identify misconduct. >> reporter: home first responded to our request for comment with a statement empha

please join us, and the deputy director of litigation for the naacp legal defense fund. i get to moderate this one. first let me say i know you've been living and breathingth the case and you both did a spectacular job before the supreme court in arguing the cases. they deserve a round of applause. they were am. great team. can you explain a little bit of the cases you represent and what your strategy was when you first got the case and what your thoughts are? >> this is a straightforward voting rights case that as many of you know is designed to protect the rights to elect candidates of their choice. in alabama you had states that for decades denied the representation in the congressional districts and had done so my clients including evan who is here today alleged intentionally so we went before the court that had the opportunity to hear the evidence and found overwhelmingly as later affirmedho black voters i know therehe are some black belt voters today that deserve representation in congress just like e everyone else in this country. >> that's the same idea. against

i'm standing in front of you today as the vice president of the san francisco branch of the naacp. dr. brown could not be here, but he requested chief and commissioners that i bring this to your attention. he believes that he has received some credible information that the black churches are about to be targeted for crimes to occur on sundays when we're having our morning worship service is. i am asking, chief for you to set aside a time to meet with dr. brown and some of the executive members of the naacp because as we do believe that this is very plausible and i think that it would be time for us to start thinking on sundays to have officers from the district stations at least visit during the course of their tour of duty during the daytime. um, each of these churches make themselves known that they're on duty so that the churches can feel that they're more protected and we don't need to be part of the statistics and we are faithful people. we believe in god and we support our police department. but at the same time, we really think at this point in time, we need to look at this

both seemed to be somewhat skeptical that the challengers here, the south carolina conference of the naacprden of what they call disentangling race from politics. politics was what the state legislature claimed was it's motive when it drew district one in south carolina. the chief justice said, for example, that there was no direct evidence that race was used. there were no bizarrely shaped lines around the district which is often a tip-off. he said that all it is, all they had, was circumstantial evidence, and if the court were to accept that, he said that that could be a huge change or expansion of the court's voting rights jurisprudence. that was really the strongest, comment that was made about the challengers evidence and their arguments today but there was pushback. justices kagan and justice sotomayor felt that the circumstantial evidence was very strong and that was all that was needed under the court's voting rights jurisprudence. they said that the lower court had found that, you know, what other reason could there be other than race when you see the legislature move 30,000 black

the naacp believed wholly in a legal strategy and really didn't degraded demonstrations as something that were that were dangerous, that would convince average white people that that black people were lawbreakers. thurgood marshall famously said that martin luther king was a boy on a man's errand and that he should be in court. so the role of lawyers and the role of the federal government were central. i mean, some of the most sensitive moments in the civil rights movement. when john doar showed up in selma at jean jackson's house, where dr. king was staying, he had identical pajamas with ralph abernathy. he was staying there. and john doar showed up and said, there is a federal injunction for you not to march after bloody sunday until judge johnson holds a hearing on what happened on the pettus bridge on bloody sunday and and people around dr. king said, you're talking to the wrong people. we didn't do anything. you need an injunction on the people that attacked us, not on us. and and john doar said, yes, this is a federal court order. i agree. if you want the federal government to

the parent teacher association called an emergency meeting where the naacp argued that that a new blackhigh school would solve nothing. one student told the associated press, we don't care if it takes two years. we planned to stay out until we get some concrete information about the new school. well, it took a lot more than two years and that was the lawsuit that sparked the the famous. what we now know is the brown versus board of education and the this lawsuit was sort of mixed in with other lawsuits and went to the supreme court and eventually overturned, you know, segregated public schools. and we now have integrated public schools as a result of what had happened here with these virginia students, you know, demanding a better school instead of staying here. so this strike that the students had went on for weeks a time when school officials threatened disciplinary action against students they considered to be playing hooky. the students may not have been getting a formal education during that time, but they were certainly getting a crash course in constitutional law by the time they
