these qualities made nancy reagan a extraordinary first lady. she brought her work and sense of style -- more --warmth and sense of staff. while her husband was busy at work, and strengthening our defenses in promoting freedom, this is reagan was a crucial competent and an essential competent -- partner. she exhibited devotion to her husband and the 40th president of the united states. it is no exaggeration to say that there may not have been a successful ronald reagan without her. the president self -- itself -- himself said he could not imagine life without her. she was an advocate for foster parents. at times when elected officials had not only working relationships with two people across the hour, temporary real praised her efforts -- saying the white house has never looked better. she cared if we -- deeply about the health of americans. her best known initiative was leading against drug abuse. while still serving as first lady, she received a threatening -- diagnosis. rest cancer. -- breast cancer. she inspired generations of women in their

ronald reagan is denying that so it is it becomes nancy reagan's job. it's important to her in doing that. she wants to make sure that it has the resources that it needs and she also finds other ways to make sure history remembers ronald reagan in a way that is true to ronald reagan. she does something that i found fascinating which is while on the one hand, conservatives ronald reagan becomes this icon. but she also knows that there is still this perception among the liberal scholars and historians that he was just an actor reading lines other people wrote for him. his value and belief in his own handwriting so you see he begins to publish his diaries, something very few presidents have ever done in keeping real-time diaries so people can see in his own hand at the crucial juncture. he publishes his letters and all the speeches that he was writing as he was getting ready to run for president and you can see in his own hand that these were his thoughts and values she didn't want it to be a monument just to the past but also to point to the future which i

one thing i don't know if it's been talked about today is is nancy reagan's tremendous power persuasion. and one story comes to mind was it was not me directly, but it showed the her persuasive power. this was when john roberts who worked in the reagan white house was made chief justice with supreme court, nancy regulus still alive and she said we should her part of the plan with the library was to have the you know, the people who were in the key decision makers influential people come and speak at the library. and she said well, we shouldn't it's invite john rod roberts and so we did an inquiry to the court and they said well, you know, he's not accepting invitations yet. okay, and then about a week later she got an invitation to come to the white house. i think it was the queen who was here for state visit that the bushes invited and they invited nancy reagan to come for the state visit and seated at the table with the president. the next to nancy reagan was john roberts. and when john roberts was at library he began the story by saying as they sat down nancy reagan immediately exten

what kinds of issues would i take on what i be more like laura bush or hillary clinton or nancy reagan? and the truth is those same questions would have been posed to any candidate spouse. that's just the way the process works. but as potentially the first african-american first lady i was also the focus of another set of questions and speculations conversations sometimes rooted in the fears and misperceptions of others. was i too loud or too angry or too emasculating? or was i too soft? too much of a mom not enough of a career woman. then there was the first time i was on a magazine cover. it was a cartoon drawing of me with a huge afro and a machine gun. now yeah, i wish satire. but if i'm really being honest. that knocked me back a bit. it made me wonder well. just how are people seeing me. or you might remember the onstage celebratory fist bump between me and my husband after a primary when that was referred to as a terrorist fist jab. and over the years folks have used plenty of interesting words to describe me. one said i exited exhibited a little bit of uppityism. another noted

nancy reagan used astrology, and you could understand after president reagan was nearly killed by an assassin who was just released in full, she consulted an astrologer even about her husband's schedule. she had every right to do it. i don't happen to believe in astrology. other people do. i don't want to get into an argument about astrology, so no, we don't use astrology. we have had a pretty consistent record of picking elections well , with the exception of donald trump in 2016, for which we had loads of company. you may have noticed that. every prognostication agency i am the mill you're with thought hillary clinton was going to defeat donald trump. so with the exception of 2016, we have had a very high percentage. we keep all of that on our website. the crystal ball, center for politics, so that people can see where we were right, where we were wrong. it is part of the record. and by the way, it doesn't matter. prognostication is interesting, and we use it because this center is dedicated to civic education. we use it as a hook to get people interested and involved in politics.
