there were people from the naacp, people from religious organizations. we saw the san francisco police chief there, also statate senatr scott wiener and other dignitaries were there as well. but there were also just individuals from the community who just wanted to honor doctor king and his legacy. and so together, more than 4000 people marched through the streets of san francisco and ended up at yerba buena gardens for a rally there and to listen to more speakers. so many people taking part today. marianne, i'm wondering, was there anything said today about this happening on the same day as inauguration day? absolutely. i talked to several people who were very upset that this day was selected as the presidential inauguration. they really felt that another day should have been selected. they felt strongly that today was about martin luther king jr. and they felt that having the inauguration today kind of diluted the celebration of doctor king. and i spoke with one woman who was 75 years old, and she said that she was on the celebration train as a form of

i mean, excuse me, of the naacp. so she's with the national league. he's with the acp. i'm their papers. but then i go into the organization final papers looking at the financial records of who gave money to these organizations. and that's where i really into the nitty gritty of this understanding how individual high net worth folks in new york city were giving money to the organ it to the urban league but also corporations like twc in general electric and and so forth they're giving to these these organizations funding what i call equality racial equality capitalism. right like they think that we want to be on the right side of history kind of like we saw in 2020. this is happening in the mid 20th century as well where these corporations like we want to be on the right side of the civil rights movement. so we want to give this money and delving in those financial records at the library of congress, but also at the rockefeller archive center, i could see this interesting matrix around generosity to black organizations and how black people push back against this out. fea

president and director council of the naacp legal defense fund.ses it has been two hours i did not get a chance to do that. so glad to talk to another civil rights attorney, can you talk about in this moment how important it is to maintain an independent judiciary with everything else that is going on with government in america? >> if is of the greatest importance. i am so glad that we have an opportunity to talk about this. happy new year to you, charles. as we approach the second trump administration we are reminded of the key role that the federal judiciary played in the first administration where trump tried to enact new laws and push congress to adopt legislation. he tried to legislate by through executive orders and most of the challenges to his actions that were excessive, that were overreach were, in fact, either overturned or somehow narrowed by the supreme court or lower federal courts. he only prevailed in about 22% of the nearly 250 challenges to some of his actions in his first term. that means that our courts, our state and federal c

belafonte told me a story about naacp and the story and martin luther king encourages them all to leavething about bobby kennedy that they can make a connection to expand civil rights and when bona said the one thing i got chills and i heard that in the title of the song. and i felt almost as if mr. b was up there orchestrating us like a marionette, putting us together to have this conversation. this song one good thing, if we can just find one good thing about someone that we otherwise may not want to communicate with it might be the spark that changes history. when bobby kennedy got involved in the way that was transformative in the civil rights movement that made it possible for me to sit here and be on this panel and made it possible for humanity to shine. that comment in and those words are shining example of the power of people who ushered forward. you talked about and antidote and we are wrapping up shortly but what would you add to the idea and what do you think would be an adding of an element? >> my role with them i thought aloud about this epidemic that we have globally and w

she was previously the president and director counsel for the naacp legal defense fund, and she joinsge's order was wholly unexpected today because of the egregiousness of the executive order. and yet, you never know these days your reaction to what the judge had to say and the fact that they have, in fact, halted it. >> good evening, chris. thanks so much for having me on. well, first and foremost, the people challenging trump's executive order are on the offensive, which means they get to pick the place where they filed the case. so this did not end up in judge kaczmarek's court or eileen cannon's court. instead, the plaintiffs obviously chose places where they believed they could get a fair hearing. and it is a no brainer. chris, of course, that an executive order cannot overturn a provision of our constitution. just forget about what the provision says. let's leave out birthright citizenship for the moment. there's just an imbalance here, right? that the constitution is our founding document and its provisions cannot be overturned by an executive order. so a president can know bet

you know, we also have a lawsuit with the aclu and also the naacp legal defense fund.one scenario, for example, is you have an undocumented mother who actually has children who are u.s. born citizens. she's actually expecting in the near future. and so she'll be in a situation where she's undocumented in the united states. she has u.s. born children. and her next child could potentially be undocumented as well. so we're here to basically fight for her civil rights and the civil rights of not just latinos, but every immigrant in this country as well. >> which obviously could lead to family separation, the kind of painful stuff that we saw during the first trump administration. and trump's borders are. meanwhile, who has talked about that sort of thing? just deporting families altogether says the handcuffs are coming off when it comes to the administration's immigration crackdown. there was all this anticipation as trump was coming into office, that we were going to see these mass deportations taking shape. are you seeing any signs of that? it doesn't sound as though tha

you know, i was talking to someone at naacp official. they were like, wait a minute. we're just, what, seven days? i said, no, eight days into this today. and they were. >> like, wow. >> what does this mean? it means that this president is true to what he said on the campaign trail, trying to fulfill things that he couldn't fulfill in the first term. this president is not a rights president. he is not a civil rights president. and that's one thing we know. we just have to see how it all plays out. but the question is how much hurt will be doled out? i mean, just looking at that, the issue of the loans and grants, you know, you also have research universities. that money is going to be suspended with. and what will he constitute as woke versus not? i mean, you have a lot of hbcus out here that get research money. they're looking to be an r1 research status institution. and will he say, oh, i don't want to do that anymore. and at one point, i remember when donald trump was president, the first time they offered to give more money to hbcus. and then steve bannon came bac
