i want to go to nadia bashir. so not a explain to us the significance of where you are in the context of the release of palestinian prisoners. >> well, look, can we're outside the ofer prison here in the occupied west bank, and this is expected to be essentially one of the focal points and release points for the release of palestinian prisoners and detainees. >> following that exchange. and of course, this is all dependent on those three israeli hostages being freed from captivity by hamas in gaza and returned to israeli territory. once that is confirmed, we are expecting to see palestinian prisoners and detainees released, much as we saw back during that four day truce back in november 2023, when once again, the ofer prison was one of those key focal points over the course of four days where we did see the transfer and release of palestinian prisoners and detainees. now, of course, over the next six weeks is what is set to mark the phase one of this three phase ceasefire agreement, if indeed it is upheld for thos

i want to go to nadia bashir now. the implications of this deal will be felt there where you are, where we're expecting palestinian prisoners to be released. take us through that. >> absolutely. this is a crucial part of the deal. and over the course of the negotiations that we have been seeing over more than a year now, the terms around the release of palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange for israeli hostages has continuously proven to be a sticking point, a sticking point with regards to the finer details, what we are expecting over the next six weeks in this first initial phase of the ceasefire agreement, if indeed it is upheld, is for around 33 hostages to be released and for hundreds of palestinian prisoners and detainees to be released from custody within israeli jails. now, today, on the first day, what we are expecting to see is once we have that confirmation of three israeli hostages being released from gaza and back in israeli territory, then we will begin to see the release of palestinian prisoner

thank you so much, nadia bashir bianna golodryga. we'll check back with you. thank you so much. all right, let's get more on this deal from another perspective with us now, david sanger, he is a cnn political and national security analyst. he's also author of the book new cold wars. great to see you, david. >> good to see you. >> so how hopeful are you that this phase one of the deal will happen and will go smoothly? >> i think it will happen. >> i doubt it will go smoothly because these things rarely do. and because there's so much time being in which this will unspool. about six weeks. um, the difficulty i think, that we'll run into is that while we know that there are 33, uh, israelis or israelis and americans who will be released in this first phase, clearly not all of them are alive. and i think that, you know, the joy of seeing the first 3 or 4 tomorrow will be dampened later on as we discover that others did not survive. and i think the second problem is that prime minister netanyahu is going to have to hold together his coalition through whatever bumps this gets to along

. >> well, cnn's nadia bashir is live in jerusalem for us. dia, this ceasefire is supposed to go into effect literally right now. what are you hearing about? what happens next? >> that's right. there has been some questions as to whether or not this will remain firmly in place, whether we will see the cease fire being enforced as planned, as you mentioned. it is expected to go into force right now, but there have been questions around the terms of the agreement, namely the release of the names of hostages to be released by hamas from captivity in this first initial phase, which is set to last for six weeks. now, we have heard reports that we have seen israeli forces withdrawing from parts of rafah in the south. so potentially a positive sign there. but we have heard from the israeli prime minister's office warning that that ceasefire cannot fully begin until they receive that full list of names of hostages to be released in this first phase. hamas officials have meanwhile said that they remain firmly committed to this ceasefire agreement. they

cnn's nadia bashir, she is outside ofer prison in the west bank. that's where we expect to see the 95 palestinian prisoners released sometime today. and, nadia, you made a good point last hour that many of those held in these prisons were not convicted of crimes that they're being held under administrative detention. do we know the makeup of this initial 95, in terms of what their legal status is, or any more details about them well, at this stage, jim, it is still somewhat up in the air. >> as you mentioned, we have that list of 95 that was issued last night by the israeli authorities or the night before. now we are getting a list from palestinian authorities and organizations. they believe 90 will be released this evening. of course, it remains to be seen once that release actually takes place. but as you mentioned, at least 30 on that initial list are believed to have been held under administrative detention, so no charges laid against them, no ongoing legal process or trials to speak of. as we understand it, at this stage, the 95 potentially set

cnn's nadia bashir joins us now live from london. good morning to you.o what are you hearing about the possibility of a ceasefire and hostage release deal? >> well, look, rosemary, we've been hearing, of course, over the last year efforts to push forward with the ceasefire negotiations. and then, of course, facing roadblocks along the way. we are once again hearing from u.s. officials and biden administration officials that there is a sense of cautious optimism that has also been expressed by israeli officials as well, that there has been some progress made in these talks taking place in doha between mediators and negotiators. but again, we have been hearing from the biden administration that no predictions can be made, that while there is some hope that we may see some sort of deal established before january 20th before trump is sworn into office, that there are still significant issues, discussions taking place that need to be hammered out. we know, of course, that there have been questions remaining still on the terms surrounding the philadelphia corr

nadia bashir bianna golodryga, thank you so much. all right. let's bring in now aaron david miller. he has been in the middle east and in these kinds of talks. as a former state department middle east negotiator, he's now a senior fellow at the carnegie endowment for international peace. always great to see you. so i mean, what are your thoughts now as this become a fragile deal? >> well, the good news is that this offers a some hope in a 15 months of of abject horrors in which israelis and palestinians have subjected one another to incredible trauma, loss and suffering. the problem, fredricka, is that you've got an indirect negotiation between two parties who fundamentally not only don't trust one another, but who are fundamentally committed to one another's destruction. so it is not surprising that you have a degree of brinkmanship. um, if hamas hamas is obligated to turn over the names of three living females, not military. um um soldiers, not soldiers, but civilians. and that hasn't been done. i can't imagine that won't be done. uh, in enough time to to allow this deal to procee

our nadia bashir has more on that situation on the ground. >> there is a lot of pressure on this deal, getting to getting to work as soon as possible. a lot of questions still up in the air. and of course, in terms of the framework, in terms of what we're expecting to see today, the hope is that three israeli hostages will be released from captivity in gaza by hamas following their release and their return into israeli territory. that's when we can expect to see the release of some palestinian prisoners and detainees. now, over the course of the next six weeks, we're expecting to see hundreds of palestinian prisoners and detainees released. and, of course, 33 israeli hostages released. today. we are expecting around 95 palestinian prisoners and detainees to be released. that includes 70 women, 25 men, among them ten minors under the age of 18. important to underscore at least 30 of them have been held under administrative detention, a deeply controversial practice which essentially means there are no charges laid against them and no ongoing legal process. but of course, this is all de
