cbs' nancy chen reports. >> the tumors here -- a new study finds over 4% of all cancer cases in 2020 were caused by capitol consumption. while most cancers linked to alcohol use were in people who have more than two drinks a day, more than 100,000 cases worldwide were in people who averaged less than that. >> reporter: even two drinks a day can lead to this risk. >> absolutely. alcohol is an irritant. it irritates the lining of our mouth, our throat, of our stomach and as our body trials to heal, sometimes it heals in abnormal ways that can lead to the very beginnings of cancer. >> reporter: three-quarters of alcohol-related cancers were diagnosed to men, mostly liver and esophageal, but when they occurred in women, breast cancer was most common. the new findings come as alcohol consumption spiked during the pandemic. almost two-thirds of americans surveyed last year said their drinking has increased. sarah church is a psychologist who runs an addiction center in new york. >> o'donnell: for people using alcohol to keep in one way or the other, once the pandemic hit, the drinking incr

here's cbs' nancy chen. >> reporter: 12-year-old kerry koranteng has been collecting shoes, but not forlf. some of the kids that you're helping are your age. >> yes. >> reporter: a trip to see family in ghana inspired her. >> when i visit my grand-auntie in the villages, you could see every child, no shoes on. and i realized this is very dangerous. >> reporter: she was just eight that first time. she began sending shoes to them local nonprofit.the support of a in this village, the generosity is cause for a celebration. >> this is special. nobody give me shoes like that before. >> reporter: koranteng raises money for the hefty shipping fees and flies with stuffed suitcases during school breaks. your living room just turned into a shoe store. >> yes, so much boxes backed up. >> reporter: she sent nearly 1,000 pairs from chicago to ghana. the shoes are handed out to children, like this nine-year- old, who used to walk to school barefoot. >> i can show you the shoes. >> reporter: yes, can you show me the shoes! that's great! >> reporter: koranteng's hope to motivate others if the shoe fits.
