. >> let's bring in cnn's nadia romero now. nadia, why this shift?the cdc is basically saying, look, we have gone so much in a different direction than where we started at the beginning of this pandemic. we have improved in so many ways that we no longer need these strict guidelines that we've had since march and april of 2020. and if you look at that list, you can see that social distancing is on the list of things that the cdc wants to loosen those restrictions. and that's something that we've been doing since very early on, staying six feet away, trying to limit the spread. now the cdc is saying, you know what, we have other mitigation efforts, most notably the vaccine, we know it is highly effective and available to those who want it. when you look at the things the cdc wants the nation to move away from, they've also addressed american classrooms, kids now heading back to school and so many in school, changing the guidelines for school, saying those students no longer need to test to stay in classrooms. and also classrooms don't need to be isola

let's bring in cnn's nadia romero to talk about this. , the state is defending its decision to go through with the execution. >> reporter: yeah, borress, amara, this doesn't come without a lot of controversy. whenever you bring up the death penalty or capital punishment but the state here saying they're looking at the violent nature of his crimes and also the will of the oklahoma voters. let's start with james codington, convicted for a killing back in 1997 for killing what he considered to be his friend, a man named albert hale, during a moment he was trying to get more drugs. he was a drug addict and he wanted that money from albert. h hale did not give him that money so police say codington beat him with a hammer and that's why he was sentenced to death. but there's been a long history in oklahoma of these botched executions. four inmates really have come to mind and that critics say you can look at those botched executions as why they shouldn't happen. and in many of those cases the state of oklahoma used unauthorized drugs. one man s

cnn's nadia romero joins us now.se inmates are innocent or have a type of mental fitness that should disqualify them being put to death. >> those are some of the arguments that we've heard from people who have been against the capital punishment or death penalty for a long time noting the racial biases in arresting and sentencing, noting the difficult backgrounds that people may come from or maybe they don't have the mental capacity to have the death penalty. so all of those questions really surround this particular case as well. i want to talk about james codington, the man who was executed on thursday. his lawyers say he had a drug addiction and that led him to his violent crime of killing his friend by usings a hammer to steal money to pay for his drug habit. but now his lawyers say that he is remorseful. as he was remorseful and that he should not have been executed. they asked for clemency. and the state board granted that clemency. approved it on a 3-2 vote. but as you just heard fred say, the governor denied c

cnn's nadia romero is live for us there in jackson. meteorologist britley writs is tracking it from the cnn weather center. nadia, what are you seeing? >> already seeing flooding in the northeast side of jackson, mississippi. i'm standing in front of someone's lawn that's flooded out. i'll make my way to the street. this is the lowest point as the floodwaters continue to rise. as you make your way down the street, you'll hit a speed bump and slowly but surely it gets keeper as you make your way around the corner. i spoke with people who live in this neighborhood and they said, yeah, we flooded out in 2020. the third highest crest for the pearl river happened back in 2020. they say this time around they're getting more notice and be prepared. you can see some of the neighborhoods behind me have sandbags already. they've been without power for at least the past hour, shutting off power for this area already. there are three things the mayor of jackson wants his residents to know. the first is about power, entergy will likely shut off powe

. >> nadia romero thank you so much. >>> our meteorologist is tracking latest from the cnn weather center. britley, what are you seeing from your view? >> the barnett reservoir crest happened earlier this morning. it's a good thing when it comes down to the pearl river. current levels 35.19 feet. forecast to crest at 35 1/2 feet just below major flood stage coming into tomorrow morning. rain chances have finally started to come down a bit so the heavy, steady rain less likely but we're still dealing with flood warnings along the lower mississippi valley until further notice, all the way down into parts of louisiana, where near record levels are expected. so there's that scattered shower and storm chance along the gulf coast trying to pump back into the lower mississippi valley within the next two days with that area of low pressure hanging nearby. a lot of rain, no, not much compared to what we picked up over the past few days. rainfall totals between one and two inches, with isolated higher amounts possible here, just within the next 48 to 72 hours. now, here's the deal. we're coming int

cnn's nadia romero is following the changes for us.ove. >> the cdc said we have come such a long way since the start of this pandemic in march and april of 2020 and they're getting rid of social distancing. it has been with us for so long now. that is a big one that is now off the list. so as you look at the list of no social distancing, no more screening and in most circumstances and no more quarantine after exposure. that is one that kept a lot of people out of church and work and schools. those are being removed from those strict covid-19 guidelines in the works toer about two years or so now. and that is impacting what we're seeing in the schools. many of the nation's kids are back in the classrooms and the new cdc guidelines are loosening there as well saying there no longer needs to be an isolation of individual classrooms which is huge for a lot of educators who said they wanted their kids to be able to mingle with other classrooms as part of their social development. it was also important for resources. we know that many of our
