ultimately i stumbled across the idea of having -- not really a nar iter but a guyed you meet at the beginning of the book and travel through with him. i see someone who likes benjamin brown frefrm. he is a good guy. he is from new hampshire. minor clerk in the house most of his career. moved in congressional circles for decades. and he ended -- i sing hosanna to benjamin brown gefrmg are french for me because he made the book for me. he kept a diary, 11 volume diary filled with reflection z and thoughts and feelings about congress and a lot of details about fights. because his job was to sit in the front of the house and watch what was happening and record it sometimes. there is a letter he writes to his brother and says you won't believe what i saw today. and my job is to record it. so he is an amazing source of evidence. but more than that he undergoes a remarkable transition over the years covered by the book. he comes to washington in 1833. and at the time he would have been called and was called a dough faced democrat meaning a northern democrat willing to do anything to apiece
