the cbs's nancy cordes joins us now from the white house. nancy, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, norah. we just heard from the commander in chief. he said despite these deaths, his military leaders want to continue with this risky evacuation mission for a few more days, and he does too. >> a tough day. >> reporter: a somber president biden called the fallen troops heroes, who died in the service of an historic airlift. >> we have some sense, like many of you do, what the families of these brave heroes are feeling today. we get this feeling like you are being sucked into a black hole in the middle of your chest, and there is no way out. >> reporter: the president said he has ordered the pentagon to draw up plans to strike back at the isis offshoot that claimed responsibility for the bombing. >> to those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes america harm, know this: we will not forgive. we will not forget. we will hunt you down, and make you pay. >> reporter: the attack came just five days before the troops were set

cbs' nancy cordes is monitoring the situation at the white house, eight days before that deadline for the u.s. withdrawal. >> reporter: despite the chaos outside kabul's airport, evacuations are picking up speed. u.s. military cargo jets evacuated more than 10,000 people, some of them americans but most of them afghans in the past 24 hours. just outside the airport at least 7 afghans were crushed to death this weekend and a firefight claimed the life of an afghan soldier. the pentagon confirmed today that u.s. troops made a second foray off airport grounds to rescue trained americans. >> commanders on the ground have the authority to conduct local missions as they deem appropriate to the need. and we charge them with assessing the risk. >> reporter: u.s. troops are racing to get as many people out as possible before august 31st. the deadline president biden set months ago for a full u.s. withdrawal. today a taliban spokesman warned the u.s. military not to stay a day longer. >> this is something you can say is a red line, it there be the relation, that will create mistrust between us.

cbs' nancy cordes is at the white house. and, nancy, boy, this comes after a lot of pressure from members of his own party, right? >> reporter: it sure did, norah. the c.d.c. has just released that new ban and it is a big turnaround for an administration that was arguing as recently as yesterday that its hands were tied and that it couldn't legal he extend the ban on evictions. well, apparently, the c.d.c. has found a way because now we have this new ban that will last 60 days, until october 3. it's going to cover 80% of counties, home to 90% of the u.s. population. and it's targeted, we're told, to areas that have experienced high levels will of covid infection. but the high court ruled against the last ban, so recently, i suprco that imay, g to pass and it's worth the effort. >> reporter: his argument is that even if this move is ultimately blocked by the courts, at the very least it will buy states time to distribute tens of billions of dollars in federal rent forgiveness to help make renters whole and keep them from being

cbs's nancy cordes will lead us off tnt from the white house. good evening, nancy. >> reporter: good evening, norah. tonight we are learning that the military has been conducting more emergency missions to rescue both american citizens and c.i.a. personnel outside the kabul airport, using choppers to do so. today, the secretary of state saying that of the 6,000 or so americans who were in afghanistan at the start of the month, about three quarters of them have now been evacuated. >> this is very high risk. >> reporter: secretary blinken said the state department has contacted about 500 americans in the past 24 hours, giving them instructions on how to get to safety. but that leaves about a thousand americans whose wishes and status are unclear. >> we're aggressively reaching out to them, multiple times a day through multiple channels of communication-- phone, email, text messaging-- to determine whether they still want to leave, and to get the most up to date information and instruction to them for how to do so. >> reporter: more than 70,000 afgh
