nancy ward who is our region nine fema director. we have cal e.m.a. here, mike dayton and his staff. chief greg sir and they brought their whole command staff. we have many nert scroll teers. nert was a group that came about from 9/11 i mean -- shows where my mind is. from loma prieta. we have a lot prepared for you and i want to welcome our two chiefs up. joanne, would you like to start with a few words and then chief greg sir after that? >> thank you, anne, for the kind introductions. it was amazing 22 years ago this city in the bay area region experienced the loma prieta earthquake. i was not yet in the fire department. it was about five months before i joined and like anne alluded to, if anyone lived here, they remember where they were. >> i was at a high school when it happened and all of us remember the frightening moments and the aftermath of loma prieta. and it's always fitting when we celebrate an anniversary to take a minute not only to commemorate that but to next on the importance of how the community needs to step up an

the welcoming introduce nancy ward, theç fema regional administrator for region nine.[applause] çç>> good morning. welcome. it is fabulous to have such a great size of the crowd on this very important topic of recovery. we have talked a lot of with the years -- over the years about the response. we got throughç the framework transition. i understand it was painful for everyone. now we need to focus on recovery. ççthere is no better place tok about that than the building we're sitting in today. poetic and ironic that we areç in san francisco city hall. the original building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fires. two decades ago, it was completely rebuilt because of the loma prieçto earthquake. our fingers are crossed that there will not be any earthshaking today. our deputy administrator will talk about the shape specifically. i wanted to take a moment to thank our host, edwin lee, the mayor of san francisco. he has championed an equal focus on response and recovery. today he is our host in this majestic civil service building, probably the most majestic

nancy ward over here was my colleague in the state for a lot of years and has now been -- with fema for 10 years? and i got to tell you, nancy really did a lot to push forward funding for planning in the bay area when they were overlooking us and looking at the other areas in the country. because of her efforts we have now had a pretty steady stream of funding coming through. also want to acknowledge mike deyton in the state for this as well. but we've done i think some of the best regional planning in the country here in the bay area. and i have to -- in the interest of full disclosure, i am an employer of u.r.f. we have do a lot of those plans. with that said i think we've done an incredible amount of work here in the bay area to address the a lot of deficiencies and issues that became apparent after loma prieta. also i think it's important to acknowledge a lot of our community partners and having worked down here in the bay area for a couple years as part of the bay initiative. we have emily white and greg smith here from red cross who are part of our advisory team. alyssa domo who c
