tara moriarty is live until downtown napa now checking on how napa is recovering, tara a half year later. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. many buildings are still shut down like this post office here. you can see people have posted all of these hearts here along the fence saying please save our post office. please reopen we miss you. the official estimate for damage was $442 million. a risk management company says that number is really at least twice that much. downtown the safeway that was reslated to open in december but so far no, ma'am word. many small business owners say disaster relief was not enough to cover the losses. but over all city leaders say they have seen patrol guess. we have spoke to one business owner who's inventory inside his store was destroyed but she managed to get back on her feet. >> it was terrifying. i lost about $38,000. i finished our fourth quarter with growth. >> reporter: she credits locals shopping since the quake supporting their community. the city has also lost some tax money because some hotels, restaurants, and other businesses were badly d

. >>> it's been six months since the napa 6.0 quake. on the left you can see the damage left behind. on the right side of your screen, some of the progress. while the napa region continues to bounce back a lot of repairs still need to be made. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is in downtown napa. jodi? >> reporter: the road ahead is a long one. we're standing on third street and -- third and main street in downtown napa. as you can see, there is still a number of businesses that have a lot of work that need to be done before they can reopen. construction crews have been hard at work at the napa county administration building where six months ago today the south napa quake caused ceilings and walls to collapse making the board of supervisors chambers and other county spaces unsafe. >> actually we're still feeling the impact of the earthquake. >> reporter: while most of napa is back in business including restaurants and wineries some areas of downtown are still off limits. >> the downtown safe way hasn't come back and those are things that w

live from napa i'm tara moriarty. back to you. >>> it's also been six months since that napa teenager was injured when the chimney at his house collapsed on to him. one of his most serious injuries was a broken pelvis. remember he got to meet the warriors which was pretty nice. doctors expected it to take six months before he could walk again. he surprised them though and is already practicing soccer. he says surviving the quake has changed him and he now appreciates every day he's alive. >>> cal train is back on its regular schedule after two separate deaths along its tracks. a man inside a cal train tunnel was hit and killed by a train that was out of service. earlier in the day a woman in her car who cal train says likely got stuck on the tracks was hit and killed in menlo park. that happened a the the ravens wood avenue crossing. the impact sent her car 40 feet through the intersection. the 40-year-old woman was taken to stanford hospital where he later died. cal train tells us she likely got stuck on the tracks b

it was the moose head. >> reporter: the napa moose head missing since new year's day. it was a deformity that looked remarkably like a moose growing for decades out the side of this enormous eucalyptus tree. over and over generations of people playfully decorated it. when the giants won the world series, local high school colors, and after 9/11, in a patriotic theme. then it came back mysteriously after it disappeared, landing on the mayor's driveway. >> police officers and the tech guys came, they put on gloves and they said if there's paint on it they're going to be able to get fingerprints. >> reporter: sitting in the napa police crime lab with a tag typically found on the toe of other kind of victims, the moose will be held as evidence. it wasn't easy getting it here. >> takes two people to lift because this thing weighs a couple hundred pounds and we had to put it in the back of a pickup truck. >> reporter: police say catching the chain saw scoundrels will be difficult. restaurant owner joe has plans to celebrate the moose head's return once released from custody.

napa fairfield. so give yourself a little extra time and do be careful if you are headed out early this morning. the sun coming up right after 7:00. patchy valley fog. gradual cooling into tomorrow and tuesday. tomorrow is the holiday so still holding on to some warm temperatures. seems like everybody was at the beach yesterday with the light offshore flow. the winds remain light again today. that will allow for temperatures to soar into the 70s. we are looking at some typical winter time systems offshore. but they just can't get through this ridge. so it will remain up and over the ridge, well into alaska. terms of high pressure for san jose, we are looking at 77 today. average high 64. lock for just a few degrees of cooling tomorrow. and then a few weak systems out over the ridge will flatten in allowing for temperatures to come down. still these numbers are 9 or 10 degrees above average. in terms of our rainfall, this outlook goes to about mid-february the next ten days. you will notice trying to

>> reporter: good evening from first street in napa. that quake was 10 to 20 seconds. it shook this small city to the core. six months ago this street these businesses closed. there were all kinds of gates up and scaffolding. it looks a lot better now. 3:20 tomorrow morning, that is the official six-month anniversary. time may fly when you do not live in a recovering earthquake zone. and when you do? does it feel like six months? >> no. >> reporter: what's it feel like? >> two months. >> reporter: take a look. most of the scaffolding around napa has disappeared six months later. most but not all of it. the old courthouse remains a shadow of its former self as does the center building which dates from 1903. and the local newspaper office? >> this was the newsroom. the sports department was here. >> reporter: it's a newsman's worst nightmare becoming part of the story, at the napa valley register. >> it gives us greater empaternityempathy for folks we write for, because their trauma is in part our trauma. >> reporter: so kevin sits in his desk at the new newsroom, outsid
