i want to turn out to nancy cook of the national journal.he is here to give us -- give us all the latest. her latest story -- and the cook, thank you for joining us. guest: thank you for having me. we are at this late hour. all of these tax hikes and spending cuts are slated to take defect in the new year. congress and the white house had spent seven weeks of bickering over all these different elements of the this clip. as you know, there are many elements. many tax provisions, a lot of spending cuts, and at this point, any deal that is reached will not deal with a lot of these things. it is going to potentially make some tax cuts for below $250,000. it will potentially patch the alternative minimum tax. it will not deal with the payroll tax holiday. the most likely will not deal with the sequester. it may earn -- it may or not deal with tax breaks for businesses. for all these arguments and ongoing things about these tax and spending issues, in the end, we will get any compromise, if at all. host: we hear about the flurry of proposals that

harwood cnbc's chief washington correspondent and political writer for the "new york times" and nancy cookeconomics correspondent for the national journal. okay. wow. a big night last night. john, let's talk about the impact on the economy. this is not the debt ceiling. this is not sort of our credit rating will immediately drop. but wall street seemed to have thought for a while that, okay. they're going to talk and talk. >> so did i. >> and i did too. a deal is in the offing. now that a deal may not be in the offing, what's the impact on the economy, broadly? >> well, we saw the market futures go down last night. we expect a down day in the markets today. the decline hasn't been quite as steep as some people expected. but you do see a potential hit for confidence if it's not worked out. it's not set that we're not going to -- that we're going over the cliff. in fact, i think there is a significant chance that either a medium deal or a very minimalist deal just kicking the can down the road for a couple months passes. but i do think that the more times we have these near death experiences

let me bring in economics correspondent nancy cook and reuters political reporter.ou both for being here. we talk about what's going to get done, what we hope is going to get done. several things are not going to get done. tackle the debt ceiling, the sequester, payroll tax holiday and tax breaks for businesses. where does this leave us if they are not being discussed at this point? >> at this point, the best thing we could hope for is a small, bare bones deal that extends the middle class tax cuts, patches the amt. there are a bunch of things congress and the white house will have to deal with in the new year like the sequester. they are things that will get wrapped up in the other budget that we have coming up, particularly around raising the debt ceiling. >> we haven't talked about this enough. you hear it out there. the payroll tax holiday. we are talking about keeping tax rates, taxes going up for everybody, 98% of mile an hoame. your taxes are going to go up because the payroll tax holiday is not being dealt with. the payroll tax holiday is going to cost every

nancy loo has the latest from dolton. >> this operation was apparently pretty sophisticated. according to the cook county sheriff they have an uptick in dogfighting cases and the bust here last night was evidence of that. a sign on the door of this apparently abandoned industrial building warrants to be aware of dog. a tip to police made them aware of the situation involving many dogs. the officers arrived just of the 7:00 last night to find an active dog fight operation complete with a makeshift ring and up to 10 pitbull. there was also signs of improper care and abuse. the people inside scattered running through the woods near the building on the 1500 block of 142nd. some even ran across the bishop for to get away. inside the police and county sheriff's office were able to arrest eight people including six who were hiding in the rafters. it is not clear how many dog bites were held here but the surrounding area is littered with items like a dog food bag and packaging for to toys. all of the dogs were rescued here are now in the care of this out suburban humane society which is asking for donatio

that nancy lanza left tuesday morning and spent almost three full days at a resort in new hampshire. now, it's unclear whether she left her son home alone. she did that occasionally. she would cookim by himself. it's not clear whether he was alone during this time. but we do know that nancy lanza was not there in the days before the shooting. she returned thursday evening. friday, friday her son shot her four times in the head. now, we want to kind of show you what is going on behind me here at this house. this has been an active scene all day long. the major crime scene squad has been on site. they've had more than eight investigators throughout the course of the day. they brought the mobile crime lab, which is also up there, just to the left of the house. but you can see the lights on in the second floor and also on the main floor there, of the primary residence. we do know that they're looking through all sorts of things. they're looking through papers, they're looking through documents, they're looking through file cabinet. they're trying to get any evidence that they can. and the reason that the crime scene lab is there, is that they're able to process information on scene.
