naomi ruchim is in new york. where do vaccination numbers stand right now? >> reporter: you'll remember when the vaccine first came out, there was a lot of frustration the process was going going quite slow. people wanted the shot and couldn't get it. weeks and months later, as of this morning, one in four adults in this country is fully vaccinated. when you look at that group 65 and older, more than half are fully vaccinated. still though, there is concern over these new variants. president biden is speeding up the timeline for covid-19 vaccine eligibility. >> by no later than april 19th in every part of this country, every adult over the age of 18, 18 or older, will be eligible to be vaccinated. >> reporter: about one-third of all americans, 108 million people, have already received at least one dose. the white house had previously announced that all adults would be eligible by may 1st. >> the virus is spreading because we have too many people seeing the end in sight think we're at the finish line already. >> reporter: the change comes as coronavirus varia

naomi ruchim is in new york. experts are also putting out a warning for kids. tell us about it. >> reporter: well, that's because that new variant, the one from the uk, is now the most prevalent in the u.s., and it seems to be more contagious for young people. also younger people are getting sicker. of all the new cases in the u.s. last week, children accounted for roughly one in five. about three million vaccines are now being administered in the u.s. every day. more than a third of the population has received at least one dose, and nearly 20% are considered fully vaccinated. yet the number of infections has been rising, with more than 64,000 new cases reported daily. in the upper midwest, hospitalizations are up 42% in the past week. >> the last time we have seen numbers like that was 12 months ago in april of 2020. >> reporter: according to the cdc, most common source of new infections is the b.1.1.7. strain that was first identified in the uk in december. experts say children may be more susceptible to the variant. >> prior to this time, young kids, particu
