coming together and if not, can the president take action on his own during a lame duck session, for example? >> well, nancy pelosi seems to think, as she was mixed up with the 11th and 14th amendment in raising the debt ceiling, the congress and the president needs to work together, but as for numbers, the congressional budget office came out with a recent report saying if you do what republicans want to do, it will only have the economy grow 1.5%, if you do what obama wants us to do, 1.25%, so, jamie, for it to actually come to a compromise, it just can't be a discussion about tax increases or not. you're going to have to cut spending and have entitlement reform. so, i do believe that they're going to go to a compromise, either speaking of the fiscal cliff and hurting seniors. if we go over the fiscal cliff, it will hurt all americans. >> jamie: i understand, thank you both so much for weighing in. great discussion, doug schoen and angela mcglowan, angela the optimist. joining us to talk, the lame- duck congress and the fiscal cliff is nancy cliff, from the national journalthank you for being here. what is at stake during a lame- duck session? guest: the biggest hunk of things at stake are tax changes. those are individual tax rates, tax breaks for businesses at stake. the alternative minimum tax that could hit more middle income families. and then these mandated spending cuts that the budget control act put in place, those are called the sequester. those would have the federal government spending across a bunch of different things like health care spending, biomedical research, education. and the other half of that would hit defense. host: the rest of the world is waking up to it. the front page of usa today says -- we are facing a real cliff hanger. take a store with the fiscal cliff is. guest: it is all these different things, a lot of consumers face. one thing i thought was right about that usa today story is that it lays out how it will affect consumers. and about 90% of all americans could face potential increases in their tax bills. that could be

house minority leader nancy pelosi shortly will be holding a news conference with reporters and she will likely discuss not only the democratic agenda for the lame duck and the 11 th but her future plans. on tuesday her office confirmed regardless whether she cedes her leadership post she will remain in the congress for two years. associated press and other news organizations reporting that nancy pelosi told her party caucus she will remain as minority leader in the new session of congress. we'll find out shortly once the news conference gets underway. this morning we heard from the newly-elected senator-elect angus king of maine. he made his decision. he is an independent and has decided to caucus with the democrats. the associated press saying that will add to the party's voting edge. his decision ends months of speculation which party he would align with. with that alignment it gives the democrats a 55-45 edge. while we wait to hear from leader pelosi and other democrats we'll show you angus king, senator-elect from maine a short while ago. >> good morning. all set? today i'm announcing my decision as to which party, if any i will soothe with
